Lutheran Pretzels So, did you known National Pretzel Day is on April 26? There are several accounts of the origin of the pretzel, but most people agree that it does have a Christian background. Stop by the Pretzel Booth and learn about the origins of the pretzel. Join bakers Pastor William Weidenbach and Pastor Marilyn Hanson in baking your own pretzels in celebration of the Lutheran Reformation.

Luther’s Door

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Cast le Church in Wittenberg . Pastor Kim Lee-Brown is making and bringing a full sized door upon which

participants can post mat ters of faith and church life they would like to see discussed and debated by the church. The door will also have a copy of Martin Luther's 95 Theses on it.

Luther’s Seal Luther’s Seal (also called Luther’s Rose) is widely recognized as a symbol for Lutheranism. In 1530, John Frederick of Saxony, requested that such a symbol be designed and produced as a visible expression and summary of Luther’s theology. The emblem was simply produced, presented to Luther for his comments as to whether or not it served to express his theology and faith. Luther responded in a letter to Lazarus Spengler, dated July 8, 1530: “Grace and

peace from the Lord. As you desire to know whether my painted seal, which you sent to me, has hit the mark, I shall answer most amiably and tell you my original thoughts and reason about why my seal is a symbol of my theology. The first should be a black cross in a heart, which retains its natural color, so that I myself would be reminded that faith in the Crucified

saves us. ‘For one who believes from the heart will be justified’ (Romans 10:10).

Using a simplified “Printing Press” you will have the opportunity to press print an inked copy of Luther’s seal as a keepsake to take home with you. Pastor Tim Kenyon will assist you.

Refreshments

Lemonade, coffee, and cookies will be served.

Luther's Seal

Craft Project Did you know the colors in Luther's Seal tell us about Lutheran beliefs? Members of St. John's Mendota and Pastor Janet Lepp will help participants make a Luther's Seal to take home as they learn what it all means.

Hymns of Luther Martin Luther was an avid hymn writer. Under the music leadership of Pastor Kris Zierke the participants will have a chance to look at (and to also sing) some of Martin Luther’s hymns from A Mighty Fortress is Our God to Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God — not the result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
