REMOVAL OF THE TRANSIT SCREWS

The cassette compartment is secured with three transitscrews to prevent it from sliding out while the unit is beingtransported.Before operating the unit, be sure to remove the transitsclews, using a screwdriver. Store the screws in the screwholes at the rear, and put them back in the original positions,when transporting the unit.

PRECAUTIONS

On salety

. Before operating, check that the operating power voltageand f requency of the unit are identical with those of yourlocal power supply.

. Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplugthe unit and have it checked by qualif ied personnel beforeoperating it any f urther.

. One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the purpose

of safety and will f it into the power outlet only one way. lfyou are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contactyour dealer.

. Unplug the unit from the walloutlet if it is not to be used foran extended period of time. To disconnect the cord, pull itout by the plug. Never pull the cord itself.

On installation

. Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat build-up.

. Do not place the unit on surfaces (rugs, blankets, etc.) ornear materials (curtains, draperies) that may block theventilation slots.

. Do not install the unit near heat sources such as radiators orair ducts or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessivedust, mechanical vibration or shock.

. The unit is designed for operation in a horizontal position.

Do not install it in an inclined position.. Keep the unit and cassette tapes away from equipment with

strong magnets, as for example a microwave oven or a largeloudspeaker.

. Do not place any heavy object on the unit.

On operation

. When the unit is not in use, turn off the power to conserveenergy and to extend its useful life.

. Remove and store video cassettes after recording orplayback.

. Store the cassettes in their cases and keep them in an

upright position to prevent intrusion of dust and unevenwinding.

On cleaning

Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft dry cloth, ora soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution.Do not use any type of solvent, such as alcohol or benzinewhich might damage the f inish.

On rcpacking

Do not throw away the carton and packing materials.They make an ideal container in which to transport the unit.When shipping the unit to another location, repack it asillustrated on the carton.

WHAT IS BETA HI.FI RECORDING?

ln conventional recording, audio signals are recorded onthe audio track and video signals on the video track. ln Betahi-fi recording, audio signals are recorded on the video tracktogether with the video signals using 2 rotary video heads.The Beta hi{i audio signals are f requency'modulated andrecorded on 2 channels, so that you can record a stereoprogram with sound quality far superior to that of theconventional audio recordi ng.

HANDLING THE VIDEO CASSETTES

Safety tabThe safety tab on the rear of the cassette should not beremoved lor recording. When a new recording is made on apre-recorded cassette, the previous recording will be erasedautomatically.To avoid erasing a recording, break off the safety tab using ascrewdriver or similar object.lf you cover the opening with a piece of plastic tape, wherethe safety tab has been removed, you can re-record on thecassette.

lf you activate O RECORD or TIMER REC when the insertedcassette has its safety tab removed, the cassette will beautomatical ly ejected.

Recording time availabb in each modeBy selecting the recording speed, IBIs l"BIIorJEl[, with theREC MODE button, you can decide the recording time.

The playback speed is automatically set.

4 Press OPEN/CLOSE.The cassette compartment slides in.

. ln place of step 4, you may press any of the tape transportbuttons. The cassette compartment slides in and therecorder directly goes into the selected tape operationmode.

. The power can be automatically turned on without pressingPOWER when A EJECT is pressed.

Notes on the cassette compartment. Be careful not to trap your hand between the cassette

compartment and the cabinet when the compartment ismoving. lf you should do so, the cassette compartment willautomatically stop and move in the opposite direction inseveral seconds.

. Do nol inserl anything other than a cassette inside thecassette holder and compartment.

. Do not push down on the cassette holder forcibly when it israised. lf excessive force is applied, the protective device isactivated to stop the cassette compartment movement andrecorder operation. ln this case, press OPEN/CLOSE.

. Frequent moving of the cassette compartment duringrecording is not recommended, since this may affect therecording.

To eject the cassettePress A EJECT. The cassette compartment slides out and

the cassette holder is raised. Take out the cassette by hand.

Notes. The A EJ ECT button f unctions even if the recorder is turned

off..The A EJECT button does not function during recording.

To open/close the cassette compartmentPress OPEN/CLOSE. The cassette compartment slides outwhether the tape is running or not. This allows check of theremaining tape amount.

To stop recording, press I STOP.When the tape reaches its end, it will be rewound to thebeginning.

To eject the cassette, press I EJECT.

