The theme of this quarter’s newsletter is giving back. OU ASDA has truly made an effort this semester to reach out to

OU ASDA Picture Poetry: A reflection on the fellowship, free food, and fun side of OU ASDA

An overhand serve started the new school year rightWhen OU ASDA members played volleyball all through the night.

There were vampires...

...and turtles oh my!and lifeguards...

And spectators that hung out with this very hairy guy.

The Oklahoma Dental Association is one of a kindAt the BBQ picnic, we had such a good time

The fellowship was amazing and the food was delish

All ASDA events should have bouncy castles, we wished

Some of our members prefer a different kind of gameThe Open-Wide golf tournament puts others to shame

It was a great time away from books, cast models, and tests

For nature lovers, there was plenty to see of Oklahoma’s best

Happy Hour at Iguana Grill happened in mid-SeptemberGood food and drinks with friends we will always remember

Events like these are truly sentimental

But couldn’t have been done without Patterson Dental

DentFest allows students to learn about new dental products, services and such

But winning things like an Apple TV and Thunder tickets sure adds a nice touch

We end our poetry saga with the grandest event of the year

Where vendors come and dental students get free stuff and free beer

OU  ASDA  reaches  out  to  OKC  Douglass  Mid-‐High  SchoolBy Sneha Patel, ’15, OU ASDA member

Being a member of OU ASDA has multiple benefits. Access to vendors, fellowship with other dental students, gaining leadership skills, building confidence, and learning about organized dentistry are priceless entities to a future dentist that can be gained by joining. However, often we get caught up in what ASDA can do for us as dental students that we forget what it can do for our community. The executive officers of OU ASDA have made a goal to get more involved with helping out our local community this year.

On October 12, OU ASDA teamed up with the Oklahoma Dental Foundation and Douglass Mid-High School in Oklahoma City to perform dental screenings on the students at the school. The students ranged from 7th grade through 12th grade. A total of 151 students were screened. Of those students, 83 students were referred to the ODF for needing treatment – either fillings or extractions – on the mobile dental van.

Dental students volunteered through OU ASDA to perform the dental screenings/oral health education as a prelude to the dental treatment that would be scheduled to take place on October 29, 30, and 31. DS3s performed the screenings, while DS1s & DS2s talked to the students about oral health, brushing, and flossing. It was a very valuable experience for all the dental students to be able to get out in the community and apply the skills they have acquired in their education.

This screening was a continuation of an ongoing collaboration between Douglass Mid-High School, the ODF, and the OU College of Dentistry. The principal of the school attributes health as a major factor contributing to student absences. As a response to this issue, a huge effort has been made to bring in outside community health resources to help reduce the number of school absences so that the students can receive the best education possible.

The  ASDA  National  Leadership  Conference   in  Chicago  was  unlike  any  conference  I  have  ever  attended.  I  was   blown   away   by   all  the   great  speakers   and   continued   to  sit  at  the  edge  of  my  seat  waiting  for  the  next  bit  of  great  advice  for  dentists.  One  of  my  favorite  sessions   was   titled,   Personality   Plus:  Understanding  Your   Individual   Leadership   Style.  Mary  Byers,  speaker  and  consultant,  spoke  about  taking  the  time   to  understand  people  and   how   they   work,   i.e.   what  makes   them   tick.  This   was   an   extremely   helpful   lecture  because   leaders  (or  dentists  for  that  matter)   easily   fall  into  the   trap  of  asking  others   to  do  things  a  certain  way  and/or  by  a  certain  time.  For  dentists,  we  might  have  the  wrong  people  working  the  front  desk.  We  might  want  to  move   them  from  being  an  assistant  to  a   front  office  manager,  or  vise   versa.  Having  the   right  people   in  the   right  spot  can  take  your  business   to   a   new   level  by   allowing   individuals   to  work   in   their  strengths.  We   all  know   this   to  be   true,  but  Mary   gave   some   fantastic   examples   for   dental  practitioners  and  how  it  would  ultimately  help  you  out  in  the   long  run.  I  found  all  of  the   speakers   at  the  NLC  excellent  and  hope  to  see  them  in  the  future.  I  am  glad  the  OU  Chapter  was  able  to  send  me  to  the  1st  ever  NLC  event  in  Chicago.

