January 2, 2012 Dear Tawanda Lawrence ,

As you know, in the third grade curriculum, we have been studying about our solar system and about John Houbolt. We have been researching and exploring our planet Earth, the moon, and the other planets in the solar system. Part of the curriculum is learning about different parts of space. With that being said, we as the third grade team, would like permission to take both third grade classes on a field trip to the Joliet Historical Museum in downtown Joliet.

The objectives for taking this field trip to the Joliet Historical Museum would be that the students will be able to receive inquiry based learning on the different components of the solar system and how a person from our community made a big impact with NASA. The students will be have seven stations, one of the stations will be the lunch station and the other six stations will have engaging activities. This field trip will provide the students with questions and answers to real life situations on land and space.

Upon arrival at the Joliet Historical Museum, the groups will get started at their centers, which are all lead by former teachers who now work at the Joliet Historical Museum. Each station is 20 minute long and is filled with educational hands on activities provided by the Joliet Historical Museum. The centers are: the Houbolt Gallery, Solar System Trivia, Train like an Astronaut, Pin the Red Spot on Jupiter, Landing on the Moon, 3,2,1, Lift Off, and lunch.

Our tentative date for taking this field trip is February 20, 2012.The cost for each student will be eight dollars and forty-four cents. Thank you for taking the time to consider this inquiry based field trip. We look forward to your reply on this particular matter.

Sincerely, The Third Grade Team

WOW!!!!Thought from Amie

• Time consuming: Only two classrooms Looking up data

• Does it work Educational no “fluff” Fitting it in the ILS

• Schedule Timing of school and destination Lunches

My personal thoughts about this: what a great way to learn about what it really takes to plan a field trip, and all of the “things” to consider when planning a field trip. By having the experience of student teaching at a school where money is a factor, it helped remind me that the cost may not be a problem for me, but what about those students that it does. Beatriz and I would have loved to have made a whole day out of the field trip and did another section on social studies, but after adding the cost of admission and the bus, we decided that there would be too many students who would not be able to attend. I can’t think of anything sadder than seeing students who can’t go due to a money situation that is out of their control. What I love about the Joliet Historical Museum is there are actual teachers who get the groups going and help them get the most of their experiences at the museum. I also like that for all of the activities they are based off of the learning standards, and they state the grade that the groups work best for. My only disadvantage is that they don’t open until 11 am, which makes it hard to attend this field trip if the school you are at is: an early start or far away. I also like that this gives the students a chance to see why a street in Joliet is named after a person, and it shows that his or her ideas could change the world.

I enjoyed going with my family to the Joliet Historical Museum, and I would love to go back and complete some more of the hands on activities.
