“The Buzz” page 1 PARENTS, FACULTY, AND STUDENTS Life in the hive has been extremely busy (as usual). We have been registering our seniors to take the ACT exam during the school day on September 29th in the historical building. This should make the exam more accessible to our students with transportation issues. We also welcomed parents to our annual Back to School Night on Thursday, September 10th. Parents were given a taste of what it’s really like to be a Booker T. Washington student by following their student’s schedule for the evening complete with five minute passing periods and hall sweeps. Luckily, no one was given detention! Please remember to attend Parent/Teacher conferences October 12th and 13th, to continue the conversations started on Back to School Night going. We would like to congratulate Booker T. Washington was honored to receive a visit from Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. Her visit was electrifying. Not only did she take questions from the students, she posed for pictures throughout the field house, sitting with almost every student by group during her two-hour presentation. Moreover, her personal story, of overcoming childhood diabetes and societal prejudice to become one of the first Puerto Ricans to attend Princeton and Yale, and then to become a member of our highest court, was an inspiration to all. We were not allowed to admit the press to the session, but a student in the photography club, Addy Sanchez, followed her with a camera. We selected 28 pictures from the more than 600 pictures she took for enlargement and display. These pictures where hung throughout the school building in time for Back to School Night. Parents and students are welcome to walk around and find the pictures of Justice Sotomayor among the Hornets. Our hope is that the pictures will do more than commemorate a special day for the Hive. They can be used to start a conversation about diversity, adversity, aspiration and achievement. We would like to see Sotomayor’s message repeated throughout the year, so that our next generation of achievers can learn from her example. Parents are encouraged to speak to their children about how they can use their education and the time they are given at Booker T., to build on their dreams and overcome any obstacle. Parents who did not make it to Back-to-School Night are encouraged to drop by and look for the faces of their children in the crowd. Let’s Go Hornets! October 2015

BTW ENGLISH TEACHERS STUDY GENOCIDE ON TWO CONTINENTS A casual conversation between BTW English teachers, Kate Remington and Meredith Deaton, developed into a Fund for

Teachers professional development grant sponsoring transcontinental travel in order to explore the ways in which different cultures view, memorialize, and attempt to reconcile the atrocities of prejudice and mass genocide. Both Ms. Deaton and Ms. Remington had read Philip Gourevitch’s award winning account of the Rwandan genocide, We Wish to Inform You that Tomorrow We Will be Killed with Our Families. As they discussed their shared interests in the causes of racial hatred, its manifestation in mass persecution, and ways to educate students about the genesis and lasting aftermath of genocide, they decided they needed a more in-depth understanding of these issues in order to find ways to help their students truly comprehend these events. Travelling to Rwanda emerged as a focal point for their professional development because of the well-documented genocide that occurred there in the 1990’s. As a contrast, they chose to visit Holocaust museums and memorials in Germany because of students’ familiarity with the genocide of World War II and the ease of travelling to multiple sites in close proximity.

Within Germany their study centered upon how Germany memorialized the Holocaust. Sachsenhausen, the first architecturally planned concentration camp that was built as a work camp in 1936, was a focal point of their research. Both Ms. Remington and Ms. Deaton were impressed by the fact that what ended up being a mass extermination program targeting Jewish people initially began as confinement camp for individuals politically opposing Hitler’s government. The camp then evolved into a “work program” that was presented as a way to make all citizens contribute to the society by targeting groups that were labeled as not doing their fair share of the work such as drug addicts, gay males, political dissidents, handicapped individuals, gypsies, and members of Jehovah’s Witness. In Rwanda it was possible to view the impact of genocide on a truly personal

level because of the country’s much more recent experience with genocide. In contrast to Germany’s more formal memorials to the Holocaust that were reconstructed or preserved long after the war, the sites commemorating the Rwandan genocide are graphically and meticulously maintained in their original state. The Rwandan people, worried about the possibility of Holocaust deniers trying to gloss over the atrocities, intentionally left locations of mass murder as they were discovered with piles of victim’s clothing, blood on the walls, and even blood and remains on the altar cloths of churches where murders took place. Moreover, since many Rwandans are still searching for lost relatives, these sites are archives where individuals can sort through the discarded clothes and papers for clues to the fate of their relatives and friends. After the conflict ended, people who had not participated in the genocide or had attempted to protect those who were victimized were elected to positions of societal authority. Leaders of the genocide were turned over to the International Tribunal or tried through

Sculptural memorial for the victims at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.

