M A N N Y P U I G

AND HIS PASSION FOR ADVENTURE Exclusive Interview by Pedro Diaz

Photos José A. Fernández Manny Puig, the Tarzan of the Seas or the Crocodile Man as he is called, is a connoisseur of wildlife, from hand to hand encounters with crocodiles (lizards Americans), sharks, poisonous snakes, bears and all sorts of dangerous animal . “I like everything wild, hunting and fishing with your hands or with a spear” Manny starts saying. “My preference is to catch a crocodile, upload it up and release it. It is a constant encounter with dangerous animals of nature, like a shark that big fish, a poisonous snake or a bear. I like to test myself with those wild animals and escape unscathed. “

Page 7: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

When did you develop a passion of being an adventurous hunter constantly facing danger? “From the age of four hands I clutched lizards, crabs and frogs. I saw Tarzan films and Indians. I always liked to get under the water and in the jungle. I was not interested any other sport. I like to go to the wild, fighting with a crocodile (American alligator) or a shark. I like to hunt and fish so far with much risk and adventure. I perform with spear hunting test myself against wild animal. I have to use my intelligence and physical ability and have the blessing of God to not die. “

Page 8: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

On how many occasions have you been at risk of losing your life facing wild animals? “I can not count the times I’ve played life. When I dive into the water I know it’s a big risk for me hands grab a shark or a crocodile (American alligator). Wild animals are fierce and trying to survive and even kill each other, such as bears that kill puppies. That’s a violent world. They survive on his fury, his intelligence and his ability to kill. Before I made my living with spearfishing, I am now starring in TV shows on Outdoor Channel (Savage Wild), Animal Planet, Discovery, Spanish Television, Univision 23, Telemundo, MTV and many other American television programs. The same on a hunting channel that science, explaining the behavior of wildlife, with a different theme. I have a unique style to capture the crocodile with his hands underneath and I compete with myself. I like to have freedom in the jungle to do whatever I want “says Manny.

Page 9: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

Manny Puig lectures in schools. “I like to answer people’s concerns any questions. I work from Hawaii, New York, California and Alaska, where I swam with bears and killer whales. Sometimes I nearly lost his life to a bear running at me, he suddenly stopped and has forgiven me. I know working with venomous snakes. “

Do you think living up to the rest of your days being a hunter adventurer in extreme danger? “I live day to day and not think about the future. Each day a different adventure plan. I also do sculptures of wild animals I’ve captured. I like to do artwork animal I know, especially those who admire for their physical abilities and intelligence. I build steel spears and bronze sculptures. I’m a hunter, fisherman, adventurer and artist, but always the same issue of wildlife. If someone wants to learn what I do I recommend that this is a very dangerous job, in which life can lose an arm or a leg. “Says Manny finally.

Page 10: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

José A. Fernandez, his personal photographer, says: Manny has the ability to understand the behavior of wild and dangerous animals like few others. When he enters the wild world, especially water, Manny can tell which is the alpha animal (the leader) and he is presented to the animal as an animal alpha too, which respects the animal immediately. This knowledge is used to dominate and convince Manny to the animal, showing that their presence is superior. The fight with the animal and aggressive attitude changed immediately. He did it with sharks, alligators (crocodiles Americans) and wild bears. “

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef By Dr. Martín Aróstegui

Travel and Exploration Director of Sol y Mar Magazine It is spring in Australia and as the ocean waters warm, conditions become perfect for the corals of the Great Barrier Reef to start a mass spawn that will guarantee the survival of the world’s largest reef system. The coral polyps produce an exoskeleton of calcium carbonate which gives rise to the beautiful reef structures that are home to a multitude of marine species. The Great Barrier Reef system is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometers. The Great Barrier Reef was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981 for its beauty and importance to Australia. It is estimated that over two million people visit the reef each year and contribute over 5 billion dollars to the economy of the country.

Page 23: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

The Great Barrier Reef supports over 1500 species of fish, thirty species of whales and dolphins, six species of sea turtles and many species of sea grasses and marine invertebrates. In recent years the reef systems of Australia have become threatened by a number of factors. Climate change, man made water pollution, over fishing, over population of the crown of thorns starfish, shipping accidents and oil spills are all factors that are affecting the reef. The government of Australia has passed many laws in order to protect the reef and has established many Marine Parks where all living organisms are protected from harvest in order to protect the marine environment in a way similar to what we do in our National Parks on land. On a recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef we had the opportunity to dive in this magnificent place. We will always remember the beauty of the corals, the abundance of sea life and the crystal clear waters of this ocean paradise.

