Online Pre-Admission Conference

This is a required session that you must view when applying to the Surgical Technology program

At the end of the program, you will need to print, complete, and submit the viewing verification form and the Surgical Technology program application forms found on the Surgical Technology website

These forms should be submitted to Tammy Watters in the Harold Rogers Student Commons building room 222 by June 1st. The Harold Rogers Student Commons building is located on the Somerset main campus: http://sccmaps.net/

These forms are essential-without them in your file, you will not be considered for the program

Program Accreditation

The Surgical Technology program at SCC is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

Graduates receiving their degrees meet the requirements to take the national certification exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). All students must take this exam to graduate

Program Description

Program completion requires 1 year of instruction after formal admission to the program

18 students are admitted every August. Selections are made after June for the August start date

The program is a mixture of didactic and clinical coursework You must maintain a “C” average in ALL courses including

general education courses Some semesters may require as many as 30-40 hours per

week of student involvement

Technical Standards

Surgical Technology involves the provision of direct care for individuals and is characterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performance of surgical technology technical functions. Therefore, all applicants should possess: Sufficient visual acuity, such as is needed in the

surgical environment and for the observation necessary for patient assessment and care

Technical Standards

Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health team and to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices (e.g., cardiac monitors, biomedical equipment, fire alarms, etc.);

Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement the skills, including the manipulation of equipment, positioning and lifting patients required in meeting health needs related to surgical technology

Technical Standards

Sufficient verbal and non-verbal communication skills (speech, reading, and writing), such as are needed in classroom and clinical settings to interact with patients and professional personnel; and

Sufficient intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement care for individuals

Additional Information

Visible tattoos must be covered in all patient care areas Due to facility policy clinical sites will not allow

students with certain skin conditions like psoriasis to participate in clinical rotations

CPR certification must be obtained prior to clinicalsmid-October and must be obtained from the American Heart Association only

Clinical Education Component

Each semester includes a clinical education course Clinical sites are located in many areas both in and out of

Somerset Students cannot request a specific clinical site and are

not guaranteed rotations at specific sites closest to their home

Class and clinical schedules are non-negotiable and will vary each semester

All students should expect to have to drive to out of town clinical sites

Students cannot leave a clinical site without permission from a preceptor or clinical instructor 13

Admission Requirements In order to be considered for admission into the Surgical

Technology program at SCC, the following items must be in completed by June 1 of the year you wish to be considered: Current address, e-mail address and phone number on file Online Pre Admission Conference Verification form and Surgical

Technology application on file-A new verification form/application must be submitted every year you wish to be considered

Transfer Surgical Technology students must have a “C” or better in all gen ed and Surgical Technology courses to be eligible for admission. Also, students must submit a recommendation letter from the previous Surgical Technology Program Coordinator

All students must have an advising session with a Surgical Technology advisor to be considered for acceptance

Admissions RequirementsImportant facts to remember

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all required items are in their ST admissions folder prior to the June 1 deadline

Once the June 1 deadline occurs, an applicant CANNOT add any additional information to their folder-if your file is incomplete, you will not be considered for admission that year

Again, it is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm that their file is complete every year they wish to be considered

Points System

No minimum ACT score is required; however, extra points will be awarded if the ACT score is 20 or above. Points will be given according to grade earned for each required Gen Ed class listed below

First time students are admitted based on a point system. Points are given for ACT/Compass scores and each general education class completed with a “C” or better

Refer to the Surgical Technology points document on the website to add up your total score and bring it to your advising appointment, so your advisor can review it with you

Selective Admissions

After the June 1 deadline, all applicant information is reviewed by the selection committee-this process may take several weeks, every applicant will receive a letter whether accepted, an alternate, or not accepted; please be patient.

Selection is based on the following preference criteria Completion of

BIO 137 BIO 139 BIO 118 OR BIO 225 OR BIO 226 OR BIO 227 AHS 115 OR CLA 131 OR MIT 103 Digital Literacy or computer competency exam

Cumulative GPA of all general education courses that are applicable to the Surgical Technology program. GPA must be 2.0 or higher with preference given to those above 2.5

Program Graduation Requirements

The surgical technology program is progressive in nature. In order to successfully complete this program; the student must meet the requirements for each semester in order to proceed to the next semester. The following are the individual semester requirements:

SUR 100-Successful completion with an overall average of 77% or greater.

SUR 101-Requires 77% or greater on all written exams and quizzes

SUR 125-Requires completion of 120 clinical hours as assigned. Clinical evaluations must average to 77% or greater.

SUR 130-Successful completion with an overall average of 77% or greater.

Spring semester

SUR 200-Successful completion with an overall average of 77% or greater.

SUR 201-Requires completion of 360 clinical hours as assigned. Clinical evaluations must average to 77% or greater.

total scrubbed cases for the entire program: a minimum of 120 surgical cases for the entire program must be documented in the roles and categories set forth by AST in the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology 6th edition. 23

Graduates must sit for the NBSTSA certification exam in June of the graduating year. Exam registration and fees are to be submitted by the student in Feb. or March of graduating year.

These requirements are in addition to all college requirements for graduation.
