FREE Award-winning author Morgan Llywelyn is guest speaker, while acclaimed spoken word performer John Cummins performs a festival rap to launch Soundwaves 2016 – and Artwaves, 80 works of talented Fingal artists, displayed around 32 Skerries businesses as part of a guided Art Trail (see panel, far left). New this year: People’s Choice Award: €500 cash and solo exhibition at Skerries Mills in 2017, sponsored by Soundwaves and Seasons. Thursday September 15 ST PATRICK’S CHURCH EXHIBITION St Patrick’s Church, 7pm. FREE Skerries Art School are delighted to present a showcase of beautiful and evocative oil paintings, created by talented young aspiring artists in the beautiful setting of Skerries Mills overlooking St Patrick’s Church, during four mornings in early August. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served to artists and their families on the evening of the 15th. The exhibition then runs until Sunday the 25th. Friday September 16 SKERRIES MINECRAFT PROJECT 2016 Online event, 4pm. Tickets €7 Full weekend of online fun, ‘til Sunday, 9pm. Three competitions this year: Creative, Skerries and Arts (details at soundwavesminecraft.com), three age groups each. Judging takes place before Wrap Party, Sunday, Sept 25, 11am-1.30pm when winners are announced. Five drop-in sessions (pre-book, 90 mins each) at cccSkerries, Kelly’s Bay Rocks, on the Saturday (6 spaces at a time). Tickets include server access and party. Friday September 16 BATTLE OF THE BANDS Little Theatre, 8pm Tickets €5 at door Young local bands perform and compete for a place on the Street Party Rock Trailer. Each act performs three songs including one cover. Judges decide which act wins, based on audience interaction, musicality and individuality. A hit night with great sounds. This year’s line-up, subject to change, includes Golden Elk; Contact the Martian; Girlfriend; Virgin Converters; Civic Party. Interval band: Sir Psycho. Saturday September 17 PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP Skerries Mills, 10.30am–1pm. Tickets €20 Margaret Becker guides you through the steps of drypoint printmaking to help create 2-3 of your own completed print works. Margaret is a stained glass artist and printmaker who, with other artists, founded the Leinster Printmaking Studio in Clane in 1998, dedicated to providing a professional working environment and studio facilities to printmakers. Materials are provided. Only 10 places, so book early. Saturday September 24 COMEDY IMPROVISATION Skerries Mills, 12-2pm. Tickets €5 at door These exciting workshops test your spontaneity stamina at the ultimate comedy challenge of improvisation. Learn the skills, have a go and, most importantly, have a laugh! Held in the Mills Workshop Room (access through Skerries Mills craft shop, upstairs level) and hosted by the talented and stage- experienced Neil Curran. 12pm to 1pm, 12-15-year-olds. 1pm to 2pm, 16+ year-olds. Festival 2016 Saturday September 24 MOZART’S MAGIC FLUTE Little Theatre , 7pm Tickets €8 Join us on a magical journey through a strange fairytale land filled with princes and princesses, wicked queens, magic genies – and a zany bird catcher! North Dublin Opera continues to bring the magic of opera to the youngest of audiences with this colourful and engaging production, full of intrigue and wonder as we follow Tamino on his quest to rescue the Princess Pamina. Bright and exciting introduction to the genius of Mozart. Saturday September 24 SOMETHING HAPPENS! Skerries Mills, 7pm. SOLD OUT Eighties legends Something Happens! trail-blazed a commercial path across the country and beyond, carving a firm place in Irish music history with hit singles ‘Parachute’ and ‘Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello (Petrol)’. Support comes from exceptional London-based Irish Indie rock band Morrissey & Marshall, and Skerries legends Risky Business. Doors 7pm, first act 8pm sharp. VIP pre-show (sold out) strictly 7pm to 9pm, so get there early! Sunday September 25 STORYTELLING Holmpatrick School, 1-4pm. FREE Brilliant performers, two sessions: 1pm- 2pm, Sam O’Reilly warms up the crowd with Dr Seuss, then Deborah Wiseman tickles the imaginations of 3-7 year olds with fantastical tales. 