Dear Friends,

2009 brought us opportunities and challenges that we never before had experienced and that we embraced with an optimistic and realistic response. Our commitment to serve the growing needs of our community was reinforced and strengthened every step of the way through 2009 as we witnessed the positive and heartwarming effects that our outreach accomplished.

We offered programs and assistance to any individual in need, whether through emotional, financial, or physical support. Our community, in turn, found deeper faith in our charitable work as witnessed by the increased number of donors and the amount raised. The result of these compassionate and generous gifts to Strong Kids, our financial assistance program, is highlighted in the following report. This report allows you to glimpse into the lives of those that have benefited from every dollar that was donated over the course of the year.

One of our primary focuses this past year has been on improving member engagement as we convey to our members the value of their involvement at the Somerset Hills YMCA. This has consequently led to exceptionally strong membership retention and member satisfaction.

Difficult but fiscally responsible decisions were made during last year’s poor economic climate to close YMCA operations at the Morris-Union Jointure Commission in Warren and in Bedminster/Far Hills. Our commitment, however, to these communities remains undaunted and sound. We continue to offer programs at alternate sites in these two areas and strive to identify more opportunities to serve the populations living in these communities.

At a time when many other organizations and services are pulling back, we are living our mission now more than ever. Our focus is on the basic needs of every individual in the community and how we can best serve them. We would like to thank you for your involvement, support and contributions because, with your collaboration, the Somerset Hills YMCA is building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

Sincerely,

Robert Raymar, Chairman of the Board

Robert J. Lomauro, President & CEO

A Letter From The Board

These days, finding time together as a family can be a challenge and often gets pushed down from the top of our list of priorities. The fast pace and pressure of our daily lives make setting aside family time all the more important; the Somerset Hills YMCA recognizes this by offering many healthy and fun programs and events to the community that engage all ages and interests. • Friday Family Nights at the Y have experienced steady growth as more and more families choose to eat a healthy dinner together and enjoy open swim time, the climbing wall, family movies, and other special activities. Twenty-eight family nights were held over the course of 2009 attracting a total of 630 families. • America On The Move week, a national initiative to promote healthier and more active lifestyles, resulted in a recorded amount of more than 2,000 miles of ‘steps’ that the community had taken, and culminated in a community walk that attracted more than 100 people.

• Healthy Kids Day, an annual YMCA national community event, was held in partnership with the Bernards Township Recreation Department at the Somerset Hills YMCA and was a resounding success with 26 community partners and more than 500 attendees. • The 14th Annual International Festival brought together community individuals and organizations to enjoy and share their cultures and traditions through song, dance, art and food. The 2009 event was attended by more than 300 guests representing over 40 countries, including Argentina, China, Italy, Macedonia, Scotland, Thailand and Lebanon and raised record donations for the YMCA World Service Fund. • The YMCA’s Strong Kids Benefit Performance at the Big Apple Circus was sold out for the first time ever and raised significant funds, over $42,500 for the Strong Kids Financial Assistance program. • Participation in community events and fairs such as Charter Day in Basking Ridge, Bedminster Fall Fest and Unity Day in Bernardsville, showcased the Somerset Hills YMCA and all its offerings to members and potential members and resulted in partnerships, many potential member tours, an increase in Try The Y for free passes and new memberships.

Inspired by the YMCA’s mission to provide programs to anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay, free programs were introduced to all individuals in the community that provide hope and support to those in need. These are examples of programs that make the passion of our mission evident.

• The Melissa Riggio Residence, a supportive housing project for adults with developmental disabilities, will respond to a tremendous need in our community and build on our commitment to individuals with special needs. A task force has been developing construction and fundraising plans with the goal of opening the home in late 2010.

• Living Strong, Living Well™, a twelve-week program, offers holistic support to cancer survivors. The enthusiastic response from the program’s participants, the caring encouragement that they felt for one another, as well as requests and inquiries from other cancer survivors wishing to benefit from the same experience and find hope, have spawned plans to expand the program to more adults in need. • S.W.I.M., Inc., (Specialized Water Interest Movement), is a NJ movement that was brought to the Somerset Hills YMCA through the efforts of the volunteers on the Aquatics Committee, and provides weekly aqua therapy to more than a dozen adults with muscular impairment who are unable to exercise on dry land. Heartwarming testimonies of participants finding less painful and more flexible movement are shared during the social hour that follows each workout. • Y-Splash, a biannual program that teaches children to be safe in and around water, attractedmore than 500 children. This national YMCA initiative, to ensure as many children as possible in our communities learn this potentially lifesaving skill, has enjoyed massive enrollment and popularity.

