DIEGETIC AND NON DIEGETIC

• Diegetic is the artificial details and information within the scene created by telling a story, it sound that is within the scene that would be heard by characters, that is normal sound within a scene. For example in a scene with superman when he is in a scene flying away from Lois's house and he hears/the audience hears a memory that his father said to him this is diegetic because he hears it within his mind so therefore we hear it as well.

• Non Diegetic is sound that would not be heard in that world, for example a sound track or a voice over. For example when a person is speaking over a scene if the person speaking is not linked into the scene then this is non diegetic.

SOUND TERMINOLOGY

• Synchronous Sound/Asynchronous sound

Synchronous sound is sound that fits in to the scene, its music that corresponds with for example clashing of swords whereas Asynchronous sound is music that doesn’t fit in with the pace or beat of the action taking place on the screen. Also speech that is in time with lip movement or dubbed.

• Parallel/contrapuntal sound

Parallel is sound that fits in with the scene also and contrapuntal is sound that is in contrast with the scene but doesn’t fit what's going on so an example for parallel is romantic music being played when a couple move closer together however with contrapuntal its like a nursery rhyme being played in a horror movie when someone is being chased or stabbed.

• Sound Bridge

VERISIMILITUDE

• Verisimilitude is the appearance or semblance of truth so it’s the attempt to create or the believability of a story within a drama.

• The more the story resembles reality even in small detail the easier it is for the audience to engage.#

• Saving private Ryan can be an example of verisimilitude as the writer/director tried to make the sound within the film as realistic as he can. So by having live grenade sounds it give a more realistic sense that they are there as well.

• So how believable it is can be dependent on the audience.
