Sound that doesnt exist in the story world. Non-Diegetic Sound consists of a source that is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action: narrator's commentary. e.g. Theme songNarration

Parallel Sound

Sound that wed usually associate with a given genre

Contrapuntal Sound

Sound that is in contrast with the film/clip being shown

Other types of sound

Crescendo Sound

Crescendo sound is sound involves the build up of sound to foreshadow/imply that something significant is going to happen.e.g.The movie Jaws uses Crescendo sound to imply that a shark attack will be taking place. This is done by starting off with slower music and then accelerating the pitch as the event gets closer to time.

Diminuendo Sound

Diminuendo sound involves the dying down of sound to indicate that a threat has passed/gone away.e.g.In an episode of CSI namely Strip Strangler the music builds up as the camera approaches the woman, but dies down after the woman goes back to to sleep. The dying down of the music indicates that the threat is gone.

Forzando Sound

Forzando sound involves the use of quick, sharp and loud sound to emphasise shock or fear. e.g.Forzando sound is prominently used in the movie Paranormal Activity during the scenes that involve doors and other objects moving/shutting.

The significance of sound- It is evident that the use of appropriate sound in media can be of extreme significance in order to emphasise a particular concept/scene. In the thriller genre, sound is usually used in order create suspense, tension and anticipation. The use of sound can be used to manipulate a scenario to perceive it a different manner. An example of this would be using joyful music during a murder scene. Sound can also be used to change the mood of a particular scene or to help transition into a new scene.

What sounds will I be using in my opening sequence? Here are a few sounds that I think will be fitting for my opening sequence.

Slow/sad music to emphasise a character reflecting on their actions. The sound of a baseball bat smashing against an object.Heartbeat to emphasise the increasing anxiety of the main character. Various types of instrumentals throughout the opening sequence. The sound of a moving train. The sound of banging on walls.

Evaluation - After completing this task I realised the importance of sound in Media. When used correctly, sound can be a valuable asset when creating a film. The idea of sound manipulation can emphasise a concept/event much more than any given visual effect can.- I feel more confident now when it comes to identifying different types of sound, and implementing them in my own opening sequence. - I have also learnt that the use of visual effects arent always as powerful as the use of sound, as sound can add emotion, rhythm and meaning to a scene in a way that visual effects cant.
