Thus, Jesus one day said to St Teresa: Know that the souls dearest to my Father are those who are afflicted with the greatest sufferings.Hence the saint said that she would not exchange any of her troubles for all the treasures in the world. She appeared after her death to a soul, and revealed to her that she enjoyed an immense reward in heaven. The reward was not so much due for her good works, as for the sufferings she cheerfully bore in this life for the love of God. The saint added that if she could possibly return to the earth, the only reason would be to suffer more for God. (St Anthony M. deLiguori, Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ) *** Some few persons have, at times, the depress- ing sense of being failures in the spiritual life. On oc- casions of retreat and recollection, and sometimes, too, in the midst of their occupations, there comes to them an agonizing sense of having drifted away from God. There is a feeling that Jesus and they move in different worlds with no point of contact. They feel very remote from him, from his thoughts and his ways. The consideration of the barrenness of their lives and of the–apparently–wholly unsupernatural condition of their souls fills them with dismay. Their souls present a sorry sight when examined according to the principles of Christian perfection. These persons have a sense of sinfulness which is more poignant than the actual consciousness of some positive sin. Hateful to themselves, they judge that they must be an object of aversion for the Lord, whose graces they have squandered and whose hopes they have disappointed. Knowing his purity, his holiness, his utter faithfulness to his heavenly Father, they think that the Lord can no longer care for them. They see themselves so utterly different from Jesus in holiness and rectitude of life. They are uneasy in his presence because they fear that he, so pure and so good, must shrink from creatures who are vile, mean and unworthy, as they know themselves to be. Seeing no good in their own souls, they are convinced that they can no longer be an object of regard to Jesus. Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Rev. Canon Olivier Meney Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Oakland

Canon Meney - (510) 604-0391 or [email protected]

YOU ARE AT SAINT MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH HUB OF THE LATIN MASS LITURGY IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Traditional Latin Mass (now called by the Holy Father: Mass in the Extraordinary Form) is brought to you through the ministry of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST?

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the ser-vice of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated.

Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in attracting the human senses to the things above, an integral part of the Institute’s charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity – these are essential elements of the Institute’s spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.

Our motto is “Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically established to aid the priests in their mis-sion through prayer and apostolic work.

The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy.

The Institute serves the faithful of the Bay since 2005 at St. Margaret Mary in Oakland and at Five Wounds in San Jose (Mass at 12:30 pm on Sunday, 12:15 pm on Weekdays but Sat. at 7:30 am)

Love’s Reaction to Loss Inasmuch as psychoneurosis has become such a characteristic of our modern civilization, it is fitting that there be mirrored forth for the example of Chris-tians the story of how one husband lived through its Golgothas and kept his faith in God. Sophie-Charlotte Wittelsbach (1847-1897), at the age of nineteen was betrothed to the King of Ba-varia, who was already beginning to show signs of incipient insanity. The hopes of the young bride for an early marriage were wrecked, time and time again, as her prospective husband put off the marriage, and then, finally, told her that his only love in the world was for Wagnerian music. Her mind, somewhat shat-tered by this blow, found a temporary release when she met an exiled French Orlean, Ferdinand Philip, the Duke of Alencon, whom she married. It was his first love, and his last love as he told her one day: "I have loved you with the most tender affections on this earth, for I love you with an eternal love because it is a Christian love." This declaration of his love was made in the midst of a growing consciousness of her defects. Melancholia, which was one of the fami-ly traits, soon began to appear in her, manifesting it-self in undue sensitiveness, impulsiveness, capri-ciousness and morbidity. The young husband, with a prophetic intuition of her needs, began a passionate and pathetic fight to tear his wife away from the clutches of mental instability and her repeated relaps-es into disturbing psychoses and neuroses. The strug-gle which he faced was one which he confessed would require not only a husband much in love with his wife but also a guardian angel. He tried to intro-duce her to the realities of religion but without much success until he brought her to Rome for a visit, where he saw on an ancient tomb the inscription: "Sophronia may you live." Hundreds of times a day he recited the prayer for his wife, "Sophie may you live." Later on he changed it to an assertion: "Sophie, you shall live." After many years of suffering he said to his wife, in one of her rare moments of lucidity, "I have told you nothing in order not to trouble you, but I have been watching over you in silence. On the day of our marriage God gave you to me, body and soul. If, by chance, you happen to fall I would be the guilty one, for I answer for you and if I had remained not true it would have proven that I did not know how to preserve you." Despite her impossible conduct, her anti-religious outbursts, he never left her side except to visit their children in school. (From Three To Get Married by Fulton Sheen)

Spouse of the Holy Spirit “The Blessed Virgin Mary,” says St. Augus-tine “was the only one who merited to be called the Mother and Spouse” of God. She became the Mother of God because she was the Spouse of the Holy Spirit: “the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee” said the An-gel, explaining the mysterious, divine manner in which she would become a mother, the Mother of the Son of God. At that moment the Holy Spirit, who had already possessed Mary’s soul from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception, came upon her with such exceptional plenitude that He formed within her the sacred Body of Jesus. Justly, therefore, does Mary deserve the name of Spouse of the Holy Spirit: she is His possession, His sanctuary, His temple. The divine Paraclete may well say to her in the words of the Canticle: “My sister, my spouse, is a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed up” (4,12). Mary is a garden enclosed, because she was neve defiled—even for an instant—by the shadow of sin, was never subject to the winds of unruly passions, never taken up with any affection for creatures. “The most glori-ous Virgin, our Lady,” says St. John of the Cross, “never had the form of any creature imprinted on her soul, and was never moved by any creature, but her actions were always inspired by the Holy Spir-it” (Ascent of Mt. Carmel III, 2,10). Filled with grace from her conception, Mary is always the faithful Spouse of the Holy Spirit, attentive and docile to all His impulses and inspirations. If Mary’s sublime privileges are reserved for her alone, we can, nevertheless, imitate her interior dispositions by keeping our heart, in imitation of hers, always attentive and docile to the actions of the Holy Spirit. Complete docility to the motions of the Holy Spirit is precisely the characteristic of the state of un-ion with God. Mary was “raised to this lofty state from the beginning,” according to the teaching of St. John of the Cross.; and this is evident if we consider that Mary was not only created in grace but that she had, from the very beginning, a degree of grace far superior to that attained by the greatest saints at the end of their lives. Therefore, this state of perfect un-ion with God, which is our ideal and the goal of all our efforts, was Mary’s portion from the dawn of life. Furthermore, by her free, faithful correspondence to grace, she advanced to towering heights in this lofty state. (From Divine Intimacy by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene, OCD)

Visit of Sister Adorers of the Royal Heart of Jesus

For the first time in the history of their foundation, the sisters are making a grand tour of the American Apos-tolates of the Institute of Christ the King.

The sisters are lead-ing a non-cloistered contemplative life and dedicate them-selves to praying for priests. They are a revival of the sisters of the Visitation (founded by Saint Francis de Sales - the Community of Saint Marga-ret Mary) of which their habit is inspired. You will see the striking resemblance of Mother Caroline and our statue of St.

Margaret Mary in church.

We have the joy to receive two of the sis-ters: mother superior, Mother Caroline-Marie of the Trinity and her assistant Soeur Made-leine - Marie de St Joseph, Gardien du Coeur Royal.
