In this interview with book publisher Candlewick Press , author Kate DiCamillo reveals the inspiration behind the novel for young readers that inspired this play.

Where did you get the idea for writing a book about a large china rabbit?

A friend gave me a very elegant rabbit “doll” (sorry, Edward) for Christmas a

couple of years ago. Not long after receiving the rabbit, I had this very clear image of him underwater, on the bottom of the sea, minus all of his finery, lost and alone.

Abilene’s grandmother, Pellegrina, is not happy with Edward. “You disappoint me,” she tells him. What does she expect of Edward?

Edward is, in many ways, Pellegrina’s creation, and because of that her expectations for him are huge. She perceives, quite clearly, that he has failed at the simple and impossible task he was created for: loving Abilene as she loves him.

Are there any other books that inspired you in the writing of this one?I wasn’t thinking particularly of other books when I was writing Edward, but

looking back, I can see that I was influenced by some pretty powerful stories: The Mouse and His Child, Pinocchio, Winnie-the-Pooh, Alice in Wonderland. I can see the influence of all of those masterpieces in my small story.

Did any of this book come from your own childhood?Everything that I write comes from my childhood in one way or another. I am

forever drawing on the sense of mystery and wonder and possibility that pervaded that time of my life.

What was a defining moment, good or bad, that shaped you as a child? My father leaving the family certainly shaped who I was and how I looked at

the world. By the same token, my father telling me fairy tales that he had made up shaped me profoundly, too. As did my mother reading to me.

Do you have any suggestions for engaging and motivating young readers? Do you have any advice for classroom teachers or parents?

The best thing I know to tell parents and teachers about motivating young readers is that reading should not be presented to them as a chore, a duty. It should, instead, be offered as a gift: Look, I will help you unwrap this miraculous present. I will show you how to use it for your own satisfaction and education and deep, intense pleasure. It distresses me that parents insist that their children read or make them read. I think the best way for children to treasure reading is for them to see the adults in their lives reading for their own pleasure.

VISIONWe’ll make a future rooted in our history of artistic achievement

and fiscal discipline. Our core values are these: excellence in the quality of our plays and programs; service to our community; depth and longevity in our relationships; ongoing engagement with our company, audiences, students, teachers, and funders; and dedication to arts education. They inspire and guide us as we aim to become a place where people of all ages and backgrounds enjoy a range of theatre experiences that begins with entertainment and invites deep learning. We seek to become essential to the civic and cultural life of the Philadelphia region and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

MISSIONPeople’s Light, a professional theatre in Chester County,

Pennsylvania, makes plays drawn from many sources to entertain, inspire, and engage our community. We extend our mission of making and experiencing theatre through arts education programs that excite curiosity about, and deepen understanding of, the world around us. These plays and programs bring people together and provide opportunities for reflection, discovery, and celebration.

ABOUT PEOPLE’S LIGHTFounded in 1974,

People’s Light serves asone of Pennsylvania’s largest professional non- profit theatres, known for our resident company of artists, eclectic mix of productions, and innovative work with young people. In our 8-9

play season, we present stories drawn from ancient times through tomorrow that have direct relevance to our communities and their concerns. In support of this range, we produce classics and contemporary plays, and commission and produce new work: of our 418 productions, over a third (164) have been world or regional premieres.

At People’s Light we enhance our stage work with a variety of Surround Activities that connect us with many Delaware Valley communities near our seven-acre Malvern campus. Arts Discovery extends our mission with school residencies, student matinees that bring youth from 21 high schools to People’s Light each year for free, and a broad array of theatre classes for grades K through 12. This suite of education programs inspires and informs our production work in a reciprocal dance of influence and support. New Play Frontiers explores our American identity by commissioning leading playwrights to create plays informed by meaningful stories of nearby populations, and simultaneously develops audiences with a stake in the work. Community Matters sparks dialogue about vital social issues with free staged readings and town hall-style discussions co-hosted by the Theatre and local service organizations.

People’s Light has always called Chester County home. In 1979 we moved to our current location in Malvern, which includes two black box theatres with 340 and 160 seats respectively; offices; scenic shops; rehearsal halls; classrooms; a restored 18th-century farmhouse to house guest artists; the Bistro restaurant; and the Farmhouse banquet and catering facility that can be rented for special events. The Theatre employs 100 full- and permanent-part-time artists and staff members, most of whom live within 15 miles of the campus, and almost 200 guest artists each season from Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C., and beyond. We operate with an annual budget of $6.2 million and serve 80,000 patrons, guests, students, and community members each year.
