What happens to you in solitary confinement?

(First hand experience – I spent 40 days in a very touch solitary confinement in Iran.)

I. Fear

Why am I here? How long will I be here? Will they torture me? What will happen to me???

I. FEAR

• Such a fear consumes one completely, overwhelming the first days in solitary. – Many people lose the sense of reality. High

heart beat, lack of sleep, extremely small living space…

– All of this can easily lead to immediate physical and mental problems.

II. ANGER

Anger often comes right after fear….

II. ANGER

• I felt anger toward almost everybody while in the small Iranian prison cell. God, my family, friends, people who arrested me, and most importantly—myself.

• I’d hit the wall with my fist; jump up and down on the floor. Once I discharged that negative energy, I’d simply collapse on the floor and cry. The rage completely drained me. . .

III. CALMING DOWN

After a while, the prisoner becomes familiar with the prison routine. He knows what’s happening and what will happen. He

knows what to expect.

III.CALMING DOWN

• However strange it sounds, one gets accustomed to the new living conditions to a certain extent.

• Understanding that no choice exists, one adapts to their solitary confinement. It can take a few days, a few weeks even, but one does eventually grow partially used to things.

I’ve been in solitary confinement for 40 days, innocent. And I’ve talked to people who spent there 6 months,

innocent. Everybody got accustomed to it. There was no other choice for

us…..

Effects on body? Effects on mind?

That varies from person to person, and depends a lot on how you decide to

approach your arrest, and how you decide to live in a small cell on your own.

Page 10: Solitary confinement effects

Your mind can make it a hell, …

Page 11: Solitary confinement effects

… or, possibly, a positive life changing experience, a rare chance to think… about all that you’ve been through and all that you will do once they free you

again. A chance to change your life.

Page 12: Solitary confinement effects

The difference is mostly in your mind.

What would you make out of your stay???