Hope

• More than 30 teens met with veterans at the Teen - Vet Connection and enjoyed camaraderie while sharing the range of their experiences. After three successful events, plans for more are underway, including a community service project in 2010. • School aged children come to the Somerset Hills YMCA each week to receive free tutoring and homework help from excelling local high school students during Students Helping Students Tutor sessions.

• The Somerset Hills YMCA held its annual Volunteer Recognition Night where more than 30 volunteers were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community. Sixteen organizations took part with an all time high of nearly 200 people in attendance. The Somerset Hills YMCA was proud to recognize Thomas Moschello as Distinguished Volunteer of the Year; Tom has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the Y since 2007 and is also Chair of the Melissa Riggio Residence Task Force. Ian Van Nest was also recognized as Distinguished Youth Volunteer of the Year; Ian volunteers as a swim instructor for the S.T.A.R.S. program, which helps young children with autism learn to swim. The Wachenfeld family was recognized as Distinguished Family of the Year; they share a commitment to volunteerism at the Somerset Hills YMCA. The YMCA was also proud to present the Millicent Fenwick Civic Award to the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church - Hearts For Honduras.

The Somerset Hills YMCA provides 20 programs for people with special needs and employs 11 staff with disabilities who epitomize the heart and soul of the organization and who champion the drive and force behind the mission to welcome and value all individuals.

• Carousel Kids, a one-week summer program for children with special needs that brought enjoyment and socialization to children, was introduced and provided them with a highlight during the summer break. A first this year, the program won a NJ YMCA Program Award; this, along with the positive response to the program, has given rise to plans for the same and more in 2010. • S.N.A.P., Special Needs Adult Program, a volunteer-run program, continues to flourish with monthly get-togethers providing socialization and activities to young adults with special needs. • Saturdays in Motion continues with strong support from volunteers and regular attendance from participants. Created to provide children with autism and their families with recreational activities in the swimming pool and gymnasium, the program has now celebrated 18 years of enjoyment at the Somerset Hills YMCA and has doubled in size.

Joy

• Participation in Girls On The Run of Somerset County, a spring and fall training program for preteen girls that educates and prepares them for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living continues to gather momentum. The Somerset Hills YMCA hosted its first Girls On The Run 5K in the fall where 550 runners participated. • Other programs too, such as Swim Fit, Girls On Track, Masters Swim, Women’s Triathlon Club, Youth Strength Training, and Teen Strength Training, experience keen growth and are evidence of the much-needed programming that the Somerset Hills YMCA provides in response to the needs of the community.

Recognizing the value of collaboration, partnerships with area organizations have increased and brought YMCA and community members a wider variety of programs and services. • Twenty-eight grant proposals were submitted over the course of the year resulted in nine funding commitments. The majority of the grants were to support the Melissa Riggio Residence which will hopefully begin construction in 2010. The remainder of the grants were program awards, namely Carousel Kids, Creative Movement, Girls On The Run 5K, and the America On the Move Community Walk, as well as one grant for the Strong Kids Financial Assistance program.

• Summer day camp at the Far Hills Country Day School was fully enrolled and offered outdoor tennis, digital media, performing arts, sports, and fine arts. The Somerset Hills YMCA also operates High School intramural basketball and a youth indoor soccer league out of this facility. • In partnership with the Somerset County Office on Aging, Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, Bernards Township Health Department, Bernards Township Recreation Department, Somerset Medical Center and Atlantic Health Rehabilitation Institute, the Somerset Hills YMCA took part in planning and hosting the Senior Health Summit, bringing more than 120 participants together to enjoy interactive workshops, flu shots and health screenings. • Classes, such as yoga, meditation, senior fitness, Zumba and willPower & grace® have been held at St. Luke’s Church in Peapack and the Clarence Dillon Library in Bedminster, and have been a big success. • A partnership between the Somerset Hills YMCA and Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA was announced that will bring outdoor recreation and sleep away camp to members of the Somerset Hills YMCA. Sunday Fundays were introduced as an added free benefit to members through winter and the spring, offering fun outdoor activities, arts and crafts.

