I am very much looking forward to welcoming you to Clarion’s

ground-breaking UDT Asia Conference, which will bring

together world-class expertise and opinion from military

practitioners, innovative technology leaders and major

industrial and service support partners. I expect signifi cant

levels of interest in a conference that should be notable for its

thought leadership and high level of technological insight.

Within the context of a progressive ‘scramble for the sea’

and its resources, as well as widespread jurisdictional

competition, the conference will take as its theme the steady

growth in investment across Asia in the military use and

wider exploitation of the underwater environment. It will

highlight the proliferation of submarines of all types and their

increasing sophistication and power, especially in the hands

of major regional powers and those seeking to build powerful

sea denial capabilities.

The conference will also explore the increasing use of mini-

submarines and other manned and unmanned underwater

vehicles, by both state and irregular players, with regard to

both littoral and deep water activities, and the extensive use of

‘narco-subs’ and submersibles for covert, illicit penetration of

maritime borders.

In addition, we will discuss and demonstrate leading-edge

ideas, training solutions and novel technologies that can

deal with the full range of nuclear, conventional and mini-

submarine threats. Contributions from senior maritime

professionals, academics and representatives of the leading

Defence and Security companies will provide fresh thinking

about the problems and solutions associated with emerging

risks and offer the opportunity to explore new approaches to

the complex underwater environment.

I anticipate a lively debate and an excellent opportunity to

share thoughts with both old and new friends when we meet

in late November. I look forward to seeing everyone.

Clarion Events

There are many challenges facing the acquisition of

submarine and undersea technologies for Asian navies.

Throughout the region, different navies weigh options

to overcome issues such as how to acquire affordable

submarine and UUV capabilities, the prioritisation of

undersea technologies and the ability to develop an

indigenous UUV capability.

UDT Asia brings together the key personnel from the naval,

defence industry and academic sector. These speakers

and attendees are responsible for the identifi cation,

specifi cation, procurement and deployment of submarines,

UUVs, C4ISR systems, acoustics, sonar and radar for naval

undersea application. There will be briefi ngs from around

the region and the rest of the world, on how navies select

new platforms and what kind of new technologies they are

planning to implement.

Over the course of the conference, you will be engaged with

military and industry personnel covering key developments

on effective strategies to ensure correct deployment of

naval undersea systems. UDT Asia will focus on providing

the critical information your program needs to plan

an effective capability roadmap. Join us for the most

comprehensive naval undersea event in Asia.

I look forward to welcoming you in Singapore!