BBGC Wahoo Tournament 2013 RESULTS FINAL

By John Bell

Hemingway, Playboy, running with the bulls (sharks that is), seaplane landings and takeoffs, a sunset serenade with country artist Craig Morgan and 3,400 pounds of wahoo made for one of The Bahamas’ most intriguing tournaments in recent memory. The eclectic scene was staged at the historic Bimini Big Game Club Feb. 21-23 as part of the Wahoo Smackdown II Tournament that attracted 22 teams, more than 100 Anglers and 132 wahoo caught during the two-day tournament. Taking home over $7,500 in cash and prizes for top team (334.7 pounds of wahoo) and largest catch

Joan Vernon to Join IGFA Angling Hall of Fame!

Joan Vernon, founder and director of the Presidential Challenge Charitable Foundation and the Presidential Challenge Conservation Series, will be among the five 2013 inductees in the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame. Joan started saltwater fishing when she was just nine years old, fishing for trout, redfish and snook in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, also spending quite a bit of time in Marathon and the Florida Keys. She was brought up on the water and has been around boats for as long as she can remember. “My first love is light tackle fishing, no matter what type of rod or reel. It is not the weight of the fish but the challenge of catching it on light line and artificial lures that is my interest,” she says. “I began fishing in Flamingo, Costa Rica, in 1981 and have fished the Flamingo/Carrillo area since that time, building a second home in Carrillo about five years ago.”

Page 59: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

In 1996 she founded the Presidential Challenge of Central America, a series of tournaments benefiting conservation and promoting tour-ism in Central America and the Caribbean. The primary goal of the PCCA is to promote the sport fishing industry in these regions by working with the governments of the involved countries to promote game fish conservation. Joan is also a past Chairman of The Billfish Foundation and is just as passionate about conservation as she is about her light-tackle angling. In 1999, the Presidential Challenge Series became the first fishing tournaments in the world to require the use of circle hooks in competition. These days Joan can be found tirelessly promoting the four events that comprise the Presidential Challenge, along with remaining an ardent supporter of conservation efforts around the world. In her rare off moments she still enjoys light-tackle angling for a variety of game fish, both inshore and offshore. The IGFA’s 15th Annual Fishing Hall of Fame Induction will take place October 29, 2013 at the IGFA World Headquarters in Dania Beach, FL. Tickets are $225 and table packages are available. For more information, contact John Holley at the IGFA at 954-924-4240 or via email, [email protected]

The Plight of the African ElephantBy Dr. Martín Aróstegui

Travel and Exploration Director of Sol y Mar Magazine

Elephants have roamed the African savannas for millions of years. As one of the largest land animals of the African continent, elephants have very few natural enemies. They roam in large herds dominated by older females that provide leadership and teach the younger members of the group. They live long lives and have strong family bonds.

Page 63: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

This scenario has changed in the last few decades by the presence of they main predator, Man. These magnificent animals have been the subjects of heavy poaching in many parts of Africa due to the value of their tusks. Elephant tusks are made of ivory, which is highly priced for carving figurines and other objects primarily in the Orient.

Ivory carvings are popular all over the world. Many attempts to stem the flow of illegal ivory from Africa have not been successful primarily because the high price of illegal ivory. Currently, one pound of ivory may sell for more than one thousand dollars in the black market. At this price, the incentive for poaching is great.

Most of the illegal ivory is smuggled into Thailand and China. Both of these countries have legal trade in ivory and many carving shops. The number of pounds of ivory carved far exceeds the amount of truly legal ivory available from elephants that die of natural causes; the poaching

Page 64: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

and smuggling of elephant tusks from Africa obtain the balance.

It is estimated that as many as 20,000 elephants are illegally killed in Africa every year to supply the demands for ivory carvings. At this rate, it won’t be long before the magnificent African elephant becomes an endangered species.

Many conservation organizations feel that the only way to save the elephants is to outlaw the sale of ivory entirely.

During my visits to Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia, I was able to observe these magnificent animals up close. The photographs that follow were taken during these visits. Let’s hope that the counties involved in the ivory trade see the wisdom of taking the necessary measures to save the African elephant.