It was Friday, March 13th, when Thomas Adams’s cell phone rang on his way to see a client in NJ. He pulled over and took the call. “That was when my life shifted gears,” Tom recalls. A regional sales manager for a performance and data networking management company in NY, Tom was informed right there at the side of the road that he was being laid off. He turned his car around and went home.

Tom decided to make the most of his time ‘off’ and do all those projects on his ‘to do’ list for which he never before seemed to have time. His first task was to stain some sliding glass doors that he’d been meaning to do for a long time. They not only still had the manufacturer’s stickers on them, but had remained bare for the best part of a year. When Tom had finished, the doors looked beautiful and, spurred on by that feeling of satisfaction, he took on and completed more and more tasks. He began to realize that he could do whatever he set his mind to do - the doors were a constant reminder of that.

Bob Stomber, a longtime volunteer at the Somerset Hills YMCA, urged Tom to attend Career Forum, a free program run by Bob and other volunteers that helps people in job transition. Career Forum first began in 1991, Bob told him, and is one of the many free programs that the Somerset Hills YMCA provides in support of the community that is funded by the Strong Kids Financial Assistance program. Before long, Tom found himself at Career Forum sitting in a chair among other members of the community who had also lost their jobs. Tom immediately felt the comfort and support of those around him, people in the same shoes as he; he realized that there was nothing to be ashamed of, and that if you are able to look upon these times in a positive light, they can actually offer an opportunity to reinvent yourself and to reset your priorities.

Career Forum taught Tom how to really listen to others like he never had before. “When a company is looking to hire someone, it’s because they have a need or a problem that has to be resolved. They are looking to take the pressure off themselves by hiring the right person for the job. So, the interview is the perfect opportunity to find out what they need and then you can apply that to your own pitch and tell them how you can help them.”

Tom was offered employment in July with a small software company and declares it’s the best job he’s ever had. He insists that Career Forum was a major turning point in his life that helped him understand that you can make something good out of nothing and that, often, job transition can be an opportunity to reinvent yourself. “I look at those beautifully stained doors every morning and smile, knowing that I learned that you can achieve a lot if you just set your mind to it.”

Thomas Adams

On any given day, you can walk along ‘Main Street’ at the Somerset Hills YMCA and you will see a very energetic young woman in or out of the pool, leading exercises in front of a class full of smiling faces and flotation devices.

Karen Muha is a certified aquatics teacher at the Somerset Hills YMCA and teaches seniors cardio and strength training in the pool three times a week. Karen and the participants have so much fun while exercising and have adopted the motto: “We look good all year round!” Karen is also co-chair and a volunteer instructor of S.W.I.M. Inc. (Specialized Water Interest Movement), a program for adults with muscular impairment who have difficulty exercising on dry land. Karen never stops chatting and laughing with program participants and she has become, for many, the life and soul of the YMCA and the reason they keep coming back. Wherever Karen goes, there is happiness and warmth... but that wasn’t always the case.

In August 2008, with two young children, a husband in job transition, and her father struggling with kidney cancer, Karen had quite simply become the caretaker of others, as if she had completely lost her own identity. Caring for her family day after day and lending them physical and mental support had taken its toll. That was when Karen realized, ‘I’ve got to get a life. I am completely worn-out.’ When the day arrived for Ben, her youngest child, to climb on the school bus for his first day of school, Karen decided it was time to regain her sense of self and she joined the Somerset Hills YMCA.

After meeting and spending time with staff during her visits, Karen began to volunteer, assisting at the annual Strong Kids Golf Classic and volunteering for projects with Sylvia Velez, Kate Russo and Laurie Reynolds. Then Karen discovered aquatics, fell in love with the activity and began to volunteer in that department. Karen took a few first aid, CPR and training courses and finally became a part time employee teaching swimming classes. She gradually began to feel better about herself and, she believes, was a better mother and wife because of it. When her doctor found a tumor in her kidney, Karen felt strong enough emotionally and physically (thanks to her involvement at the YMCA) to weather the storm. She feels so lucky - it was benign and her prognosis is excellent.

