Letter from the President

I hope everyone has had a wonderful, relaxing, and ener-

gizing summer! I know my summer started off on the

productive side with our wonderful AMTA conference at

Auburn University. Josh Pifer did an amazing job plan-

ning the event. He not only brought in our wonderful

guest clinician, Catherine Rollin, guest artist Antoinette

Perry, and member presenters Steven DiBlasi and Tatiana

Kasman; but also, he achieved the highest pre-registration

number EVER!!!

I personally invited a non-member as a ‘buddy.’ He made comments about how great our conference was and

how the high level of both recitals and presentations was extremely impressive. I encourage you to invite a

friend to be your ‘buddy’ next year. This is a great way for someone to attend the conference their first time!

However, don’t wait just until conference time to encourage your colleagues to join MTNA. Anytime is a

good time to invite someone into your local association, but most people will not join or stay if the do not feel

WELCOME. To quote an MTNA e-mail, exemplify:

Welcome packet given Encourage participation Leadership oppor tunities offered Constant communication One person tells another Mentor new members Educate new members about MTNA benefits

Remember to donate to the MTNA Foundation Fund. I would love to see Alabama in the top 5% again for

Highest Percentage of Members Contributing. Last year we were number 4 at 17.79%. If even HALF of our

members donated to the Foundation at any amount, that number would be a wonderful unheard of 50%!!

Remember the whole purpose of the MTNA Foundation Fund is to help make a more musical tomorrow

through programs that nurture the creation, performance, study and teaching of music. One way they achieve

this is by offering grants that anyone can apply for. If you as an individual or your local association are inter-

ested in applying for a grant, go to mtnafoundation.org.

As our school year begins, I’m excited to represent AMTA again at the leadership summit this September. I

know it will be bittersweet to say goodbye to our summer, but I look forward to serving AMTA for another

year. It will be great to see how our organization can continue to excel!

The 65th

Annual AMTA Conference at Auburn University on June 1-3, 2017

I finally got some sleep and rest last week. I learned a lot from my first attempt at putting on a conference. I have a newfound respect and appreciation for everyone who has served in the role of VP. We had some kinks along the way with IT issues and Banquet date mix ups with the caterers, but overall, I was told that the 65th AMTA Conference was a successful event filled with many great things. Needless to say, it was an exciting couple of days. I want to first off extend my heart felt gratitude to all my colleagues and students who helped to make this conference a success. It was truly a communal effort. We had a record attendance of 84 this year! We had 79 preregister and 5 walk in. The unfortunate last-minute change of the Banquet from Thursday to Friday turned out to be a hidden blessing to those who were able to attend on Friday. The weather was beautiful and the view of the pond at sunset with the delicious food was a memorable experience. I sincerely apologize for those who were not able to attend the banquet on Friday. The caterers had changed the dates on me without me knowing which weighed heavily on my heart especially since several people were not able to partake in the banquet festivities including our Guest Artist. We kicked off our conference with an impressive Opening Concert with our Alabama MTNA Winners and State Collegiate Winners. We celebrated our talented students in Alabama by having over 120 of our accom-plished student performers participate in winners’ recitals and masterclasses. The Members Recital was filled with variety and excellent playing. We had all six instrumental categories represented: piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The 2017 AMTA Commissioned Work by Doug Bristol was well re-ceived. Both Antoinette Perry and Catherine Rollin said to me that they were very impressed with the high level of excellent musicianship at the Members Recital. Yeah ALABAMA!!! A special thanks to our own Tatiana Kasman and Steven DiBlasi, who both gave wonderful informative presentations for our attendees. Our two collegiate members, Casey Rickles and Andrea Tiffany, from UAH gave a wonderful session on technology which sparked many questions and discussion. Our launch to a string track at our conference was a small but celebrated success. Our one string teacher who attended the conference told me that it was so wonderful to have a string emphasis and that she is definitely coming back next year and will bring her friends with her. Our Guest Strings Clinician Guy Harrison shared his excitement to be able to meet and work with some of the string teachers and students in Alabama. Many of the collegiate pianists who attended the strings masterclass told me afterwards that they truly enjoyed it and learned so much about phrasing and how to better collaborate with string players as a pianist. Guy Harrison and Laurie Middaugh also gave an exciting and dramatic performance at the Members Recital. Many of the members who attended the conference expressed to me how happy they were to see a string track at the confer-ence this year and shared with me their hopes of having more participation and opportunities for other instru-ments in the years to come. I give AMTA my commitment for next year’s conference to have another string track and possibly another opportunity for other instruments such as voice, woodwinds, or brass. A special thanks to all of our sponsors this year. Pam Penick rocked it with getting over 20 advertisements for our conference booklet this year! We even sold out of conference booklets before the last Division II recital! We had quite a few parents disappointed. My sincere apologies to the parents who were not able to get a con-ference booklet. I will be ordering a larger number next year. Noteworthy told me they had almost record sales this year and were so happy to be our chief vendor for our conference. I want to thank Jon McClaran and the Alabama Piano Gallery for sponsoring a lovely guest artist reception after Antoinette Perry’s concert and a guest clinician breakfast reception for Catherine Rollin. Our Guest Artist Antoinette Perry gave a breathtaking, mesmerizing, stunning recital. Her playing was so pro-found and beautiful that she had many of us in tears several times during the concert. It was truly a transcend-ent experience. Several members told me that her concert was one of the best recitals they have ever heard. Many also said that her masterclass with the collegiate performers was refreshing and eye opening. Antoinette took the time to work with each individual student on technique and body usage. She then showed the stu-dents how to work on developing their technique. Finally, she had the students use this new technical ap-proach in their music to improve the quality of their performance and expression.

