Irwin Mitchell originals 2018Recognised for celebrating contemporary jazz through adventurous programming, each year the Irwin Mitchell mjf originals commission provides a talented regional artist with an exceptional opportunity to present new work.

This year’s commission has been awarded to harpist and composer Esther Swift, with her composition Light Gatherer, an instrumentation of voice, harp quartet, string trio, piano, saxophone, trombone and percussion inspired by the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy.

Especially resonant as we mark the centenary of women being given the vote, Esther has written a new work which will take words, exploring their meaning and sound, and create a series of pieces which experiment with texture, purpose and expectation.

2018 also sees mjf become a PRS Foundation Keychange Associate, a pioneering European initiative that empowers women to transform the future of the music industry and encourages festivals to sign up to a 50:50 gender balance by 2022 – a figure mjf has already achieved.

Jazz Migration: Novembre (Ticket Band A) Salon Perdu 14.30 - 15.15

She writes honestly and sensitively about female oppression, gender discrimination and violence. Esther’s interest in her contribution to the arts, and especially the voice she gives to women, has inspired her to deconstruct the works, focusing more on their mood and rhythm of speech, and create new texts using the same themes that inform much of Carol Ann’s work.

The music is built around Esther’s regular harp quartet Clouds and calls on her contemporary classical, folk, jazz and poetry backgrounds, and features many of Manchester’s notable improvisers.
