Create closer relationships between NGBs and schools so that they can each develop greater understanding of how to implement effective school programmes. What was the impact and who benefitted from your solutions? Young people: This scheme has provided more opportunities for young people to access coaching, volunteering and competitive experiences, as well as enhanced curriculum opportunities. Schools: Eight schools have agreements in place with NGBs which has led to access in increased support, e.g. twilight insets, curriculum and resources (financial and physical). NGBs: NGBs are able to develop a better understanding of the realities of implementing some of the formats of their sport in a school setting, and the challenges that schools face in increasing their competitive offer. What were your findings? NGBs are happy to enter into relationships with individual schools, so that they can target resources. Schools need to be selected by the NGB and then approached to ensure a mutual commitment. Where resources and programmes can be built in together the offer works better, e.g. Badminton England linked their Change4life badminton sports club with a programme for coaching and leadership programmes, which in turn created wider competitive opportunities for B and C teams to access competition. SOmerset Activity and SpOrts Partnership Lead professional: Nancy Murdoch, School Games Organiser, Mendip What would be your top tips for other SGOs wishing to address a similar challenge? Approach an NGB with an idea of what areas of development you want to prioritise within your SGO area. Work with them to identify appropriate support opportunities. These could include: Leadership, coaching and official training. Support for G&T students. Support from the NGB to deliver all levels of competition (for example through twilight insets, and training). To develop a sustainable way of working and develop relationships between schools and National Governing Bodies (NGBs). This will ensure more ownership from the school as well as support the development of NGB programmes. What was the challenge?

What were your proposed solutions and why?

– Develop an agreement to work together (school and NGB) over a sustained period of time so that the programmes can evolve.

– Create closer relationships between NGBs and schools so that they can each develop greater understanding of how to implement effective school programmes.

– NGBs are happy to enter into relationships with individual schools, so that they can target resources.

– Schools need to be selected by the NGB and then approached to ensure a mutual commitment.

– Where resources and programmes can be built in together the offer works better, e.g. Badminton England linked their Change4life badminton sports club with a programme for coaching and leadership programmes, which in turn created wider competitive opportunities for B and C teams to access competition.
