PeacemakersMat 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

I have been watching for much of last night and early this morning the protests and unrest in Baltimore over Freddie Gray’s death. This morning they were interviewing Rev. Jamal Bryant, who before the event turned violent, had worked with gangs like the “Bloods” and the “Crips” to come together to form an anti-violence pact. The gangs had a 150 minute meeting held by Rev. Bryant to come to agreement on their con-duct and to set aside their hate between the gangs. Before the violence they stood forming a wall trying to get the other protestors to be responsible. Unfortunately it still turned violent, but blessed are the Peacemakers.

What we need are more Peacemakers! A Peacemaker is defined as “a person, group, or nation that tries to make peace, especially by reconciling parties who disagree, quarrel, or fight.” We need more Peacemakers!

We need people: Religious leaders, News Reporters, Gang Members, Policemen, City Managers, School Teachers, etc… that work to bring peace to their neighborhoods.

But we don’t just need Peacemakers in Baltimore or Ferguson; we need them in every town; every church; every home!

Peacemakers...work to stop gossip that destroys lives! Peacemakers...try to stop friendships that are self-destructing over a quarrel! Peacemakers...work to quell rumblings in the pews when the church doesn’t always agree about everything! Peacemakers...get involved when they see Countries cordial relationships dissolving! Peacemakers...work to bring peace to their neighborhoods!

It’s not easy to be a Peacemaker, but “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

The Soil of Gratitude“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.” A.A. Milne – author of Winnie the Pooh

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and over-flowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6,7

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15

My mother taught me a great many things. Perhaps one of the greatest lessons that she taught me was that being grateful and appreciating what we have is a very important virtue for life. That lesson was not lost on me. I discovered later in life that the reason it wasn’t lost on me was that it wasn’t my mothers teaching, but Christ’s.

Why is gratitude so important? Gratitude is important because it helps us as disciples of Christ in two ways: in it’s power, and in it’s value.

Gratitude builds into us a receptivity to receive the knowledge of Christ so that we can live as Christ’s disciples in a thank-less world. What I have learned in life is that gratitude’s power is important in the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ because it is the soil in which contentment and peace grow. We are prepared to interact with the world on Christ’s behalf because we are grateful and satisfied with all that Jesus has done on our behalf. We are content in whatever state of life that we find ourselves because our hearts are full of thanks. We are also prepared to live in peace with other disciples, not desiring to be them or to have what they have, but instead, we are content with who God has made us to be.

The value of gratitude in our walk with Christ is best understood in its antithesis. If you and I don’t cultivate gratitude in our lives then we run the risk of becoming entitled and unappreciative of what God has provided for us. Gratitude of course is a close sibling of thanks or thankfulness. This idea of being thankful was very close to the heart of God. In the entirety of Scripture, some combination of the word is found 169 times in 162 scriptures in the New American Standard translation of the Bible. The Apostle Paul speaks about it many times in his letters. We see it present in the letter to the Colossians as Paul uses some combination of the word “thanks” five times, and the word “gratitude” once.

Here are some biblical reasons to be thankful, as taken from Bible.org in it’s devotional commentary on Colossians:http://bible.org/seriespage/6-reasons-tahnksgiving-col-112b-14

1. Because it honors God. When we are thankful, we recognize that God exists, and we are acting on the reality of His life as the very source and means of ours. True thankfulness recognizes our total dependence on God and stems from realizing that everything going on in our lives and all we have is the product of God's sovereign control, infinite wisdom, purposes, grace, and activity (2 Cor. 4:15).

2. Because it is commanded in Scripture. First, the Psalms are filled with the call to give thanks. An example is Ps. 100:4 which says, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name." Then Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "In everything keep on giving thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (“My translation”) In Colossians, he twice gives the command to be thankful (3:15, 17).

3. Because of the dangerous consequences of thanklessness: thanklessness is dangerous to self and others. It dishonors God and leads to proud humanism or dependence on man rather than God (cf. Rom. 1:21). In addition, it leads to bitterness, complaining, and a joyless life (Heb. 12:15). Since thankfulness is a response to the grace of God, its opposite, bitterness with its companions, complaining and grumbling, is the product of an unthankful heart. Bitterness prevents us from properly responding to God in faith to His person, infinite wisdom, grace and purposes. Thanklessness promotes pettiness and occupation with self, people, and problems. That in turn creates depression and feelings of hopelessness because we become focused on our problems rather than on the Lord.

