Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would
Not Take The Garbage Out
Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout would not take
the garbage out!
She'd scour the pots and scrape the pans,Candy the yams and spice the hams,
And though her daddy would scream and
shout,She simply would not take the garbage
out.

And so it piled up to the ceilings:
Coffee grounds, potato peelings,
Brown bananas, rotten peas,
Chunks of sour cottage cheese.It filled the can, it covered the floor,
It cracked the window and blocked the
door

The garbage rolled on down the hall,It raised the roof, it broke the wall...
Greasy napkins, cookie crumbs,Globs of gooey bubble gum,Cellophane from green baloney,Rubbery blubbery macaroni,
Peanut butter, caked and dry,Curdled milk and crusts of pie,Moldy melons, dried-up mustard,
Eggshells mixed with lemon custard,Cold french fries and rancid meat,Yellow lumps of Cream of Wheat.
At last the garbage reached so high

At last the garbage reached so highThat finally it touched the sky.
And all the neighbors moved away,And none of her friends would come to play.And finally Sarah Cynthia Stout said,"OK, I'll take the garbage out!"But then, of course, it was too late...The garbage reached across the state,
From New York to the Golden Gate.And there, in the garbage she did hate,Poor Sarah met an awful fate,That I cannot right now relate
Because the hour is much too late.But children, remember Sarah Stout
And always take the garbage out!

A coat of the claret velvet, and breechesof brown doe-skin;

They said no word to the landlord, they
drank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and
bound her to the foot of her narrow bed;Two of them knelt at her casement, with

And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through her

The tip of one finger touched it. She strove no more for the

She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight;
Blank and bare in the moonlight;
And the blood of her veins, in the moonlight, throbbed to her
love's refrain.

Shattered her breast in the moonlight and

Back, he spurred like a madman,
shouting a curse to the sky,With the white road smoking behind
him and his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were his spurs in the golden
noon; wine-red was his velvet coat,When they shot him down on the
highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the
highway, with the bunch of lace at his
throat.

And still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is inthe trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy
seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purplemoor,
A highwayman comes riding--
Riding--riding--
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

Over the cobbles he clatters and
clangs in the dark inn-yard;He taps with his whip on the
shutters, but all is locked and
barred;
He whistles a tune to the window,
and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed
daughter,
Bess, the landlord's daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into herlong black hair.

Another Narrative Poem
Example: The Charge of the Light Brigade(featured in the movie The Blind Side)
Half a league, half a league,Half a league onward,
All in the valley of DeathRode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!Charge for the guns' he said:Into the valley of DeathRode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!'Was there a man dismay'd?Not tho' the soldiers knewSome one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,Theirs not to reason why,Theirs but to do and die:Into the valley of DeathRode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,Cannon in front of themVolley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,Boldly they rode and well,Into the jaws of Death,Into the mouth of HellRode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,Flash'd as they turned in airSabring the gunners there,Charging an army whileAll the world wonder'd:Plunged in the battery-smokeRight thro' the line they broke;Cossack and RussianReel'd from the sabre-strokeShatter'd and sunder'd.Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.Cannon to right of them,Cannon to left of them,Cannon behind themVolley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,While horse and hero fell,They that had fought so wellCame thro' the jaws of Death,Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade?O the wild charge they made!All the world wonder'd.Honour the charge they made!Honour the Light Brigade,Noble six hundred!

Ballad Poetry
A ballad is a story poem with a strong rhyme and rhythm.Ballads are traditionally songs, or at least song-like. Theclassic ballad stanza has 4 lines, with the linesalternating between eight syllables and six syllables.
In each line, every other syllable is emphasized,creating that sing-song da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM rhythm that is so catchy. The second and fourthlines rhyme, but the first and third don't have to. Theresulting stanza could be like this one from the

Casey at the Bat
From the benches, black with people, there arose a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on some stern and distant shore."Kill him! Kill the umpire!" shouted someone in the stand,
And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

What my lips have kissed, and
where, and why...
What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,I have forgotten, and what arms have lainUnder my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sighUpon the glass and listen for reply;
And in my heart there stirs a quiet painFor unremembered lads that not againWill turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands a lonely tree,Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet know its boughs more silent than before:
I cannot say what loves have come and gone;I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.

Sonnet 116
Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments. Love is not loveWhich alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