Karen looks back on the challenges she has faced and says, “Without the Y, I would have been completely lost. Eighteen months ago, I never would have believed that I could feel empowered to stand up in front of a group of people and talk to them about how to turn your life around, but now I’m actually considering it! The Somerset Hills YMCA has given me renewed purpose, hope and energy. They really do build strong kids, strong families and strong communities – I am the proof of that!”

“Many people ask, ‘Why have you been a member and supported the Somerset Hills YMCA for so many years?’ The answer is very simple,” says Fox Stoddard. “The strength of our country depends on the thousands of strong communities supported by millions of volunteers and the YMCA movement is a vital leader in building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.”

Fox Stoddard, a retired officer at A.T. & T. Corporation, has been a member of the Somerset Hills YMCA for over 31 years, when there was just a pool! There was no daycare or gymnasium, a staff of maybe three or four and approximately 1800 members. The few classes that the Somerset Hills YMCA ran were held where the fire truck parked in the old Bernardsville Fire House! Fox was recruited to the Board of Directors in 1978, becoming Chair of the Board in the early 1980’s. At one of Fox’s first Board meetings, a letter from the bank informed the Board that the Somerset Hills YMCA was facing severe financial difficulties and potential foreclosure. Determined to avert this crisis, Fox and the two other new Board members (Bob Ohaus and Mary Chandor) decided they would not leave the meeting until they had collected enough pledges to pay the bank - they suceeded. Fox has since played a key role in three capital campaigns and three expansions of the Y’s Mt. Airy Road location. He is proud to be associated with one of the premier YMCA’s in NJ. The growth to over 22,000 members is evidence of the Y’s importance to our community. He is a past recipient of the Millicent Fenwick Civic Award, and helped Jack Welch establish the Robert E. Ohaus Award, an annual award that honors a volunteer member of the YMCA’s Board of Directors for their outstanding time and support. Fox is currently Chair of the YMCA’s Advisory Board and one of the Somerset Hills YMCA’s strongest advocates. His commitment and belief in the mission of the YMCA serve as an example to others of how to best support those less fortunate in the community. “Fox Stoddard has had a remarkable impact in this community through his dedicated support of our mission to serve all individuals through programs and services from which they might not otherwise be able to benefit,” states Bob Lomauro, President & CEO of the Somerset Hills YMCA. “He began volunteering at the YMCA in the 1970’s and quickly became one of the YMCA’s strongest advocates, educating others about our mission and the importance of the YMCA to the community. Without Fox Stoddard, this Y may not even be here today. It can safely be said that we all owe Fox gratitude beyond words.”

Fox Stoddard

As a leader in the field of wellness and a supporter of healthy lifestyles, the Somerset Hills YMCA spearheads beneficial initiatives that coach children and their families on exercise, nutrition and emotional well-being. • As part of the Activate America initiative, the Somerset Hills YMCA has secured the opportunity to join together with the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign that will help the community toward attaining ‘Healthy Town’ status, by developing sustainable wellness programs for seniors, youth, teens and adults. • The Somerset Hills YMCA’s School Age Child Care program has been applying the practices for obesity prevention over the course of the past school year and in some summer camps. Staff members are ‘Healthy U trained,’ thanks to a grant from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, and introduced healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables and salad, thirty minutes of vigorous activity and encourage parental involvement, education and support. • Plans for a developed backyard at the Mount Airy Road facility have begun with hopes to bring outdoor activity and enjoyment to children and youth in the community. This ‘Field of Dreams’ project will include a new playground, plus recreation and social areas; in other words, the opportunity for kids to ‘just be kids’ without the confines of organized sport.

• The Millicent Fenwick Day Care Center finished the year fully enrolled in all classes. Summer Camp programs served 705 children who, over the course of the entire summer filled 1,766 camper openings, including programs at Far Hills Country Day School. Our camping program obtained an ACA Accreditation. This accreditation is awarded to camps that meet up to 300 standards for health, safety, and program quality. Our Explorers camp was recognized by the NJ YMCA Membership and Program Network for program excellence.

Our community, while facing its own economic crisis, understood nonetheless how the Somerset Hills YMCA reaches out to those in need. Our members found deeper faith in our charitable mission as we witnessed an increase in the number of donors and the amount raised.