5

Our Guest Clinician Catherine Rollin was wonderful and so personable. She constantly spent time talking to teachers and students and giving her time generously. She gave two wonderfully informative and education-al sessions as well as two great masterclasses for our pre-college students. Many members told me how much they enjoyed and appreciated learning from Catherine. Noteworthy called her a “True Rock Star!” Catherine’s genuine humanity and love for students really touched many. I heard her tell a young student who wanted to get her signature: “Can I sign your book after you play for me in the masterclass so I can write something very personal to you?” The smile on the student’s face was priceless. Congratulations to everyone who had students perform at the AMTA State Conference. Congratulations to everyone who performed and presented at your conference. Congratulations to everyone who attended and participated in making this year’s conference an exciting conference. I am truly honored to serve and be a part of such an amazing organization filled with great people. AMTA is amazing!!! Thank you for this op-portunity. I will continue to enjoy working hard to give you all another great conference next year on May 31 – June 2, 2018 at Auburn University. Thank you so very much. Sincerely, Joshua K. Pifer—AMTA VP/President Elect

BIRMINGHAM METRO MUSIC FORUM

The Birmingham Metro Music Forum kicked off the 2016-2017 season with a potluck social on August 21 at the home of BMMF president Margery Whatley. It was a fun time with great conversation and fabulous

food!

The membership enjoyed an array of informative and enlightening programs presented at Alabama Piano Gallery:

October 19, 2016: Tiers within Texture: Deconstructing and Reducing an Accompaniment, presented by Lucy DeSa.

January 21, 2017: Judges Workshop with Kevin Chance. February 15, 2017: The Pedal as a Means for Musical Expression, presented by Jeremy Samolesky. April 19, 2017: Teaching the Classics as a Foundation for Expressiveness at the Piano, presented by Don

Sanders.

The popular BMMF Monthly Recitals, which feature performances by students of BMMF members, were held at Alabama Piano Gallery on October 1, November 5, December 10, February 4, March 4, and April 1.

The BMMF Theory Examinations (which also include sight reading and ear training and are based on the

Keith Snell Theory Books) and Master Class were held at Samford University on January 28. Following the theory exams, Barbara Shinn conducted a terrific and entertaining master class, engaging not only the stu-dents performing, but also the entire audience. The master class was followed by a presentation of certifi-

cates and trophies. What a wonderful opportunity for all the students who participated!

We did not have a New Music Festival this year, but we are excited to announce that we are moving forward with a collaboration between our BMMF and BAMA (Birmingham Art Music Alliance) for a joint New Mu-sic Festival which will be held October 14, 2017 at Alabama Piano Gallery. This new format will include

pieces that have been composed by BAMA members and will be performed by our students.