This  was  my  first  time   to  ever  attend  an  ASDA  National  meeting  and  I  am  so  grateful  that  I  was   given  the  opportunity  to  do  so.  I  have  never  felt  so  inspired  and  motivated  in   one   weekend   as   I   felt   after   leaving   the   National   Leadership   Conference.   Each  speaker  was  wonderful  and  offered  excellent  advice  for  how  to  improve  yourself  as   a  leader  and  as  a  future   dentist.  My   favorite   session  I  attended  was  "Workforce  Forum:  Protecting  Your  Profession"  given  by  Dr.  Carter  Brown  from  the  Academy  of  General  Dentistry.  Dr.  Brown   spoke   about  some   of  the   "hot   topics"   involving   our  profession  today,   focusing   a   lot   on  student   debt  and   mid-‐level   providers.   It   really   opened  my  eyes   to   how   uneducated   law   makers   and   the   general   public   are   when   making  decisions   about  our  profession,  and   that  we  as  dentists   and   leaders   need   to   express  our  voices  more  and  be  proactive  in  the  direction  we  want  our  futures  to  go.  Being  the  ASDA   Communications   Chair,   I   also   enjoyed   the   session   "Communications   Ideas  Exchange"  where  we  got   to   interact  with  other  schools   and   hear  how  they   develop  their  newsletter,  recruit  new  members,  and  give   back   to  current  members.   I   cannot  wait  to  implement  these   ideas   to  our  ASDA   chapter,  and  make   it   the   best  it   can  be!  Overall,  I  feel  this  weekend  pulled  me  out  of  my  jaded  mentality  toward  the  stressful  second   year  of  dental  school,  and  put  me  back   on  track   to   seeing   the   big  picture   of  being   apart   of  an  AMAZING   profession.  Of   course   being   in  my   favorite   city   in   the  world,  Chicago,  was  just  an  added  bonus  to  a  wonderful  experience!

“A  first  year  at   the   first  ever  National  Leaders  Conference”,  kind  of  rolls   right  off  the  tongue.  This  was   the   first  ASDA  conference   for  me  and  let  me  just  say  that  they  could  not  have   left   a  better  impression.  We  showed  up  ten   strong,  representing  OUCOD   in  best  possible   light.  Our  very  first  speaker,  Ryan  Estis,  came   out  swinging  with  one  of  the  best  keynotes   I  have  ever  heard.  Each  breakout  session  that  followed,  continued  to  expand  on  the   key   concepts   presented   in   that  keynote.  One  of  my   favorite   breakout  sessions  was   “Recruiting  First  Years  and  Pre-‐Dental  Students,”  where  Kyle  Beulke  gave  some   great   ideas   on   how  to   increase   involvement   in  ASDA.  One   of   the   most   useful  ideas   I  took  away  from  the   session  was  how  to  give  an  “elevator  speech”  by  providing  60  seconds   about  what  ASDA  is  and  what  it  does.  Overall  the  experience  was  amazing  and  even  with  a  huge  Biochemistry  exam  looming  over  my  head,  I  managed  to  soak  up  as  much  of  the  big  city  and  conference  as  I  could.

