Paris, 6 September 2018- Sotheby’s is pleased to announce a new sale dedicated toJewelleryandWatchesinParisthisautumn.Thisnewdateintheauctioncalendar,entitledJoaillerieParis,willcoincidewithadouble-anniversarythisyearforSotheby’sinFrance:theauctionhouse’s50yearsonFrenchsoil,and20yearsinthehistoricGalerieCharpentier.Tomarktheoccasion,wewillpresentJewelsandWatchesfromthelate19thand20thcentury,alongsideasmallselectionofcontemporarycreations,thuscombiningtheemblematicwiththeoriginal.AmongthedesignsonofferwillbepiecesbyFrance’smostillustriousjewelleryhouses such as Boucheron, Boivin, Cartier, M. Gérard, Sterlé, Van Cleef & Arpels andChaumet, including jewels setwith important diamonds, Kashmir sapphires and Burmeserubies.The new sale will also highlight two celebrated French stars, and their admiration forCartier:wewillofferseveralArtDécojewelsfromthecollectionofstardancerandfashioniconZiziJeanmaire,aswellasaneveningbaggivenbyactorAlainDelontohislongtimeco-starandpartner,NewWavemuse,actressanddirectorMireilleDarc,inthe1960s.

Theworldof20th-centuryballetanddanceinFranceisdeeplyintertwinedwiththeworkoftwo artists: Zizi Jeanmaire, star of themusic hall, and Roland Petit, a choreographer anddancerwhoconstantlyreinventedhisstyleandvisuallanguage.Inhiswords,“Dance,inallitssophistication,mustalsobethereflectionofitstime;itsvocabularyisprecise,andsoall

The sale on October will also present a vermeil evening bagadornedwith sapphires and diamondswhichwas a gift fromAlainDelontohislongtimepartnerMireilleDarcinthe1960s.The French actress was fond of carrying this charmingaccessory with her when she went to the opera, and it ischaracteristic of Cartier’s designs of the time. The motiffeaturing radiating lines perfectly complement its shape, andthe clasp is set with a cabochon sapphire and brilliant-cutdiamonds(estimate:€7,000-10,000).

Theoverarchingthemewhichbringsthesaletogetheristhefreedom,romanceandeleganceofParis,whichhasalwaysprovidedinspirationforthegreatest jewellersofthecity’scelebratedPlaceVendôme, ledbyCartier.AdiamondringsetwithaKashmirsapphireweighing6.45carats from around 1980 (estimate: €200,000-400,000) and adiamond solitaire, featuring a 5.17-carat pear-shaped stone, signedby Cartier (estimate: €250,000-350,000), are among the stand-outpiecesinthisgroup.
Exclusive to Cartier’s prestigious Paris branch, a model A,pendule Mystérieuse clock, is sure to be among the mosthighly anticipated lots in the sale (estimate: €350,000-550,000). Embellished with agate, enamel and diamonds, itdatesfromthe1930s,themostacclaimedperiodofproductionforthisprestigiousjewelleryhouse.Named for the secret mechanism cleverly hidden in theirdesign,theseclocksknownaspendulesMystérieuseshavelongbeen a source of fascination: they bring together preciousmaterials and ingenious design, the result of many longmonthsofcarefulcraftsmanship.
The finest workmanship is also on display elsewhere in the sale,reflecting Parisian tastes. An example is a Chaumet ring set with astunningKashmirsapphireweighing12.84carats.Renownedfortheirintense deep blue hue, their clarity and their rarity, sapphires fromKashmirarethemostsought-afterintheworld(estimate:€100,000–200,000).Thering’sprovenance–thecollectionofafamilyfromtheFrenchnobility–completesthejewel’simpeccablepedigree.
ThesecreationswillbeofferedalongsidejewelsfromillustriousjewelleryhousesincludingVanCleef&Arpels,suchasagoldanddiamonddemi-paruremadeupofapairofearringsandabrooch,fromthe1950s(estimate:€6,000-8,000);M.Gérardwithademi-parureingoldsetwithcabochonrubiesandbrilliant-cutdiamonds,whichwillbesoldtobenefittheNotre Dame foundation (estimate: €30,000-50,000); and a pair of ruby and diamondearringsfrom1930,signedbyRenéBoivin(estimate:€40,000-60,000).
