The Lycoming College Tour Choir Conducted by Dr. Fred Thayer, the Choir has been widely acclaimed as one of the finest college musical groups in the East. Since its inception in 1947 by Walter McIver, the Choir has presented concerts in every state east of the Mississippi River, California, Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, and Argentina. The Choir had a ten-day tour in Argentina in May 2010. Foreign tours occur approximately every three years. The Tour Choir is selected each year by competitive audi-tion from the 120-voice College Choir, which is comprised of students from all academic fields. Approximately 40 students are chosen annually to perform in two weekend tours and a ten-day spring break tour. The Spring 2011 ten-day tour will begin in McSherrystown, PA, followed by concerts in Florida including Boynton Beach, Boca Raton,

Lakeland, Seminole, Bradenton, Palm Harbor, and Celebration. In its six decades of music, the Lycoming College Choir has performed hundreds of concerts including appearances at the National Cathedral, the Washington Shrine, the Crystal Cathedral, Coral Ridge, and New York City’s St. John the Divine and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The ensemble has sung with the Gregg Smith Singers, the Chief-tains, and Barry Manilow. The choir has been featured twice in the Holiday Celebrations at the White House. This spring, the choir is releasing its ninth CD, “My Spirit Sings.” The Choir’s repertoire con-sists of both religious and secular music, ranging from contempo-rary to traditional. The Choir performs for all musical tastes, from listener to critic. The public is invited to hear this fine concert that offers all music lov-ers an enjoyable experience.

The Conductor and Accompanists As professor of music and director of choral activities at Lycoming College, Fred Thayer conducts three choirs: Lycoming College Choir (120 members), Chamber Choir (28 members), and Tour Choir (40 members). He is the recipient of Lycom-ing College’s Logan Richmond Professorship. Fred Thayer’s graduate degrees are in composition with

a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Cornell University, study-ing with Karel Husa and Robert Palmer. This year, as a member of ASCAP, he received his 27th annual ASCAP PLUS award. His compositions include two operas, three works for orchestra, two works for band and more than 75 choral works. Having a long association with the professional ensemble, the Gregg Smith Singers, Fred Thayer served as their associate conductor at the summertime Adirondack Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, N.Y. for 23 years. The GSS and the Adirondack Chamber Orchestra jointly commissioned him to write 10 works since 1982. Richard J. Lakey is cur-rently the director of music at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Williamsport. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in

While at Westminster, he was awarded the Alexander Mc-Curdy Organ Scholarship, and through his music ministry has given numerous organ recitals. Lakey earned a Master of Music Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been a part-time in-structor of organ and piano at Ly-coming, and for the past 22 years has accompanied the Lycoming College Choir. In previous years,

the Choir has performed his Te Deum and several anthems. His Missa Brevis was performed by the Lycoming College Chamber Choir and the Gregg Smith Sing-ers. Paraclete Press and Shawnee Press have published several of his compositions for choir. Lee Saville-Andree is an experienced solo, collaborative and ensemble pianist. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Mu-sic Education from Susquehanna University, specializing in piano.

Lee is in his fourth year of part-time accompanying at Lycoming College and teaching vocal/class-room music of Loyalsock Town-ship schools in Williamsport.

Music Department FellowshipsPerforming a diverse repertoire from vocal jazz to major works, the Chamber Choir is made up of Choral Fellowship recipi-ents. Each member receives an

annually renewable $500 tuition remission. By auditioning, stu-dents of all majors may qualify for this award.