2.15-4pm, John Cummins, celebrated spoken word artist, fresh from Electric Picnic, gives a ‘rhyme-poetry-hippy-hop’ workshop to 8+ year olds before Open Mic for 8+ year olds to perform their five-minute stories (max. six performers, so get there early). Saturday September 24 INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING with ARTIST DAVE WEST Skerries Mills 2-4pm. Tickets €20 ‘Drawing is an act of the will. Anyone can learn to draw’ – so said the famous realist painter and teacher Juliette Aristides. Through the use of historical examples, theory and practical application, this workshop will introduce participants to the practice of drawing. No previous experience is necessary. Workshop is suitable for adults and ages 14 up. Materials are provided but booking is essential as places are limited to just 15. Friday September 30 TRIBAL DRUMMING Little Theatre, workshop 5pm; performance 8-9pm. FREE Celebrating music’s unique ability to include everybody of all abilities, this unique two-hour workshop is hosted by John Bowker and is designed to be inclusive of all groups in our community. It’s kindly assisted on the day by volunteer Transition Year Students of Skerries Community College, along with Skerries Foroige Youth Group. The workshop is followed by an interval, then a one-hour performance by the drummers at 8pm. Sunday September 25 UKULELE ORCHESTRA Skerries Mills Willow Terrace, 2-4pm. FREE Foot-stompingly catchy, ukulele community Ukuhooligans, fresh from their annual Ukulele Festival, strum up a right ‘ukuhooley’. They’re a friendly and welcoming bunch too, in their flowery Hawaiian shirts, so an audience of any age, from tot to OAP, will fit right in at what is invariably a sunshiney, smiley event if ever there was one. Ukuhooligans are Soundwaves regulars and their Willow Terrace ukulele jam has become a firm festival fave. Friday September 23 RED ISLAND ROCKS! Live panel show, Harps Club, 7-9pm. Tickets €10 The bands that filled Red Island Ballroom included rock legends Thin Lizzy, Horslips and Rory Gallagher. Here, Jim Lockhart and Barry Devlin of Horslips chat about what it was like to kick off tours and New Years there back in the day. Joining them is Philomena, mum of late Thin Lizzy frontman, Philip Lynott. Philomena toured with the band in the ‘70s. Plenty of banter and backstage antics. Tickets €2 at train Adding to the colour and vibrancy of our fabulous Festival Street Party, for the second year running, this much-loved tourist road train promises to take you on a short, hop-on, hop-off, loop around our beautiful town. This is one trip that will leave you with a smile on your face for the rest of the day – but please note, children must be accompanied on the train by a guardian at all times during the tour. Sunday September 25 NIGHT PARADE + FIREWORKS Community Centre, 7pm to Skerries Harbour, 8pm. FREE Fire-jugglers and music before joining the Festival Parade, in which Skerries schoolchildren march and display their costumes, banners and floats under this year’s artistic theme ‘Time, as Future, Present and Past’, all the way to Skerries Harbour for the Festival’s Firework Finale at 8pm. CELEBRATING SKERRIES ARTS AND MUSIC RT Festival Saturday September 24 SALVAGE: Voices raised from the Wreck of the Tayleur Sailing Club, 5pm. Tickets €10 Poetry, songs and stories with Enda Coyle-Greene, Darren Hughes and Marie Bashford-Synnott, written to voice the actual words of those caught up in the famous wreck’s aftermath, with songs chosen to reflect its human cost, all performed against the fascinating and vividly told historical background to the tragedy, bringing to life the tale of the iron-hulled, ‘invincible’ Tayleur, which sank off Lambay Island in January 1854. Thursday September 22 CLASSICAL SUMMER BREEZE Holmpatrick Church, 8pm. Tickets €10 Relax and enjoy light classical favourites with Karin Leitner (flute) and Teresa O’Donnell (harp), with mystic Irish airs, Karin’s own heavenly composition and an uplifting and inspirind finale ‘Carnival of Venice’. When Karin played for Kevin Spacey, her video got 8.5m hits on YouTube. Music lecturer and PhD Teresa performs nationwide. This year, Soundwaves is delighted to invite you to ‘rock ‘n’ stroll’ around the town on Friday night, Sept 23, from 9pm, and find just the music to get your toes tapping and hands clapping!