May you and I be truly grateful people, full of thanks, and eager to show gratitude for all that God has done for us to the world. May we also share that gratitude with those of the household of the faith, so that we may dwell together in peace. Amen Adam Thornton ~ Associate Pastor

Preparing His Way: God’s Plan – Our Future

March and April 2015 were very busy months for God’s Plan = Our Future!

In early March, Town Hall meetings were held and informational visits were made to several Sunday School classes to answer questions about the upcoming vote at the Church Conference.

On March 8, a pledge of $1,000,000 was received by the Capital Campaign just hours before the Church Conference. God’s blessings are abundant!

At the Church Conference on March 8, a strong majority of members in attendance approved the Building Committee’s motion to move forward with construction and financing for the new Youth/Community Building.

A Charge Conference was held on March 22 to pass a resolution authorizing the Trustees to obtain financing and execute documents required for construction of the Youth/Community Building. The resolution passed by unanimous vote of those in attendance from the Administrative Council. Voting members at a Charge Conference are the elected members of the Administrative Council.

In April, loan documents were signed and approved by Texas Methodist Foundation. Final contracts were signed with Chasco, the general contractor. They will be on-site in early May to begin demolition of the old house and start construction.

A Ground Breaking Ceremony is planned for Sunday, May 17 at 12:30. Members and friends of DSUMC and the Community of Dripping Springs are invited to attend the joyous occasion.

The 3-year God’s Plan=Our Future Capital Campaign is celebrating its 1-year anniversary with the following results as of this writing:

Pledges and Gifts to Date $3,930,500

May 2014 Debt Retirement $1,070,000 Youth/Community Building $3,770,000

Pledges & Gifts Needed to Eliminate the Need for a $ 909,500 Long-term Loan figures have been rounded

To the Point….Lethargy. Yep, that’s it. Just plain ol’ lethargy. Just not gettin’around to it. I’ll do it when………….(fill in the blank) I don’t have time. Too many things to do already. I’m stressed out all the time. Must need a vacation. Yes, you do. Everybody needs to take time off……every day.

Challenge: see how many times you can take off every day. Take one minute the first day, take two the second day, etc. until you work up to ten minutes every day. But there is a rule! He wants to be present every minute and wants your full attention. It’s fun – try it –but don’t tell anybody! Just notice that they will notice a difference in you. Really!

The Star ThrowerI want to share a story I recently heard. You may have already heard it: The Star Thrower.

One day, a man was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a young person reaching down to the sand, picking up something and very gently throwing it back into the sea. As he got closer, he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?" The young person paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the sea." "Why are you throw-ing starfish into the sea?" he asked. "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw

them in they'll die." "But, don't you realize that there are miles of beach here and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!" The young person listened politely. Then knelt down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said... "Made a difference to this one.”

Sometimes the things we are called to do seem so overwhelming it’s hard to know where to start. Such can be the case when we think about helping those who are going through difficult times – the needs are so great and so many, we can’t imagine that we can put a dent in them. But it’s not up to us to determine whether or not our deeds, no matter how small, will make a difference. God can take our smallest gesture and use it to make the biggest impact on someone who is going through a difficult life situation. So when you are feeling lost about how to minister to someone in need, don’t be defeated by the task in front of you. Do or say what you can, even if it feels like a very small gesture. If done with the right attitude, God will use it in a mighty way.

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him Sheila Lamb ~ Nurturing Steward as you have helped his people and continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10)

All are welcome, and I encourage you to invite your friends and family. Wear your sneakers and bring a water bottle. There are rest stops available along the trails of this beautiful Dripping Springs amenity.

Please make an appointment with me ahead of time so that we can establish your baseline blood pressure and weight, as well as obtain a consent, if you have not already done so. We will check these once a month as we walk so that we can measure progress with regard to improving health and mobility.

Caregiving CaféOur first Caregiving Café support group meeting on March 19th was a success! Caregiving Café is a place for caregivers, those who are taking care of a loved one, to meet with a sup-port group of their peers. We had several attendees and much collaborating, commiserating, sharing and supporting was had. If you are a caregiver and want to join us, our meetings are Thursday evenings in the North Annex at 7:00 pm. All are welcome in both the congrega-tion and the community. Please call me at 512-894-7123 ext. 225 to RSVP.