New officers for 2017-2019 were elected at our April 19 meeting: President – Brent Reeves, Vice-President – Margery Whatley, Treasurer – Kathy Burdette, Secretary – Valerie Merrell.

Huntsville Area News for District VIII

The AMTA District Piano Audition is scheduled for April 14, 2018, unless it is changed by the First Baptist Church. We are on the calendar and approval is expected, but it could possibly change if this date conflicts with church events.

The KRL Emerging Arts Award to HMTA President, Dr. Melody Ng

The Community Ballet Association of Huntsville honors outstanding volunteers each year at their Annual Awards Dinner. The first award, the Virginia Hammill Simms Award, is given to a deserving person who is nominated by a non-profit organization. In 2015 a new award category was included as part of this ceremony. The new category is the Katherine & Richard Lester Emerging Arts Contribution Award which was created to recognize an individual that is newer to the arts community and not over the age of 35. They must be nominat-ed by a non-profit organization in this area also. The Huntsville Music Teachers Association nominated our president, Melody Ng, this year. We were delighted that she was selected by a panel of out-of-state judges. The presentation banquet was held on April 8, 2017 at the VBC. This award comes with a $750 check for our organization! Melody, along with many other members of HMTA, has worked to grow our organization. HMTA has had 2 “Palooza” events involving multiple pianos of both pre-college and college students, with Melody as our “director/conductor.” This past year our Palooza was held at the Huntsville Public Library with Tamar Saliashvili as its coordinator. Melody was involved in the “Celebration Suite,” composed by Eugenie Rocherolle, which showcased the different aspects of our city’s growth. For this event and our first 2 Palooza events Diana Pettit was the president of HMTA, and Melody was the President-elect. We HMTA members came together to work to make these the events successful with their leadership. This Suite was performed lat-er in the year at the Huntsville Music Study Club’s April meeting with Melody as our director. Melody has also worked to create live music events at Clearview Cancer Institute and the Huntsville Interna-tional Airport while making music with special needs students with Autism, ADHD, and Asperger’s Syn-drome. Her commitment to bring our community together through music is well-documented! HMTA says “Congratulations” to Melody, and by the way, we are the smallest organization in the Arts Community of Huntsville! The ASRA awards for the Outstanding Division III String Student and the Outstanding Division III Piano Stu-dent went to students of our Huntsville Area Teachers -- Barbara Poularikas and Susan Hoop! Congratulations to both teachers and students!

Teacher of the Year: Elizabeth Rutland

The Teacher of the Year award this year goes to a person who exemplifies the highest standards of a teacher: modest, compassionate, and caring. Teaching is a life-long commitment for Elizabeth for whom teaching be-gan at age 13 when she taught the neighborhood children. Nationally certified in music, Elizabeth teaches and has also served as an organist, pianist for a community chorus, and plays often at a nursing home. She has students who perform at all events – recitals, community performances, and competitions. Often the students are winners at the competitions. She always has time to encourage and help other teachers. As an officer in the local Auburn/Opelika association, the other teachers can count on Elizabeth to help in any way they need. After she joined our organization, she has attended every AMTA conference except one (when she performed for her niece’s wedding). Elizabeth puts her students first. In her own words, she states “My philosophy of teaching is based on the con-cept of music as a vital part of my life – a God-given mission. I am not in it for the money (though it does help!). I try to give my best efforts to each one of them and inspire them to give their best.” Former students are very happy to return from college, sit down with her, have tea, and tell her about their time in college. She is a big reason music is in the lives of these students. She also reaches beyond the piano students in her area and works on collaboration with other teachers and stu-dents. Sometimes the collaborations include her own compositions. She is a skillful composer, and her com-positions have been performed many times, including the Members’ Recital at AMTA. A coworker stated: “Music is more to her than just sounds. It is a vehicle that transports life to a more beautiful realm. She has a lovely, transformative spirit and I believe her gift of developing young musicians through the years is a gift truly worthy of recognition.” Finally, from another person: “Do I recommend her, the quiet artist who loves music enough to teach it? For those of us who come and sit and listen and play and practice and cry occasionally and smile, she shows us how to lose ourselves into something complete and great, into music.”

Jodean Tingle—Immediate Past-President
