ACCOUNTING SERVICES RESTAURANTS EVENTS CAFES, BARS & CLUBS RESTAURANTS RESTAURANTS RESTAURANTS RESTAURANTS RESTAURANTS CAFES, BARS & CLUBS Sofia’s city centre is packed with restaurants, bistros, cafes of all kinds and for all pockets. In a bid to beat the financial crisis, most restaurants now offer daily lunch specials at very competitive rates, so if you are on a budget but still enjoy eating out – now is your chance to try some of the better restaurants. Worth bearing in mind: tips should be roughly 10% of the bill. Do check to make sure a service charge hasn’t already been added. There is some confusion as to what order to serve meals in: make it clear when you order when you would like to receive your food.Check whether your meal comes with garnitura (side dish) or whether you need to order it separately. Food tends to be served warm, rather than piping hot. B GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS Traditional souvenirs from Bulgaria can be found at souvenir shops close to the tourist attractions: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and in the underpass between the Presidency and Council of Ministers. If you want something a little more individual there are now many craft shops selling unique items by local art- ists that are no more expensive than the mass-produced souvenirs. Take a walk around Shishman and Aksakov streets (behind the Radisson hotel) where there are many shops selling alternative gifts and locally produced items. The other area to head to is the so-called ‘small 5 corners’ where 6th September, Han Krum and Neofit Rilski streets meet. There are so many quirky little cafes and restau- rants here that you’re bound to want to stop for a snack as well. ALEXANDER NEVSKY FLEA MARKET Outdoor antiques flea market on the same square as Alexander Nevsky cathe- dral and Sveta Sofia church. All kinds of bric a brac is to be found, from badges and metal signs from the Soviet period to amateurish works of art, fake Mont- blanc pens and more. All tourists trail through here. There is also a separate area where old ladies sell lace and knitted socks. You are expected to haggle if you want to buy anything. QC-4, pl. Alexander Nevsky. Open 10:00 – 22:00. MARKETS Use the markets for fresh produce if you are self-catering but also as an insight into the nation’s habits. Each market has its own traditions and character, some being quite upmarket and selling exotic fruits and veg, others almost oriental in character. ZHENSKI PAZAR Situated behind ‘Halite’ and close to the Synagogue and Banya Bashi Mosque, Zhenski Pazar (Ladies’ Market) is probably the biggest market in Sofia and until recently a delight for bargain hunters or those seeking the exotic. Its recent makeover has removed some of it’s initial appeal, although you can still find authentic Arabic and Chinese products in the surrounding streets, including Halal meat. Take a walk down here as part of your tour of this part of town but do keep your bag tightly shut and beware of pickpockets. QB-3, bul. Stefan Stambolov, MLavov Most. Cafes, bars & Clubsrestaurants restaurants restaurantsrestaurantsrestaurants Cafes, bars & ClubsSofia’s city centre is packed with restaurants, bistros, cafes of all kinds and for all pockets.

GiFts and soUvEnirsTraditional souvenirs from Bulgaria can be found at souvenir shops close to the tourist attractions: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and in the underpass between the Presidency and Council of Ministers. If you want something a little more individual there are now many craft shops selling unique items by local art-ists that are no more expensive than the mass-produced souvenirs. Take a walk around Shishman and Aksakov streets (behind the Radisson hotel) where there are many shops selling alternative gifts and locally produced items. The other area to head to is the so-called ‘small 5 corners’ where 6th September, Han Krum and Neofit Rilski streets meet. There are so many quirky little cafes and restau-rants here that you’re bound to want to stop for a snack as well.alexanDer nevSkY flea marketOutdoor antiques flea market on the same square as Alexander Nevsky cathe-dral and Sveta Sofia church. There is also a separate area where old ladies sell lace and knitted socks. You are expected to haggle if you want to buy anything.QC-4, pl. alexander nevsky. Open 10:00 – 22:00.

markEts Use the markets for fresh produce if you are self-catering but also as an insight into the nation’s habits. Each market has its own traditions and character, some being quite upmarket and selling exotic fruits and veg, others almost oriental in character.zhenSki pazarSituated behind ‘Halite’ and close to the Synagogue and Banya Bashi Mosque, Zhenski Pazar (Ladies’ Market) is probably the biggest market in Sofia and until recently a delight for bargain hunters or those seeking the exotic. Its recent makeover has removed some of it’s initial appeal, although you can still find authentic Arabic and Chinese products in the surrounding streets, including Halal meat. Take a walk down here as part of your tour of this part of town but do keep your bag tightly shut and beware of pickpockets.QB-3, bul. stefan stambolov, MLavov Most.

Apart from a small skylight, which is now blocked, there is no natural daylight inside. The national hero, Vasil Levski, is said to have been buried here after been hanged by the Ottoman rulers and a bronze plaque on the wall commemorates that, though there is no proof that his remains lie here.QC-3, bul.