To tum oll the power, press POWER.lf the cassette compartment is open, it will be closedautomatically and then the power will be turned off.

To stop the tape momentarilyPress ll PAUSE. The TV program can still be seen on the TV,

but the picture will not be recorded.To resume recording, press ll PAUSE again.To protect the video heads and the tape, the pause mode willbe automatically released after about 8 minutes andrecording will stop.

ln case you want to record a tape which is to be playedback on another recorder from the very beginning ol thetape, run the tape for about 15 seconds before startingrecording. Otherwise you may miss the starting pointduring playback on the other machine.

NOTE

SUPER BETA SWITCHFor recordingr Set to ON to make high picture quality recordings.r Set to OFF if you intend to play back the tape on a non-

SuperBetaVCR. A tape recorded with the SUPER BETAswitch set to ON (inJBII/J!lllmode) may cause someover-modulation noise when played back on a non-SuperBeta VCR.

r[!ls recording produces a high quality picture as inSuperBeta recording regardless of the SUPER BETAswitch position. AJBIs-recorded tape may not be playedback on a non-SuperBeta VCR with a JBI playbackf unction.

For playbackr Normally set to the position in which the tape was

recorded.. Set to ON if the tape was recorded in theJBIs mode.. Set to OFF if the tape was recorded in the [I]I mode, or if

the tape was recorded on a non-SuperBeta VCR.

TO START RECORDING FROM A PARTICULARPOINT

You can decide the starting point for recording whilewatching the picture.1 Locate the point where you wish to start recording on the

tape by playing back the tape or using the Betascan or theBeta SkipScan f unction.

2 Press ll PAUSE to stop the tape where you wish to startrecording.

3 Press O RECORD. The recorderwillenter recording pausemode.

4 Press ll PAUSE at the desired point to release the pausemode. Recording will begin.

. Make sure AUTO STEREO in the tuning compartment is setto ON.

. The recording procedure is the same as usual.

To record a stereo broadcastSet BETA Hl-Fl to ON. When the STEREO indicator lights up,a stereo broadcast is being received.

To record a SAP (Second Audio Program) broadcastSet NORMAL AUDIO to SAP. The SAP indicator will light up.lf recording is made when there is a SAP broadcast, the SAPsound will be recorded on the conventional audio track whilethe MAIN sound is recorded on the video track in Beta hi{i.To listen to the SAP sound, set AUDIO MONITORH l-Fl/NORMAL to NORMAL.

To record a MAIN broadcast onlySet NORMALAUDIO to MAIN. The MAIN sound will berecorded on the video track and the conventional audio track.

NoteWhen a SAP sound is not to be recorded, be sure to setNORMAL AUDIO to MAIN. lf it is set to SAP and there is noSAP broadcast, no sound is recorded on the conventionalaudio track.

TO VIEW ONE TV PROGRAM WHILE RECORDINGANOTHER

Press TVA/TR so that the WR indicator disappears from thedisplay window. Select the channel you want to view on thery.

ln the years to come, an increasing number of programswill be broadcasted in stereo. Called Multichannel TVSound or MTS, the new technology will greatly enhance TVviewing by bringing you programs with high fidelity stereosound.MTS also provides for an extra channel called the SecondAudio Program or SAP which broadcasters can use totransmit a second language for bilingual transmissions orany other sound track.

Turn on the power.

Turn on the TV and select the channel for the recorder.

Press ) PLAY.

. To change to channel 3 or 2 on your TV from the channel onwhich you have been viewing something from the videorecorder, be sure to press TVA/TR first and then change tochannel 3 or 2 on your W, lf TVruTR is pressed after channel3 or 2 is set on your W, you might not get a picture. ln thiscase, change your TV channel to another channel and thencome back to channel 3 or 2.

USE OF THE TAPE COUNTER

The tape counter indicates the approximate running time ofthe tape and the relative position of programs on the tape.

TO INDEX THE TAPE CONTENTS

Before starting recording or playback, press COUNTERRESET to set the counter to "0u00la00s". By noting thecounter reading at the desired point, you can easily find thatpoint later by referring to the counter. Use the label on thecassette to list the programs and their counter readings.

Notes. The counter reading is automatically reset to zero wfien a

cassette is newly inserted.. The counter reading will be retained in the memory even

after the power is turned off, as long as the cassefie is inthe cassette compartment.
