Project description Students of Technical University of Denmark, advised by professors and industry partners, formed Team DTU to create an innovative plus-energy house project and participate in an international competition Solar Decathlon Europe 2012. OUR MISSION is to provide energy-efficient solutions for housing issues through integrating design and existing technologies in combination with improved aesthetical appearance and comfort. Team DTU is participating in the international competition Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 with its project named FOLD. This is a house designed by the students at the Technical University of Denmark with the support from the professors and faculty supervisors, sponsors and other partners. This is a PLUS-ENERGY house, which means that it produces solar energy both for itself and for the society. FOLD is an innovative solution that brings together energy efficiency, solar energy use and enhanced living comfort. FOLD project proves that living sustainably and using energy-efficient solutions is also comfortable and enjoyable – this is the future of housing. A space for living that embraces the nature and urban surroundings and engages in a natural interaction with them is what we want to achieve. Since February 2011 Team DTU has been working on developing its project for the Solar Decathlon Europe competition. In December 2011 a mock-up representing part of FOLD was built, and it was presented to public on January 16th, 2012. In April and May 2012 the house itself was constructed at the campus of the Technical University of Denmark, and Team DTU celebrated the completion of the main house structure on May 14th 2012. Since then the work is focused on installing all the planned equipment in FOLD and decorating it according to the interior designs prepared by the students. One of the crucial parts – the solar panels – will also be installed in May. Topping out ceremony and transporting FOLD to Madrid The topping out ceremony is planned for June 13th 2012. The event will be open to public, and press representatives will be invited to attend the event. The so-called Rejsegilde, as this celebration is called in Danish, will be headed by the minister of energy, climate and buildings Martin Lidegaard. This is an important milestone for the team and the university, as it marks the accomplishment of the time and effort invested from all those involved in the project. After the celebration FOLD will go through series of tests to make sure that all systems are working providing a comfortanble and enjoyable experience of living in this innovative house. In July FOLD will be disassembled and sent to Madrid in order to be assembled again for the competition phase at Villa Solar in September 2012. The competition site will be open from September 14th to September 30th 2012 in Casa de Campo, Madrid.

Key recent events

April 27th 2012: Presenting FOLD to HM The Queen Margrethe II

On April 27th, the Technical University of Denmark held its annual celebration honoring the attainment of

doctoral academic level and presenting awards for other academic achievements. The celebration, Årsfest,

gathered over 4,000 visitors, including Her Majesty The Queen Margrethe II, a number of ambassadors,

students and staff from DTU.

The Project Manager of Team DTU, Ulrik Eggert Knuth-Winterfeldt, was invited to present FOLD during

the reception held by the President of DTU Anders Bjarklev. We are excited to tell that HM The Queen

showed interest in the project, and had many questions and creative suggestions during the presentation of

FOLD. Receiving attention from HM The Queen and presenting the project to the guests of Årsfest is an

inspiring experience for the team and it shows that Solar Decathlon is a project that is important for the

future of sustainable housing and renewable energy use.

March 8th 2012: Morten Østergaard visits FOLD

Morten Østergaard, the minister for research, innovation and higher education in Denmark visited FOLD

mock-up on March 8th. The minister came together with other officials to see the FOLD mock-up and speak

with the students about the competition and what the participation in the project means for them.

The main discussions were focused on the geometry challenges and on the particular objecticves of the

project. Team members highlighted that perfection in construction itself is not the core of the team’s work.

This area is very well developed, and team has always a vast pool of accumulated experiences to build on

when it comes to understanding certain possibilities of constructing elements of the house. FOLD is about

the innovative design and architecture, the creative view on the house of the future. Energy crisis that the

world is approaching creates the need for rethinking the whole approach to design and architecture that will

enable both excelling in energy-efficiency and in active use of renewable energy sources. Thus FOLD is a

prototype for new way of thinking about a living space of the future: comfortable, aesthetic and energy-

efficient.

The concept of FOLD FOLD is naive… and realistic. It believes in the utopia of a greener world. A world of responsibility. For the nature AND for the culture. Culture is the utmost offspring from nature. And like every responsible parent nature EMBRACES culture. It provides it with its resources. To benefit the most from nature culture has to TUNE into the premises of nature. Adapt. Adjust. Reenact. Play with its parental heritage. Growing up, learning from the nature and developing beyond it makes it a strong person. A responsible person. Sometimes an annoying overachiever. But when it comes down to basic value it always keeps its head cold and remembers its childhood learning: always SHARE the good stuff with your friends. FOLD is a house that took its shape from a FOLDED rectangular paper – a creative idea originating from the intensive brainstorming sessions of Team DTU in June 2011. This house has a SPACIOUS and NON-LINEAR structure that allows it to be flexible depending on the locality where it will be situated: the angle of the folding elements can be altered to allow for the maximum exposure of the solar cells towards the sun and as such improved energy-efficiency. At the center of the house is the TECHNICAL CORE, which contains all the technical installations and serves as the lungs of the house. It is not a part of the FOLD itself, and it is visually emphasized both from the inside and the outside the house. FOLD contains one bright and big room, and the existence of the core brings gravity into this space. The BALANCE of the floating space inside and the heavy and concentrated core gives a UNIQUE feeling and expression to FOLD. FOLD is a house that EMBRACES its inhabitants, surroundings and the resources available naturally, such as solar energy. FOLD becomes a natural and harmonic part of its surroundings, it is made to interact with surroundings and TUNE itself accordingly. Its design enables changing the structure depending on the geographical location where it will be placed. FOLD is producing energy. But not only for itself, is wants to SHARE with the community and give as much as it can.

Team DTU film To communicate our holistic approach to building design, a well-established Danish film company

FILMBUREAUET is making a film about the process of participation in the competition, thanks to the

sponsoring by REALDANIA. The concept of the film is to present the general storyline – Team DTU

designing and building FOLD to participate in Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 – along with the three core

concepts of sustainability as the subcases within the story.

The stories within the film will speak about the social, economic and energy issues of sustainable housing.

Each of the topics will be told through interviews with the team members directly working in those areas for

FOLD. The social aspects relate to architecture and design of the house: it is an essential element of life of its

inhabitants, making it a social place affecting the well-being of people and their comfort. Use of renewable

energy is the sustainable future for housing, and the economic aspects of making it affordable and financially

viable is crucial.

The filming has already started, and the 35-minute final version of the film is expected to be released in

December 2012. But before the final release we will present the screening of three sustainability cases during

the competition phase in VILLA SOLAR, Madrid on September 14th – 30th 2012.
