Anointing of the Sick.. (which was known as Extreme

Unction or Last Rites) has taken a different connotation since

The Second Vatican Council. The sacrament is celebrated not

only for those who are dying, but to those preparing for major

surgery, the aged, and the sick. It is time for the Church to pray

for and with those who are ill and anoint them with oil. The

proper celebrant of this sacrament is a priest. Those who desire

to receive this sacrament are to contact Fr. Martin, in advance.

Praised be Jesus Christ! Years ago when I was in seminary I

remember a question that was almost always asked after every homily: “What is the good news?” The idea was to impress on us our responsibility to unleash the hope written into the Scrip-tures by the Holy Spirit. Maybe you’ve heard homilies that were depressing because there was never any silver lining of-fered – if the preacher had spent more time in prayer this prob-ably would not have happened. This is a preface to what is very sad news: Ireland legalized abortion in May. But let’s begin with the good news because in America the pro-life cause has arguably never been stronger. For example, the number of abortions has dropped precipitously and the number of clinics performing them has declined from 2,200 to fewer than 500 today. Again, fewer doctors are willing to perform abortions, leading to an aging and dwindling population of abortionists. Because of the dozens of stories testifying to the trauma expe-rienced by abortion staff (e.g. the movie “Blood Money”), many are walking away and never coming back. Our neighbors in

Iowa have adopted the strongest laws yet protecting our most vulnerable citizens and the tide is rising that will one day pro-tect each human being from conception until natural death. Without getting too far off the topic, it’s the latter situation (i.e. euthanasia) that grows more bleak by the day. Now as anyone who has ever participated in the annual March for Life knows, the pro-life movement is young, hopeful, and extremely prayer-ful. And so God has raised up a generation that intuitively knows abortion is never a solution – it only sows seeds of des-pair. Anyone who is honest about abortion must admit that it leads to greater poverty among women, opens the door to more child abuse (which stands to reason – abortion is an act of violence that desensitizes, paving the way to other forms of violence), and promotes racism (the number of minorities ter-minated in America, not to mention the location of Planned Parenthood clinics makes this very difficult to refute). Young

Americans know this and so the tide is turning to an era that will one day see abortion no longer validated by law or senti-ment. Sadly, Ireland has been enticed to take a path that final-ly will lead to heartache and division. The Catholic Church in Ireland deserves our prayers for all she did to preach the Gos-pel in our country. The number of priests who came from the land of Saint Patrick to offer our forebears the sacraments is seemingly innumerable. But the devil never sleeps, and he wove a web of corruption and scandal that reduced the Church in Ireland to an anachronism that no longer has a voice of cred-ibility. When the country most needed Catholics to make their voices heard they were crippled not so much by the sins of a few, but by the willingness of some of their leaders to hide those sins, thus needlessly exposing others to harm. And yet the faith in Ireland is ancient and deep, and it has suffered in ways that we cannot begin to fathom. The story being told is how a new generation is throwing off the shackles of a medie-

val faith so that it can revel in newfound freedom. The good news is that this narrative is a sham that bears little in common with the truth. Certainly the devil found Ireland ripe for the picking and so the evil of abortion has come to their land for the first time. But as we’ve seen in America these past 45 years, the greater the struggle the more glorious the triumph. We thank God in advance for the end of abortion in America, in Ireland and in the whole world. Yes, darkness has had its hour, but we are children of the light.

May God convince our world that only in the truth of the Gospel will we find freedom!

sponsored by the PCCW of the parish. The monies

collected will go to the Cosa Hogar Juan Pablo Orphanage

near Lurin, Peru. It is 20 miles outside of Lima. This project

provides milk for the children at the orphanage and the

surrounding Peruvian area. Please note the “Special Milk

Can” in the gathering area is to place your monetary

contribution into. The children sincerely appreciate your

support.

CATHOLIC Adventure Camp July 8-13. This is for teens currently in grades 6-12. Crosswoods Christian Adventure Camp, located south of Ashland, has been reserved for

the Diocese of LaCrosse! This high adventure week will offer you the chance for rock

climbing, repelling, canoeing, mountain bike riding, low ropes and high ropes, adventure trails, hiking, and time for prayer, the sacraments and reflection on God’s marvelous

Tanzania Mission Trip 2019 Plans are being made for an Intergenerational Parish Mission Trip of 20 people

ages 16 and older to serve with the Sisters of Our Lady Queen of Africa, in Sumbawanga, Tanzania, Africa from June 17-28, 2019. This immersion experience will offer the chance to serve at the school, orphanage, and clinic. There

will also be an opportunity for a safari and market experiences.

A few highlights from the week with the Sisters:

* Sister Mary Avila had her very first deep fried cheese curd in

Spencer, WI (from A&W, courtesy of Fr. Sedlacek) - and she

loved them ! Plus she also saw a Amish Buggy, for the 1st time.

* For our first year running, we had 18 students attending!

* Did you know? Sisters dry quickly in a water fight, even

when wearing a habit?

* Monday afternoon led to an impromptu nap - the children

wore them out!

* Brats are good for breakfast, per Sister Martin Thérèse

Both Sisters said they would gladly return to Spencer and they

felt they were on a retreat while here

nursing home or moved from one home to another we may lose touch with them. Knowing where they are assures them the

The Marshfield Catholic Cemetery Association has provided a few years now, a beautiful Columbarium @ Gate of Heaven in Mfld. There are still spots available for purchase. A picture of the Columbarium has been placed on main bulletin board in church. The Columbarium is located about 150 feet west of the Queen of Heaven Statue. The niches will be sold on a 1st come, 1st served

basis and the City of Mfld. Sexton, Mike Baltus, will be the person you should contact if interested. Mike’s phone number is: 715-486-2098. The Columbarium hold 92 spaces and niches are available as singles or doubles. A single niche costs $1,130.00, a double costs $2,2690.00, a niche plaque costs $345.00 and the cost for interment is $195.00. For the record, “Columba” is the Latin word for dove and is used frequently in the New Testament to refer to the Holy Spirit. If interested in a traditional burial space, the price per lot is $870.00. This does not include the cost of interment or monument marker.

Recent iTune Gift Card Scam targeting parish staff and parishioners – Stay Alert! We have heard from a number of Catholic dioceses throughout the country that parishioners and staff in their diocese have received emails that claim to be from their parish priest asking that iTunes gift cards be sent to an address of a person in need. We want you to be aware of this particular scam and this general type of scam called spear phishing. These are targeted attacks that collect information from parish websites, bulletins and other public information. Using this information, an email is crafted that appears to be legitimate. Often the forged sender will request that the recipient wire money, send a gift card, or send money in some other form. If you ever receive a request to send money, please verify in person or by calling a previously known phone number for that person. Please do not use a phone number in the email itself to verify the sender’s identity. There are phone scams similar to this as well. If you ever receive a phone call asking for personal information, ask for the person’s name and/or extension and then call back the company they represent (look up the number) and ask for that person. Make sure you find the phone number directly from the company’s website or another legitimate source such as a phone book. Simply Googling the company may give results with fake phone numbers.
