From the Head of Junior School Welcome Back to Term 3 I would like to welcome everyone back to Junior School and Term 3 following the mid-year break. Hopefully many of our families had an opportunity to spend some extra time together. In talking to many of the boys this week I know that quite a few have had very exciting holidays and have enjoyed travelling to some interesting and diverse places around the world. I took the opportunity to travel as well and spent almost two weeks travelling around Sri Lanka. I found it to be a wonderful country to visit with a diverse landscape, wildlife, culture and a fascinating history. I strongly believe that having the opportunity to travel and visit other cultures is a really valuable experience and I know the boys I speak to gain a great deal from their travels. Not all of our boys left Melbourne and I have also enjoyed hearing how they spent their holidays and the interesting activities and pastimes they pursued during the break. It was a bit challenging for us all, I am sure, to get up out of bed for the first day of school, particularly when the weather has been so cold and wet this week. I would like to think, however, that all of the boys were excited to be back at school and catching up with their mates once again. I look forward to another very successful term and to the annual Family Day event that will take place towards the end of this term on Saturday 12 September. Please make sure you mark this important event in your diaries so that all boys are able to participate in the events on this most important day. State Schools Cross Country Event On Thursday we had several boys competing at the State Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park. Bailey Dann (6M), William Chambers (5C), Harrison Winneke (4I) and Fred Leeton (5C) had all qualified for the State Championships by coming in the top 12 at the regional event late in Term 3. A report of the boys’ efforts is in the PE and Sport section of the newsletter. Mid-Year Reports During the term break you should have received your son’s mid-year report in the mail. Our teachers put a great deal of time and effort into preparing these reports and we aim to ensure they are an accurate and detailed representation of your son’s progress to this point in time. Every effort is made to ensure they are error free before they are mailed out but I am aware that on rare occasions a report will arrive home with a typo or other mistake that had not been picked up. If this is the case please let us know so that it can be rectified. If, for some reason, you have not received your son’s report then please contact the Junior School office so that a copy can be arranged for you. I would hope that there are no surprises in the reports and the information shared with you by the teachers reflects what you have already been made aware of in relation to your son’s progress at school. If you do have any concerns in this area I would urge you to make contact with the particular teacher to discuss these. An opportunity for all parents to meet with their son’s teachers will be provided during our Term 3 Parent/Teacher Interviews, which will take place during the final two weeks of this term. Details of these interviews will be shared with parents closer to the time. 17 July 2015

Welcome Back to Term 3

I would like to welcome everyone back to Junior School and Term 3 following the mid-year break. Hopefully many of

our families had an opportunity to spend some extra time together. In talking to many of the boys this week I know that

quite a few have had very exciting holidays and have enjoyed travelling to some interesting and diverse places around the

world. I took the opportunity to travel as well and spent almost two weeks travelling around Sri Lanka. I found it to be a

wonderful country to visit with a diverse landscape, wildlife, culture and a fascinating history. I strongly believe that

a great deal from their travels. Not all of our boys left Melbourne and I have also enjoyed hearing how they spent their

has been so cold and wet this week. I would like to think, however, that all of the boys were excited to be back at school

and catching up with their mates once again.

I look forward to another very successful term and to the annual Family Day event that will take place towards the end of

this term on Saturday 12 September. Please make sure you mark this important event in your diaries so that all boys are

able to participate in the events on this most important day.

Oliver! Production

Over the past month or so a number of our Junior School boys have been busy auditioning for parts in OSMaD’s

production of Oliver!, the musical based on the story of Oliver Twist. OSMaD is the Old Scotch Music and Drama club

and each year they produce a musical performed here at Scotch. I am delighted to inform our Junior School community

that three Junior School boys have been chosen for parts in this year’s performance. Seba Negri (5M) and Charles

Padgham (5D) have been cast as members of the chorus and Tom Law (6C) has been chosen to play the lead role of

Oliver. I congratulate each of these boys on their selections and look forward to attending one of the performances later in

the year.

Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science

Over the term break a great deal of activity has taken place around our new Science centre. If you haven’t been down to

the end of Morrison Street in recent times then I am sure you will be quite surprised to see that building works are now up

to the third level and the size of the building is becoming much more apparent. It is quite amazing to see just how fast this

development is progressing. Equally as impressive is the generosity of our community in relation to raising the funds

required for the project. Contained in this edition of Primary Matters is a flyer updating everyone on the progress and

where the capital campaign has reached. I encourage everyone to read it as it is makes for a very good story.

The Year 1 Reading Program

The Year 1 Reading Program has had some minor modifications made for Semester Two.

All boys will still be involved in the program in a similar way. Education Support strongly supports this program and as

such, all Education Support teachers are made available at this time.

Many boys will leave the classroom to move to another area with their reading teacher. Although this teacher may be a

member of the Education Support team, it does not necessarily mean that the boy is at risk or requires support in some

way. For many, this will just be part of the school’s reading program.

Any boy who is considered at risk of not meeting national benchmarks and requiring some form of consolidation will

receive a letter from Education Support to inform the parents.

Enrichment also comes under the umbrella of Education Support. If a student is selected to participate in an enrichment

program at this time, similarly, a letter will be sent to inform the parents.

Page 3: son’s progress to this point in time. Every effort is made ...€¦ · Seba Negri (5M) and Charles Padgham (5D) have been cast as members of the chorus and Tom Law (6C) has been

Any decision to place a student into an Education Support program, whether consolidation or enrichment, is carefully

made after consultation with class teachers, examination of formal and informal assessment results and consideration of

other factors that are relevant for each individual. The final decision for inclusion into any Education Support Junior

Primary program will be an executive decision made by the Director of Education Support and the Director of Junior

Primary.

Bounce Back – Relationships

All children want close relationships with friends and classmates at school. These important relationships help them to

cope better with life’s occasional hard times. Children who have good social skills are more likely to achieve more at

school and be more successful in their future careers, and are less likely to get into trouble, or be attracted to anti-social

peer groups. There is a ‘luck’ factor with regards to the people they will meet as potential friends but it will be their social

skills that make the difference in developing and maintaining friendships.

During Term 3 your son will be learning about Relationships through unpacking the following topics:

Prep

Feeling shy and lonely Getting to know others

What do children like about others? It’s important to listen well when others talk

Being noticed

Years 1 and 2

Friendship and loyalty How to be a thoughtful friend

Being separated from a friend Good and bad ways to disagree

Apologising and being friends again

Years 3 and 4

Getting to know each other and getting along Having an interesting conversation

Popularity Friendship

Dealing with rejection Disagreements

Saying sorry and building bridges

Year 5

Getting along with others Listening and conversation skills

Shyness and feeling self-conscious Friendship

Friendship problems Managing disagreements

Year 6

Getting along with others Listening and conversation skills

Popularity Shyness and feeling self-conscious

Friendship Friendship problems

Managing disagreements Leadership and love

All music lessons and ensemble rehearsals resumed with great gusto this week. We even enjoyed a performance by the

Junior School Big Band, conducted by Head of Brass Mr Roger Schmidli, in Thursday's assembly in the Ian Roach Hall.

This fabulous ensemble reprised their recent crowd pleasers from last term's Years 5 and 6 Concert.

Please note that Ms Julia Piggin is on leave until Monday 6 August. Her classes are enjoying lessons with some fabulous

music staff including Ms Rebecca Rouse, Ms Sophie Grattan Smith and Ms Elaine Chin.

Please note the following musical dates this term. More information regarding these events will be issued by letter and

through this newsletter.

Tuesday 4 August Scotch College Bands' Concert at 7.45pm in the Ian Roach Hall, compulsory for

Junior School Years 5 and 6 Concert Band.

Grammar School, at Strathcona.

Thursday 13 August Scotch College Strings' Concert at 7.00pm in the Ian Roach Hall, compulsory for

Junior School Year 3 to 6 String students.

Years 5 and 6 Junior School Choir.

Friday 21 August Year 4 Chamber Choir to attend Kodály Music Education Institute of Australia

Junior Choral Festival, Caulfield Grammar (Wheelers Hill campus).

Friday 28 August Years 3 and 4 Concert at 1.30pm in the Ian Roach Hall, featuring all Year 3 and

4 boys.

Wednesday 16 September Year 2 String Concert at 2.00pm in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre.