Menashe Kadishman's installation at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, entitled Shalekhet (Fallen Leaves). The artwork consists of over 10,000 open-mouthed faces roughly hewn

from circular iron plates.

the justice system. Individuals who had been involved but were not in charge of the persecution were obliged to admit their role in the genocide and then work to rebuild the infrastructure of the society by performing extended community service in order to provide restorative justice. As a consequence of this program, Rwanda has a modern electrical system as well as superior roadways and public structures. Rwandan individuals were eager to talk to Ms. Remington and Ms. Deaton and to share their experiences with them while making sure that the teachers were able to visit all of the sites that they needed to see in order to help them understand the Rwandan genocide. One of their most significant experiences was by chance when their guide found out that they were interested in the genocide and took them to meet his 95 year-old grandmother. She related her first-hand experiences of living through the genocide to them. In spite of her husband and four children being murdered during the conflict, she had been able to move on with her life and to find meaning in the new society that was formed. Ms. Deaton summarized their experiences in Rwanda, stating, “The biggest lesson for me was that you cannot move forward from societal injustice without some sort of reconciliation. Our society could learn a lot from the Rwandans healing process and their attempt to hold people accountable.” Ms. Deaton and Ms. Remington view these personal narratives as essential in presenting persecution and genocide to their students in a more comprehensible and experiential way. Instead of solely teaching about abstract historical events, they will be able to discuss real people’s stories, therefore making the issue more personal and immediate. Both teachers plan to apply their knowledge and experience within their classroom curriculum in order to encourage students to think about unjust situations that arise in all societies, to address moral dilemmas inherent in prejudice and racism, to encourage exploration of what choices we as individuals make, and to consider the consequences that follow our actions.

Ms. Deaton demonstrates the miraculous cross-cultural unifier—taking a selfie.

COLLEGE BOARD NAMES EIGHT BTW SENIORS AS NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALIST SCHOLARS AND ONE SENIOR AS A NATIONAL HISPANIC RECOGNITION STUDENT Each year approximately 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored through the National Merit Scholarship Program, but only some 16,000 of them are named Semifinalists. Students qualify as Semifinalists based on their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT and are the only program participants who have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. Finalists are then determined based on application, high school academic record, and SAT scores consistent with PSAT performance. About 7,600 outstanding Finalists will be chosen as Merit Scholarship winners in the 2015 competition. Booker T. Washington is proud to announce that the College Board designated the following 8 BTW students as National Merit Semi-Finalists this year: Mohamed Aly, Micah Cash, Nathan Levit, Mandy Li, Emma Robson, Veronica Sherman, Dana Sous, and Samuel Taylor. The College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognized William Finch. Every year, the NHRP recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the SAT test. Although it is not a scholarship, the College Board’s NHRP program is an academic honor that can be included on college applications to identify academically exceptional Hispanic/Latino students. Congratulations to all of you! BTW MODEL UNITED NATIONS SET TO HAVE RECORD YEAR The Booker T. Washington Model UN program is off to a great start, with record attendance at its meetings - Thursday mornings at 8:00 in room 218. Letter from the PTSA President Irene Drew Greetings Hornet Parents! As the PTSA president, I would like to welcome back returning students and families! I also extend a very heartfelt welcome to our new BTWHS families and staff members! To all of you, I look forward to making 2015-2016 a fun and productive year.