As  students,  it  is  often  difficult  for  us  to  see  beyond  the  next  test,  next  practical,  next  patient,  or  even  envision  graduation  day.    We  find  ourselves  consumed  with  school  and  sometimes  are  willing  to  let  the  rest  of  the  world  fade  into  the  background.    Remember  when  you  used  to  work  out  after  school  in  undergrad?    Or  give  your  sweet  Nana  a  call  just  because?    Well,  you  get  what  I’m  saying.    We  are  busy  and  don’t  have  much  time  for  life  outside  of  school.    The  precious  time  we  do  have  we  spend  with  the  people  we  love  and  doing  the  few  easy  hobbies  we  have  that  are  still  manageable.    Time  is  everything  to  a  dental  student  and  it  can  be  a  powerful  gift  to  offer  to  the  field  of  dentistry.  The  point  of  ASDA’s  annual  Pizza  and  Politics  session  and  ADPAC  drive  is  to  ask  dental  students  for  an  hour  of  their  time  and  a  few  dollars  from  their  pocket  to  help  a  very  important  cause.

ADPAC  stands  for  the  American  Dental  Political  Action  Committee.    It  is  the  bipartisan  branch  of  the  American  Dental  Association  that  represents  dental  issues  to  our  politicians.    They  represent  not  only  dentists,  but  also  dental  students.    Some  important  issues  that  ADPAC  frequently  discusses  with  our  lawmakers  include:  student  loan  debt  and  repayment,  access  to  dental  care,  community  dental  health  programs,  taxation  of  medical  equipment,  midlevel  provider  care,  reimbursement  rates  for  dentists,  insurance  company  influence  in  the  profession,  and  workforce  diversity.    We  are  fortunate  to  have  such  a  well-‐represented  profession.    Our  lobbyists  celebrate  frequent  successes  and  their  opinions  are  considered  indicative  of  our  profession  as  a  whole.  Lawmakers

know  that  ADPAC  represents  the  approximately  80%  of  all  dentists  in  the  U.S.  who  are  ADA  members.    ADPAC  also  uses  their  powerful  voice  to  represent  dental  students,  and  we  have  a  simple  way  to  give  our  support  back  –  join  ADPAC.

Pizza  and  Politics  presents  this  information  to  OUCOD  dental  students  and  serves  as  an  outlet  to  ask  for  support  of  ADPAC.    This  October,  ASDA  Legislative  Liaison,  Gabe  Luttrell,  presented  the  purpose  of  ADPAC  to  our  students  and  why  it  is  important  to  join.  This  year  our  guest  speakers,  Dr.  Raymond  Cohlmia  and  Dr.  Krista  Jones,  spoke  about  how  they  work  on  a  state  level  through  the  Oklahoma  Dental  Association’s  DENPAC  (Dental  Political  Action  Committee).  The  turnout  this  year  was  great  filling  all  80  chairs  in  our  meeting  room.    Many  students  chose  to  join  ADPAC  during  our  membership  drive  and  will  be  receiving  an  ADPAC  membership  pin.    If  you  didn’t  get  a  chance  to  join  it  is  never  too  late!    ASDA  Legislative  Liaisons  Gabe  Luttrell  (DS3),  Carlie  Mae  Hall  (DS2)  and  Justin  Young  (DS1)  can  sign  you  up  anytime.    A  student  membership  is  only  five  dollars  and  demonstrates  your  commitment  to  supporting  the  dental  profession.

A  big  thanks  to  the  Oklahoma  Dental  Association  for  providing  pizza  and  drinks  for  us  again  this  year,  we  truly  appreciate  their  support  of  ASDA.    We  will  be  hosting  another  event  in  the  spring  to  bring  awareness  to  the  political  action  committee  that  works  at  the  state  level  called  Oklahoma  DENPAC.    We  look  forward  to  seeing  you  all  there!

I  hope  many  of  you  had  the  opportunity  to  meet  our  recent  visitor  from  Turkey,  Gokay  Karapinar.  I  know  that  we  all  had  crazy  schedules  with  studying  for  classes  and  boards  and  seeing  patients  in  clinic  and  some  folks  didn’t  get  the  opportunity  to  get  to  know  Gokay.

Gokay  and  I  have  been  working  together  on  a  research  project  over  the  Denver  Growth  Study.  This  fall  he  got  the  opportunity  to  travel  from  the  University  of  Instanbul  (not  Constantinople)  to  visit  OUCOD.  Through  the  IADS,  International  Association  of  Dental  Students,  he  was  able  to  travel  here  to  work  for  two  weeks.