Smith, Ian Munro, Andrew Bain) at 7.45pm in the Roach Hall. Tickets available

through the Scotch College website.

On Wednesday 9 September, the Senior School's premier musical performance, the Foundation Day Concert, will be held

in Hamer Hall. If you are interested in what the Senior School Music Department holds for your son, I highly recommend

attending this concert. Bookings open on Monday 3 August, through the Arts Centre.

Interview with Director of Music, Mr John Ferguson

by Ned Sutherland (3T)

Q. What is your role at Scotch College and how long have you been here?

A. I have been at Scotch College for twenty five years (since 1990) and I am the Director of

Music.

Q. What benefits do you see for Junior School boys participating in the Scotch College Music

program?

A. It develops a sense of beauty and style. It is good for your brain and research has shown

that those who study music perform better in other areas of education, such as numeracy and literacy and

NAPLAN testing. Learning music is also good for aesthetics.

Q. Why is music important to you?

A. We can't live without music and if I didn't do music, I would have to get a real job!

PE and Sport

Physical Education

Family Day preparations began for all Years 2 – 6 boys this week. Boys learned the techniques of Shot Put amidst the

challenges of cold and wet weather. Talk to your boys about what the following means:

1. Clean palm

2. Dirty neck and elbow up

3. Front arm up

4. Low to high and hips through with head up

There is also an instructional video on shot put on the Learning Management System (LMS) for Years 3 to 6 under

Phys Ed content. This can be accessed by logging onto the MY SCOTCH page.

The Prep boys have been preparing for their PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) to be held this term. Rope climbing to the

ceiling in the Junior School Gym has been a sight! Year 1 boys have worked hard indoors with agility and cardio games

in preparation for Family Day.

Year 5 and 6 boys trialled for Family Day sprints this week. All boys ran a couple of 100m times on McKendrick Oval, as

well as 200m times. These times will be used for heat assignments and relay teams at Family Day.

Year 3 and 4 boys will trial for the 100m and 200m on Wednesday 22 July and can wear their PE uniform to school for

the day.

Please make sure boys are dressed in correct sport uniform for these upcoming trials. Please remind your boys to dress for

the weather. Wearing a single polo shirt is not appropriate when outdoors for extended periods. Some boys have been

miserable this week outside for sport and PE!

Interschool Sport

Interschool Sport Training for Year 5 and 6 begins next week.

Term 3 sports are Hockey, Basketball, Soccer and Handball. There will be no Interschool games on Wednesday 22 July,

as the Year 3 and 4 boys will be trialling for Family Day.

Wednesday 29 July is the first day of competition with eight weeks of games for the term, concluding on Wednesday

16 September.

Term 3 Sport training, coaches and fixture information are attached.

Cross Country

Congratulations to the boys who competed yesterday in the

State Cross Country Championships. All boys performed

admirably and represented Scotch with great distinction.

Under 11 Boys Fred Leeton 10th

(field of 80+) Harrison Winneke 13th

William Chambers 30th

Bailey Dann competed in the Under 12 Boys event and

was in the leading group until he slipped and fell just before

the 1km mark. Bailey picked himself up and finished the

race in the middle of the field. A fantastic effort Bailey!

State Australian Rules Football

We wish Sam Darcy (6A) all the best as he represents Victoria at the National U12 Championships to be held in Geelong

from 18–25 July. Sam was one of 23 boys chosen from across the state to wear the Big V. Great effort Sam!

Squad Swimming and Diving

Squad trains on Monday and Friday mornings from 7.00am – 8.00am during Term 3. This opportunity is open to all

Years 5 and 6 boys and those Year 4 boys at a squad standard. Senior School coaches train the boys, alongside the senior

boys, in stroke technique and endurance. Please let me know if your son WILL NOT be continuing this term.

Diving will again be open to Junior School boys during Term 3 at the Scotch pool. Please watch this space for more

details.

great opportunity to pick up a beautiful family holiday for four at a resort that is getting a lot of great (independent!)

press. The auction is open to everyone with 100% of the proceeds to go back into supporting our club.

The package includes accommodation, lift passes, ski hire, group lessons and transfers to and from Big White