The purpose of the PSTA first and foremost is to support our students. In addition, it supports the faculty, staff, parents, and the local community. “Every Child-One Voice” is the National PTA motto, and the PTA is one of the strongest voices in the educational process that directly supports our children and school. This year will be no different. Booker T Washington High School has a P-T-S-A which means we WANT to involve our students in the active process of the association – valid input and feedback to what affects them (as well as teachers & parents.) Your PSTA has been focused on preparing an enhanced educational environment for all of our students. An effective and successful PSTA requires support and involvement of the parents of our students. It is vital. Your first opportunity to show support is to become a member of the Booker T. Washington PTSA. We encourage each of you to show your commitment by joining. Money raised through PTSA membership and fundraisers helps to fund grants for the various student organizations including monies for equipment, trips, supplies and much, much more. Over the years, the PTSA has provided learning opportunities and social activities that may have otherwise been unavailable to our students. The second way to show your support will be to participate in the numerous exciting events and programs that we have planned throughout the year. You may choose to be a committee chair, committee member, or a volunteer. Whatever level of participation you choose, your time and involvement will be greatly appreciated. Many parents feel that they cannot participate in the PTSA because they cannot attend meetings or be at school during the day. Whether you have 30 minutes or a couple of hours in or outside of school hours, your ideas, your time, and your talents are truly needed. There are endless possibilities in ways you can help. Research shows that students whose parents are involved in their education have better grades and fewer discipline problems. We promise that the time you give to the PTSA and the school will be worth your while—and fun! Please consider volunteering, it really does make a difference in the lives of all our children! Please contact me anytime about PTSA events and activities. I am here to assist you in any way that I can. I hold this opportunity in high regard, and I look forward to meeting and working with each of you!

With appreciation, Irene Drew BTW PTSA President, 2015-2016 [email protected] Facebook: Hornets PTSA

TOGETHER WITH THE BTW COUNSELING OFFICE BTW’s PTSA has traditionally sponsored an October Road Map to College – an overview of various steps toward sending students to college. This year we will not offer the Road Map to College but instead choose to recognize and support the tools and in-depth programming offered by our own counseling office team. Here is a Shout Out to many of the great offerings that students and their families can consider:

• Check out the Senior Plan Book by going to the BTW home page under the drop down menu for “Student”, then click on “Class of 2016.” Counselors have reviewed the information in this book with current seniors, but younger students are welcome to refer to it to see what might be needed for their senior year.

• Regularly review the College Visits list and Hornet email for opportunities to learn more about a college or university from visiting admissions representatives.

• Visit the newly redesigned foyer of the counseling office and explore information on colleges, scholarship opportunities and Test Prep Resources.

• Talk to your students about the Buzzness activity period. BTW counseling offers programs geared toward preparing for college during Buzzness. Programs include OK Promise, NCAA eligibility and preparation, writing essays for college applications, FAFSA, the college admissions process, some “Stress Buster” weeks, and other activities in cooperation with our school social worker, Aisha Bereal.

• Senior parents: look forward to an in-depth FAFSA evening on January 12th during which parents are guided through the FAFSA questions with an expert.

• Most importantly, take some time to get to know your student’s counselor. Each BTW counselor is well versed in the college preparation and admission process. Even if your student comes up with a question that has never been asked, the counseling office will work with your student to identify appropriate resources and find the answer to the question.

Please take a moment to thank a counselor for their ongoing support

for our students and their families.

BTW FOUNDATION BBB Exceeds Fundraising Goal -- Thank you!

Thanks to the generosity of our BTW family, Booker T, Books & BBQ generated enough money to fund all of the book requests from our teachers! The money raised at BBB by the Foundation purchased approximately 180 books -- Latin dictionaries and grammar books, magazines for social studies, workbooks for German, and plays for English classes. We greatly appreciate the support of: • Corporate sponsors who supplied food and water • Lexus of Tulsa for the much needed bottled water • Dedicated parent and community volunteers • Students organizations of Men of Power, NHS, Women of Power and Key Club • School personnel who went out of their way to make the afternoon's fun

go smoothly • Biggn's BBQ for making a delicious meal • The Funky D's for the always awesome entertainment • DJ Spencer (once a Hornet, always a Hornet!) • Football game attendees who kindly dipped into their pockets at half-time • Dr. Marshall and Ms. Coleman for their unending support. The family dinner, just prior to the first Hornet home football win, was a great success. Thank you for helping the Foundation with its mission of enhancing all aspects of academic endeavors for our students, faculty, and administration.
