Tory candidate Arnold Viersen, hiscampaign manager, and whyrainbows aren’t gay

Above you can hear a few minutes from an all candidates meeting inAlberta. Present at the meeting was Arnold Viersen, the Conservativecandidate in the new riding of Peace River-Westlock(http://www.arnoldviersen.ca/).

As you can hear from the question, Mr Viersen was involved with anorganization called ARPA – the Association for Reformed PoliticalAction. This is an extreme right organization with ugly views on FirstNations, (https://arpacanada.ca/issuesresearch/aboriginal-affairs)Multiculturalism(https://arpacanada.ca/issuesresearch/multiculturalism), Muslims(https://arpacanada.ca/issuesresearch/multiculturalism/1189-mike-schouten-gets-surrey-talking-about-muslim-immigration-and-multiculturalism), Gays(https://arpacanada.ca/issuesresearch/sexuality), and abortionrights (https://arpacanada.ca/issuesresearch/life-issues). Here’s asample of the type of events they hold – the information on this onehas been deleted, but this link remains.

Discussing ‘fertility rates’ as part of a far right talk about‘multiculturalism’ has never led anywhere positive.

Mr Viersen seems to want to hide his views on abortion – as far as Ican tell, the question asked at the All Candidates meeting was thefirst time he addressed the issue since entering politics. But hisextremist views aren’t seriously in dispute:

Looking more closely at those pictures – that sign Mr Viersen isholding, that’s from an organization called WeNeedaLaw.ca(http://www.weneedalaw.ca/). It’s a group led by Mike Schouten,seen here on the ARPA website – where his anti-Muslim views areproudly featured:

The goal of WeNeedALaw is to restrict the reproductive rights ofCanadian women. You’ll note the paucity of women in the picture.

Not that there weren’t women at the God and Governmentconference. Here’s a screengrab of a woman from an ARPA YouTubevideo – granted, she spends most of the video trying to hide the anti-Gay and anti-abortion extremist signs behind here:

This is the hate-filled conference and anti-abortion rally, Mr Viersenrefers to as “a family trip” in his promotional materials – somethingalluded to in the debate question at the top of this post.

I don’t want to go too much further down the rabbit hole with ARPA.It’s extremist, it’s ugly, it works against the rights of Canadians, it hasterrible anti-Canadian views on multiculturalism and First Nations,and it is home to a group of people that should have no access togovernment.

Though of course they will. Mr Viersen is running in Peace River,Alberta. There is no chance he’ll lose. This person and these views aregoing to parliament – his campaign is just a formality.

Speaking of the campaign though, it might be useful to take a closerlook at that. I received an email mentioning that Mr Viersen’scampaign had changes recently. One campaign manager was firedand another brought in. Without hard proof I don’t want to say thereason given. But if we look at the new Campaign Manager it mightshed some light on the reason for that change.

I’m not 100% sure who the new campaign manager is. The localmedia don’t know. Mr Viersen doesn’t respond to Facebookmessages, emails, or calls. But if I had to guess, I’d say it was a personnamed Jacqueline Hamoen.

Ms Hamoen was also in attendance at the “pro-life” AGM shownabove. Sheworked with him in ARPA, where she was responsible for events(https://arpacanada.ca/local-arpas/barrheadneerlandia).

Looking through the campaign website, we see Ms Hamoen pop up alot. In this first picture she’s standing to Mr. Viersen’s left, wearing alanyard:

Let’s take a look at some of Ms. Hamoen’s views – remembering thatshe is rumored to be the replacement campaign manager, the personapparently more in tune with Mr. Viersen’s views.

First off, let’s start with one of the most petty homophobia I’ve everseen – saying LGBT people shouldn’t use the rainbow as theirsymbol:

To summarize, what do we know?

Arnold Viersen is an anti-abortion militant as can be seen in thepictures aboveHe has associated with an racist, anti-multiculturalism, anti-choice, anti-Muslim activist – Mr. SchoutenHe was a member of a very troubling organization – ARPAHis campaign appears to be run by another ARPA memberThat ARPA member is open in her anti-gay views, and herexcessive and anti-democratic views towards members of theoppositionMr Viersen’s partner is also an anti-abortion militant, calling it“murder”When confronted on some of these issues at the recent debate, Mr.Viersen took a hostile toneThe Harper Conservatives have re-opened the abortion debate inthe past(http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2010/10/29/will_roxannes_law_turn_back_clock.html), under the leadership of anti-abortion militants like Mr. Viersen