He  does  not  envy  our  school  hours!  In  Turkey,  they  attend  school  from  9am  to  4pm.  That  doesn’t  mean  there  is  any  slacking  though.  He  was  killing  it  at  our  board  exam  quizzing  with  no  preparation  at  all  (any  volunteers  for  taking  their  boards  in  Turkish?).

Gokay  will  be  presenting  the  Pindings  of  our  research  at  his  university’s  version  of  ScientiPic  Day.  In  Turkey,  dental  school  starts  right  after  secondary  school.  Wouldn’t  it  be  nice  to  graduate  with  a  dental  degree  at  22  years  old!  Even  if  he  gets  into  a  residency  program  he  will  be  a  specialist  at  age  25  or  26.

While  Gokay  was  here,  we  had  fun,  ate  Mexican  food,  shared  family  time;  my  kids  even  got  to  learn  a  bit  of  Turkish.  Be  sure  to  read  Gokay’s  own  account  on  the  OU  ASDA  blog  page.  And  if  you’ve  a  date  in  Constantinople,  she’ll  be  waiting  in  Instanbul.

Where did you go to dental school?University of Kentucky

Where did you do your Endo Residency?

Veteran’s Hospital in Long Beach, CA. It’s probably

the best clinical program in the country, and it was

a lot of fun.

10

How long have you

been teaching at

OUCOD?

15 years.

What is your favorite part about teaching?Working with the students in pre-clinic lab, I enjoy that.

What is your favorite tooth to do a root canal on?#8 or #9

Most memorable endo

experience?

A student once overextended

the gutta percha (6 or 7 mm

past the apex) of #9. Another

[student] overextended 10-12

mm out a palatal root.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not at the school?I like to read and spend time with my family.

What kind of genre do you like to read?Mostly either a thriller or mystery. Right now I’m reading the Jack Reacher series of books.

What is your biggest fear?

That I wouldn’t get my kids through college

and without debt. When you have kids it’s a

whole little layer of responsibility that comes

with a layer worry and fear about them.

What is your favorite food?

My wife is a great cook. She is half Indian and

half Chinese. She has an Indian chicken dish

that I like. I grew up in New Jersey, I like Italian

food (pizza and fresh pasta). We often go to

Benvenuti’s in Norman.

What is your favorite candy?M&M’s

What’s your favorite holiday?I’d say Thanksgiving. You get to lay around for a couple days, don’t have to do anything, you don’t have to buy anything, no exchanging of gifts.

What’s your favorite season?Fall, it’s pretty everywhere. Least favorite is winter, I’m not a big fan of cold.

If you could describe yourself as

an animal, what would it be?I don’t know, maybe a snake. I’m not really

cuddly.

If you could describe yourself as

car, what would it be?

Some sort of Toyota or a Honda, nothing

fancy, pretty dependable.

Words from the

WiseWant advice on how to survive dental school? Why not go straight to those who have been there, done that, and learned the

tricks of the trade!

THE DS1’S ARE GETTING READY TO TAKE THEIR FIRST MAJOR WEEK OF FINAL EXAMS IN THEIR DENTAL SCHOOL CAREER. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE ON HOW TO SURVIVE UNTIL WINTER BREAK?

“Take care of yourself! Eat good food, take your vitamins, get some sleep.

Then buckle down and dedicate yourself to one week of good studying

and it will pay off!” (Kayla Muszynski,

DS2)

“Well, my first bit of advice would be to start studying around a week and a

half ago. Aside from that, the married

students could look into having the in-laws fly out so their spouses won't be

so lonely, and also they might want to take up a crack habit.” (Chris Goelz,

DS2)

“Be glad you're not a second

year.” (Daryn Lu, DS2)

“Just take one day at a time! If you feel pressed for time, at least make sure you focus on what your professors go over in the review sessions.” (Diane Vincent, DS2)
