How AVT™ works

VibrationWhen using a power tool,vibration is produced as aby-product of that process.Vibration used to be somethingthat was overlooked byemployers and employees alike.However, with the effects ofvibration exposure beingrevealed, it was necessary formanufacturers and employersto take a serious stance to protectthe workforce. The vibrationmagnitude is frequency weighted

acceleration value measured inmetres per second squared (m/s2).

If steps are not taken to limit theamount of vibration a machineproduces and the level ofexposure an individual receives,then injuries such as VibrationWhite Finger (VWF) will occurthrough Hand-Arm Vibration(HAV). This can potentially leaveemployers open to legal issues.

In July 2005 the Physical AgentsDirective became law. The lawmeant that all power tools hadto have their vibration levelsmeasured and that informationto be made available to anyone.This information helps towardseducating the operator tounderstand how long they cansafely operate a machine.

Vibration dampeningtechnology

Makita havedeveloped aparticularly

effective system for damping enginevibrations: the Makita two-masssystem known as M2M. The vibratingmass, consisting of the engine, barand chain, is isolated from the otherparts of the chain saw by vibrationdamper elements. The dampingmass is thus greater and – inaccordance with the physical law ofinertia – more effective than simplydamping the handles.

Scientific measurements carried outby various test institutes haveconfirmed the remarkableeffectiveness of the M2M system.Effective vibration damping reducesthe physical stress of working with achain saw. The hands remain steadywhen cutting and the guide bar canbe guided safely and accurately.