Cuban Sport FiShermen From both SideS oF the GulF Stream make anGlinG hiStory in Cuba

By Dr. Martín Aróstegui

recently i had the opportunity to travel to Cuba as a representative of the international Game Fish association to participate in a number of conferences designed to facilitate the conversion of the ernest hemingway international billfishing tournament to the use of circle hooks. Circle hooks are extremely important in the catch and release of all billfish because they minimize the damage done to fish in the hooking process. as a result, fish caught on circle hooks

Page 79: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

will survive the capture and release in a large percentage of releases. during the week i had the opportunity to meet with all the captains and crews involved in the tournament and discuss the methods of preparing baits, rigging and hooking fish using circle hooks. i also met with all tournament officials to discuss strategy for the conversion and further plans for conducting workshops with all anglers prior to the tournament. these workshops will be conducted by the international Game Fish association at the historic Club nautico internacional hemingway de Cuba.

Page 80: Sol y Mar Magazine 19. May - June 2013

on the last day of my visit i was invited by Jose ramon Cuza delgado, president of the Federation of Cuban Sport Fishermen to fish in the hatiguanico river. on this fishing trip Jose ramon and i were able to accomplish something never done before. We both caught a potential world record african Sharptooth Catfish on fly.if the international Game Fish association grants these records, it will be the very first time that a Cuban angler catches a world record fish in Cuban waters and the first fresh water records ever entered from Cuban waters.i am extremely proud of the fact that two Cuban sport fishermen from different sides of the Gulf Steam were able to reunite and accomplish something never done before in a spirit of friendship and cooperation.

MASTRY SPONSORSHIP FOR KING OF THE BEACH HITS 20 YEARS

As the Old Salt Fishing Foundation primes for its 20th anniversary King of the Beach Fishing Tournament, Mastry Engine Center has stood behind it every step of the way. To be held April 25-27 in Madeira Beach, Florida, the tournament benefits local charities. Mastry serves as a platinum sponsor and will also donate an 8 hp Mercury 4-stroke outboard as a prize. This year’s King of the Beach boasts a $20,000 first place prize with overall payouts estimated at $80,000. It’s the largest King and Spanish Mackerel tournament on Florida’s West Coast. As part of the event’s 20th anniversary, Mastry’s engine donation will be given to the angler weighing in with a fish closest to 20 lbs. King of the Beach also weaves a food festival, live music, kid’s activities, local vendors and a boat show into one spectacular event, drawing more than 10,000 competitors and supporters.

“It’s fantastic to see how King of the Beach has grown over the years, and we’re proud to have been a sponsor since the beginning. The community support of this event is amazing. Many of our customers participate in King of the Beach, and Old Salt is a great organization,” said Brent Magsig of Mastry Engine Center.

“We couldn’t host an event of this size, nor be able to contribute to local charities, without the help of our sponsors and participating anglers.

Mastry is like family to us, and we appreciate their generous company participation as a platinum sponsor of King of the Beach. The engine donation is also a fun way to reward a participant who doesn’t land that first-place contender fish,” said Tom Verdensky, Old Salt

president and tournament director. Community charities benefitting from the 2013 King of the Beach tournament include The Children’s Dream Fund for children with life-threatening illnesses; P.A.R.C. which provides opportunities for those with developmental disabilities; and the Teen Arts, Sports, and Cultural Opportunities organization. The all-volunteer Old Salt Fishing Foundation was founded more than 40 years ago to aid local oceanographic and scientific studies. 3In the event of an engine room fire, once the fire suppression system is engaged it’s critical that engines, generators and fans are shut down quickly. This both minimizes damage to equipment and helps contain the extinguishing agent within the compartment it’s protecting. The ESRS Engine Shutdown

System from Sea-Fire automates this procedure using microprocessor technology, in a simple plug and play design.

ABYC requires automatic equipment shutdown if there is more than one air change per minute within the engine compartment. Sea-Fire recommends that all diesel engine applications be protected by an automatic engine shutdown system.

