Future Spaces – Potential internships

Future Spaces = evolution of SD-LAN concept

1. Tunnelized IoT protocols such as bluetooth, zigbee, weave, … (Q1)

SD-LAN with such protocols: remote communication of devices as if they were in the

same LAN. Use of open source libraries for that. Experimental demonstrator set-up.

2. Generic interface between Open vSwitch and VNFs (e.g., NAT, Firewall) (Q1)

State-of-the-Art, SW architecture design and implementation (Kernel, DPDK),

performance analysis (latency benchmarking).

3. Generalized OpenFlow with generic pattern matching (Q1)

State-of-the-Art, SW architecture design and implementation (e.g., DPDK) and

performance evaluation of the prototype.

4. Generalized OpenFlow for bit-stream network (Q3)

Study of the usage of Generalized OpenFlow for green-field networking solutions.

Implementation on an experimental platform and performance evaluation.

5. SDN in terminals: SDN controllers for COs… (Q3)

State-of-the-Art, SW architecture design and implementation (Android), network impact

analysis of having SDN controllers in connected objects or smart phones.

Self-Adaptive VO Chaining – Potential internships

Self-Adaptive VO Chaining = focus on IoT-based service “self-management”

Self-built catalog of CoVOs, CoVO self-healing, (Co)VO self-recommendation…

We already defined a modeling framework based on attributed typed graphs (2015 internship) that

we are using for IoT-based service classification

1. IoT-based service generator tool (CoVO generator)

Objective:

In order to consolidate and validate algorithms to classify IoT-based services (CoVOs), we need to

automatically generate IoT-based service examples

Expected realizations:

Analysis of existing resources about IoT devices and IoT-based services, data models, …

SW design and development for the IoT-based service generator: exploitation of the existing

resources, generation and handling of lot of instances of VO models for IoT devices and CoVO

models for IoT-based service, development of a user interface for VO/CoVO

representation/visualization, CoVO composition from VOs, output data file export for simulations…

Use case: exploitation of the generator tool to validate some of our CoVO classification algorithms

Desired skills:

Programming (C or Java), algorithm design, graph theory, simulations

1. Trusted path computation and enforcement in SDN

Context: support security and sovereignty policies for the transfer of sensitive data


Specification/design of a SDN-based network application for trusted-path

Implementation on a SDN controller (e.g., OpenDaylight)

Experimentation on a SDN platform (with OpenFlow physical switches and Open vSwitch virtual

switches)

Desired skills:

Knowledge about SDN

Knowledge about Open vSwitch or OpenDaylight

IP Transport

Intelligent Optical Networks – Internship proposal

1. Leveraging monitoring information to design optical networks

Context: data mining in optical networks

Novel optical network design techniques based on the collection of information during network

operation to anticipate any performance fluctuation.

Objective: decrease network design cost through the reduction of various margins with better

optical network dimensioning.


Set up a network simulator that mimics optical network monitoring functions

Use the monitoring data to extract key features about the network physical layer

Improve the prediction of the network performance.

Desired skills:

Analytical skills: linear algebra, probabilities.

Coding: Java or Matlab.

Background in data mining / big data.

Background in telecommunication networks would be a plus, but is not mandatory.

Background in optical communication would be a plus, but is not mandatory.
