“” was chosen as a topic of particular
importance by the National Science TeachersAssociation for the 2007 National Conference onScience Education. LaMotte Company offers awide selection of products to enhance yourexploration of this significant and fascinatingsubject in the classroom and in the field.
You don't have to leave the building to take yourclass on the (p.27) where studentslearn the importance of wetlands and estuariesand the impact of every day human activities oncoastal and ocean ecosystems. The
(p.29) and the (p.29) alsomotivate students through entertaining hands-onexperiments and classroom activities.
LaMotte (p.18) and testingoutfits (p.13) have been used for decades byschools and citizen monitoring groups to collectreliable and accurate water quality data in thefield. If you are starting a new monitoringprogram, the
(p.12) will help you set up amonitoring program specific for your localwaterway.
If an introduction to water quality testing is whatyou need, the
(p.6) will allow yourstudents to easily test near-by fresh, estuarine andmarine sites. These versatile kits range from non-hazardous TesTabs reagent systems to test kitsfeatured and supported by the standard text forschool-based water monitoring programs.
A great accompaniment, or alternative, tochemical testing is the use of
such as macroinvertebrates. Inthe classroom, (p.9), developed inpartnership with Alabama Water Watch, serves asan excellent introduction. For a more complexstudy of aquatic macroinvertebrates in the field, get your feet wet with the
(p.10), developed byLaMotte Company and the Stroud WaterResearch Center.

Global Learning AndObservations To BenefitThe Environment (GLOBE)
is a worldwide network of students, teachers, and scientists workingtogether to study and understandthe global environment. With GLOBE,teachers guide their students throughdaily, weekly, and seasonal environmentalobservations such as air temperature, precipitation, and water quality. Using the Internet, students send theirdata to the GLOBE Student Data Archive. Each day, images created from the GLOBE student datasets areposted on the GLOBE website, www.globe.gov, andstudents can visualize their environmental observations.Scientists use this data for research and provide feedbackto students to enrich their science education.

Visual MethodsOcta-Slide and OctetComparators feature eight colorstandards with built-in filters thateliminate optical distortion. Sometests include an Axial Readerattachment that uses a mirror toextend the view path and intensifyfaint colors in low concentrations.Laminated color charts offer aninexpensive means of measuringcolor, and are often used withtablet methods and test strips.
Direct Reading TitratorThe Direct ReadingTitrator is a 1.0 mLmicroburet calibrated toallow direct reading oftest results. Each titratorhas a specific range, butmay be refilled to testhigher concentrations.
Colorimetric:Colorimetric means to measure color. Reagents are added toa sample resulting in a reaction that produces a color, theintensity of which is related to the concentration of the testfactor. The test factor concentration is then determined bymeasuring the color, either visually or electronically.
Titrimetric:Titrimetric analyses are conducted by adding a solution ofknown strength (the titrant) to a specific volume of a samplein the presence of an indicator. The indicator produces acolor change, which shows that the reaction is complete. The following methods are most often used in environmentaleducation.
Electronic Meter/Probe:Electronic methods generally use a special electrode formeasuring a specific test factor. An electrode is immersedinto a sample, and an amplified current or voltage isproduced and translated into a digital readout.

Electronic MethodsElectronic colorimetersor spectrophotometershelp eliminate visualinconsistencies andprovide a dedicatedlight source. The lightsource passes througha sample and is thenmeasured by aphotodetector. Theresults are translated toa digital output in ppm,%T or Absorbance.
Dropper Bottle/PipetA pipet or special droppertip fitted onto the reagentbottle is used to deliver aconsistent standard dropsize. The number of dropsused to complete thereaction in the treatedsample is multiplied by agiven factor to producethe test result.

Macro ManiaGrades 3 and up
Order Code 5942NH (1)
Macro Mania is a classroom adventure that introduces the use of streammacroinvertebrates to determine water quality. Lecture material sets thescene for the activity. Students will learn about the influence of land use onwater quality and the practice of macroinvertebrate sampling to measurewater quality. Six teams will be given a deck of macroinvertebrate cardsrepresenting a sample of macroinvertebrates from one of three sites, aposter-sized sorting sheet and a map. By sorting the deck of cards onto thesorting sheets, students will determine the water quality at their site from thedistribution of macroinvertebrates in their sample. Optional math, publicspeaking, writing, art and card game extensions will further emphasize theland use/water quality connection. Includes a deck of cards and sortingsheets for six teams. Also includes Macro Mania manual containingbackground information, step-by-step instructions for activities andextensions. Colorful Macro Mania classroom poster is also included!