4 HAPPY TROLLER PLATE MAKES AN-GLERS SMILE

Slowing to optimum trolling speed no longer requires a trolling motor, hard-to-retrieve drag buckets or line-tangling drift socks. By blocking part of a prop’s thrust with an aluminum plate, Happy Troller from Davis Instruments slows down even large engines. Mounted on an outboard or sterndrive’s anti-cavitation plate, Happy Troller locks down behind the prop by simply pulling a cable. It enables trolling at a slightly higher rpm, helping to avoid the carbon fouling on spark plugs that can occur from extended low rpm engine operation. In the up position, Happy Troller acts as a stabilizer. On bow-light boats, it smoothes out the ride in rough water. It also reduces purposing and propeller cavitation. www.davisnet.com

5 HIGH-TECH GYRO ENSURES SMOOTH CRUISING ON OVATION YACHTS

As soon as Jim McLaren, general manager of Orange Coast Yachts in Newport Beach, California, came across the Seakeeper Gyro Stabilization System at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last year, he knew he had to have it. As a result, McLaren made sure the very first 52 Ovation he ordered from Silverton Marine of Millville, New Jersey for his dealership had the state-of-the-art gyro installed.

We tested the Seakeeper Gyro just outside the entrance of Newport Harbor where there are 3’ swells,” said McLaren. “The Ovation was incredibly stable, even at a complete stop. We could have sat there as long as we wanted. The boat didn’t rock at all.” Designed for craft up to 60’ in length and/or 60,000 lbs. displacement, the Seakeeper Model 7000 Gyro weighs significantly less and has much lower power consumption than comparative products. Larger craft are fitted with multiple units. The compact gyro can be installed as a boat is being built or retrofitted into an existing vessel. www.seakeeper.com

6 TORQEEDO POWERS INFLATABLE SEA EAGLE TENDER

After 43 years in the marine industry, Sea Eagle co-owner Cecil Hoge has pretty much seen it all. But, as a supporter of electric propulsion, he can’t wait to see what comes next. Taking his own line of boats into the future, Hoge recently introduced a new inflatable yacht tender, 10.6 SRRIK, powered by a Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric motor and Power Film solar panel. “Electric motors are quiet and the best part is you don’t have to deal with gasoline,” said Hoge. “We’ve been a Torqeedo dealer for over two years and they’re the only electric motor company to produce useful propulsion. Many electric motors on the market today can’t even move through tides or strong winds. Torqeedo stands alone in the electric propulsion market,” said Hoge. “They have no competition.”

The new Sea Eagle 10.6 SRRIK features a drop stitch floor, patent-pending drop-stitch outside keel and weighs only 93 lbs. www.seaeagle.com

They are charging hard again offshore Bimini and the historic Big Game Club Resort & Marina is putting out the call for teams to compete in the upcoming Billfish Bonanza tournament. Following two recent, highly successful Wahoo tournaments, in which over 10 dozen anglers hauled in nearly three tons of fish, Billfish will be on the hook for May 15-18 for what should prove to again be a memorable outing. “Considering our last tournament in February, we have a lot to live up to”, smiled Big Game General Manager Michael Weber.

The Bimini Smackdown II Wahoo tournament brought together 22 boats over 100 anglers in a fun-filled weekend that featured plenty of Wahoo action, a Playboy Playmate, Ernest Hemingway¹s grandson, country music artist and outdoor TV show host Craig Morgan and the launch of the world¹s first, at-the-dock shark experience‹Bimini Bull Run. Weber said the entry fee for the upcoming billfish tournament will be an affordable, $1,450 per boat, which includes four anglers per boat, events, prize money and giveaways. Hero dog saves drowning girl by diving into river

By Teresa de LeónExpert Behaviorist & Trainer

A dog has been praised for its bravery after it helped rescue a girl that was drowning.

One of the heroes, Mr Shaw, added: “We looked down to see one young girl floating in the river and her sister trying to pull her out. We tried to yell to them to hang onto the ice and stay where they were if they could.”

Rocky the dog jumped into a river to save nine-year-old Samara Sunshine, who was being dragged under by currents. The young girl was able to grab onto the super dog’s leash and the two made their way to the safety as Rocky’s owner Adam Shaw pulled the girl out of the water.

Mr Shaw had already managed to save the girl’s sister Krymzen, 10, after the two got into trouble while sledding.

They had fallen into the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Canada.

“I’m very grateful for Adam Shaw and his dog,’ the girls” father Cory Sunshine said.

My girls are safe and sound. He is truly our angel.
