Municipal Solid Waste Management
Landfills• The location of a landfill is determined by a number of
factors. –Need a location that is far away from rivers, lakes, and
drinking water. – Need a location that is away from population centers.
Environmental Justice: Situated in highly populated low income areas.
Landfills• Want to site a landfill where there is a lot of clay-rich soil.
Incineration• Waste incineration is a preferred method in Connecticut
because it reduces the volume and mass. – Example of cogeneration —> Heat used to generate electricity.
15-25% mass reduction 5-15% volume reduction
Incineration• Ash generated by incineration is broken into two categories.
– Bottom ash is 80-90% by weight. – Main components are silica, calcium, iron oxide, and aluminum
oxide. – Fly ash is 10-20% by weight
– Fine particles removed from flue gases.
What happens to the ash depends on whether or not it is hazardous!

Incineration• If not burned properly, dangerous air pollutants can be
created by the incineration process. – Needs to be burned at a high enough temperature.
• Dioxins are highly persistent in the environment. – 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin = TCDD = most toxic – Cause cancer, sever reproductive and developmental problems.
Dioxins Furans
MSW Costs Money• Both incineration and landfill disposal has a tipping fee.
Average US Landfill = $44 per ton
CT’s Landfill = $57.15 per ton
CT’s Incineration fee = $62-65 per ton
• Connecticut hopes to increase recycling rate to 60% by 2024.
“The trash-to-energy technology is now 30 years old. The desire is to treat our waste
less as waste and more as useful material.” Tom Kirk, president and CEO of the
Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority
Don’t Put It Here!• Not all household products can go in a MSW landfill.
–Metals, such as aluminum and copper, that can leach. –Hazardous materials
Currently a movement to keep organics (yard debris, food scraps, etc.) out of landfills because they cause GHG and can be taken care of in a better way.