May Is Mental Health Awareness MonthMental health is a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with challenges. Mental health is essential to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships, and the ability to contribute to community or society.

Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, and/or behavior that are associated with distress and/or impaired functioning. Mental disorders contribute to a host of problems that may include disability, pain, or death.

Mental illness is the term that refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders.

Mental health and physical health are closely connected. Mental health plays a major role in people’s ability to maintain good physical health. Mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, affect people’s ability to participate in health-pro-moting behaviors. In turn, problems with physical health, such as chronic diseases, can have a serious impact on mental health and decrease a person’s ability to participate in treatment and recovery.

Join us on Monday, May 11th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm for “Alleviating Anxiety: Your Way to a Peaceful Mind and Body,” presented by Pamela J. Firle, MA, LPC in the Fellowship Hall. A light supper will be served. Please contact Rachel at 512-894-7123 ext. 225 to RSVP.

Lord, Hear Our Cry...Hear the cry and prayers that your servant is praying in your presence this day. 1 Kings 8:28.

Greetings prayer partners! The following are excerpts from the National Day of Prayer website. The 64th annual National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2015, will have profound significance for our country. It is an unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord’s healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne.

The theme for 2015 is Lord, Hear Our Cry, emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator, who is sovereign over all governments, authorities, and men. To further highlight the theme, I Kings 8:28 is the Scripture for this year: “Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.”

For the May 7th observances, Dr. Jack Graham, the 2015 Honorary Chairman, wrote a special prayer to be simultaneously read throughout the nation at noon (EDT). This recitation will create a huge wave of prayer, flowing from one coast to the other, illustrating the unity of God’s people and acknowledging His dominion over the circumstances facing us. Millions of people will gather to pray and we invite each of you to join in wherever you may be.

At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray. Thank you in advance for making this spiritual discipline a personal priority and for standing with us as we encourage others to incorporate prayer in their lives. The Lord has graciously anointed our efforts, empowering them to touch and change many hearts and lives. We look forward to seeing His hand move across our land in exciting ways each May in response to our petitions! In closing, we ask that you prayerfully consider becoming a volunteer in your church or community to lead a National Day of Prayer gathering. May the Lord’s peace fill your heart as you rest in Him throughout the days ahead.

Below are some ideas for how you can actively participate in this year’s National Day of Prayer:

• Have the youth tie red and blue reminder ribbons on the antenna of each car in the parking lot.

• During a National Day of Prayer observance, set aside time to encircle the clergy of your community and pray for wisdom, strength and protection for them and their families.

• Create a “kids’ prayer chain” where each link in the chain bears the name of friends they would like to pray for. Use red, white and blue paper for the links. Have the children add names to the chain and help link them together before the prayer time.

• Use the Lord’s Prayer, phrase by phrase, as a pattern for your order of worship in your National Day of Prayer observance.

• Organize a 24-hour prayer vigil. Have people sign up for a segment of time to pray at home or at the church. Leave the church door open for those who wish to pray in the solitude of the sanctuary.

The sanctuary will be open and communion elements available for those who choose to worship and pray here at Dripping Springs United Methodist Church. Yours in Peace and Prayer, Amy

As part of the National Day of Prayer, DSUMC’s Trail Life USA Troop TX0107 and American Heritage Girl Troop TX0522 will lead a prayer service in our sanctuary starting at 7:00PM on May 7th. Please join them.

Visit Our Prayer Room

During your wanderings around the church, stop by the room with double doors in the upstairs foyer. It is a place of solitude and serenity for those who want to get away from the daily routine and spend some quiet time with their Lord. The Prayer Room is open and available all hours, seven days a week. Feel free to stop by and visit with our Lord. God Bless.

Kairos Prison Ministry Follow-upWe give thanks to the Lord and to everyone who supported the recent Kairos weekend at the Alfred D. Hughes prison in Gatesville. Through your prayers, financial support, help with cookies, placemats and posters, attendance at the closing and a myriad of other ways, you showed the love of God to 42 new "Brothers in White." The entire weekend was once again a blessing to them and to all who experienced it. Those who get to participate in the weekend are especially blessed to do so, but we couldn't do it without the support of our church family. Thank you! The next weekend at the Hughes Unit is October 1st-4th, and the next weekend for the women at the Lane Murray unit is October 28th-31st.

Anyone interested in joining a team can contact either Roger Keats [email protected] (men's team) orMyra Sutherland [email protected] (women's team).