• The number of charitable donations to the Strong Kids Campaign increased this year from 521 donor gifts in 2008 to 662 in 2009, or by 27%. These donations, as well as funds raised through other sources, amounted to $310,215. However, in order to meet the needs of those applying for assistance, the Somerset Hills YMCA awarded $476,384 in direct financial assistance. This amount, along with program subsidies and services that the Somerset Hills YMCA provides to its members and the community total $626,384. The Somerset Hills YMCA prides itself on offering programs and assistance to individuals in need, whether through emotional, financial, or physical support. That need during 2009 was greater than ever.

Strong Kids

• An Integrated Marketing Plan centered around the tagline ‘One of Life’s Best Investments’ was successfully executed in 2009 to relaunch the Somerset Hills YMCA brand and to enhance awareness, understanding and support of the YMCA’s mission. Communication to our members and to the public at large was fine-tuned in order to reach key constituencies and to serve members with accurate and engaging updates and information. Our online ‘click-through’ rates and new subscribers to our eNews Alerts have increased exponentially over the course of 2009, evidence that news content and delivery are satisfying and enjoyed by the 10,500 database contacts.

• A carefully planned process was implemented to ‘be green’ and to transition the majority of our members so that they receive the quarterly program guide online, instead of in print. This, along with frequent electronic news alerts and website accuracy, has led to an extremely positive response from members and a reduction in printing costs.

• A 2009 My Y, My Why Essay Contest was launched and the results generated inspiring member stories that elicited lively conversation and an added awareness about the YMCA’s mission.

• A new coalition of human service organizations and individuals concerned with public and mental health, youth and family development, adolescent medicine, community education and a variety of related areas of expertise, named Healthy Outcomes Partnership, was formed to address common barriers to healthy relationships and to help people connect with the resources they need to overcome these problems. The first event, a forum titled, ‘Who Pulled the Rug Out?’ which enjoyed an audience of approximately 100 residents, incited provocative conversation and resulted in a unanimous decision to continue the program.

• Over the course of 2009, more than 100 new volunteers walked through our doors, contributing in so many ways to the well-being and support of our members. Volunteers serve in myriad ways, serving as policy volunteers on committees, assisting with swim, dance, and sports classes, special events, and helping to raise money and awareness for the Strong Kids Financial Assistance program.

Support

• Career Forum, a volunteer-led program that offers advice and networking to those in job transition, experienced record attendance and has grown from 1,473 total attendees in 2008 to 2,152 in 2009 or a 31% increase. Funded by the Somerset Hills YMCA’s Strong Kids Financial Assistance program, Career Forum has operated every week since its inception in 1991. This program is open to any member of the community and is free of charge.

• Toastmasters continues to garner more members as individuals strive to develop and improve their public speaking abilities through local club meetings, training seminars and speech contests. The Somerset Hills YMCA provides the meeting space for Toastmasters each week throughout the year.

• With input from staff in a confidential online health assessment, the Human Resources Department completed a wellness initiative through the National YMCA Employee Benefits Plan which resulted in a significant medical premium refund. The Finance Department underwent a staff restructure to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

• Membership at the Somerset Hills YMCA has gained more added value with the introduction of free benefits such as Kinesis all access, fitness assessments and equipment orientations, and a nutrition blog to assist members with healthier eating choices. More classes, such as multi-sports, soccer and basketball were added to meet demand at both locations. New classes, such as fencing, football and soccer skills, dodge ball and kids’ Olympics were also successfully introduced.

• Enrollment in the Dance Team doubled in 2009, and eight new dance classes were introduced in the YMCA’s service area for preschool, elementary school age children and after school programs. • Membership at the Somerset Hills YMCA has remained strong at both facilities with average retention rates of 71.5% at Mount Airy and 75% at Riverwalk, significantly higher than retention rates at other YMCAs nationwide. This significant statistic was achieved through aggressive membership incentives, including free Try the Y for free passes, one free month of membership to new members who visit the facility 60 times in six months, birthday emails, new member orientations, welcome calls and ‘We miss you’ emails sent to members who are inactive for more than 60 days.

• Facility usage was up nearly 9% at Mount Airy Rd and 7% at Riverwalk, proof that members feel their investment in a YMCA membership is being more valued and maximized.

• New wellness equipment was installed at both Mount Airy Road and Riverwalk facilities, bringing members optimum service and comfort.
