SoE Robotic Team Grabs the First Place atInternational CDIO Academy Competition in Japan

A team guided by Dr. Phang Swee King has won the first place in the International CDIO Academy

Competition held in Kanazawa, Japan. The winning team was led by a Taylor’s University

undergraduate student, Mr. Wynton Lee and four other student members from China, Vietnam,

Thailand and Denmark. The theme of the competition is about automation of drones in delivering

goods. The competition was held in conjunction with the 14th International CDIO Conference in

Kanazawa from 28 June 2018 to 2 July 2018.

Mr. Praveen Edward James, a PhD student

who is supervised by Dr. Mun Hou Kit from

SoE, presented his paper ‘Performance

evaluation of a LSTM-HMM-based speech

recognition system’ at the First

International Conference on Computer

Science and Information Technology

(ICCSIT2018)  held at  Kuala Lumpur  on

19–20 March 2018. This paper is related to

speech recognition which is one of the

latest trends in machine learning.

Dr. Aravind CV gave a presentation on ‘Sci-engineering: Known Sciences, Unknown engineering-

Bridging them for Future’ at the VIT University, Vellore on 12 June 2018. The discussion covered the

innovative design projects developed at Taylor’s University inspired by fundamental sciences for the

bachelor and master’s degree students in engineering. This presentation is followed by a meeting on

integrated postgraduate studies with Taylor’s University with the follow-up process currently in

progress.

Guest Lecture at VEL Tech University and Bannari Amman Institute of Technology

Dr. Aravind CV gave a talk on ‘Colours of the Brain’ at

the VEL Tech University, Chennai, India on 14 June

2018. The presentation covered design thinking with

emotional intelligence and future research projects.

Later he gave a lecture on ‘Disruptive Technologies’ at

the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology,

Sathyamangalam, India on 18 June 2018. The

presentation covered the next-century disruptive

technologies and methods of realigning research

activities towards these disruptive technologies.

10th International EngineeringResearch Conference 2018

The 10th International Engineering Research Conference 2018 (10th EURECA 2018) was held at

Taylor’s University on 27 June 2018. This biannual event, organised by the staff of SoE was first held

in 2013 mainly for the final-year project students of the school to experience a research conference

environment. Over the years, this conference have grown and now welcomes undergraduates,

postgraduates and experienced researchers from Malaysia and abroad to come together and

exchange ideas with each other. In conjunction with the 10th EURECA 2018, the First International

Meeting on Sustainable Urbanisation was held and designed to be a discussion venue for various

experts to deliberate over certain themed topics.

Welcoming Dr. Yong to Our Proud Familyof Chartered Engineers

Dr. Yong Leng Chuan from the Mechanical Engineering Programme at SoE has recently been elected as a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, United Kingdom, which quali�ed her to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Dr. Yong Leng Chuan graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science from the National University of Malaysia in 2006 before advancing her study in Materials Science and obtained her PhD in Engineering in 2013. She has worked in the industry as a research and development engineer, before joining SoE as a full-time lecturer in 2013.

Dr. Yong Leng Chuan is an expert in 3D printing, fabrication methods of tissue engineering sca�olds and biomaterials. Moreover, she has penned several academic books and published extensively in multiple international journals, including those with high impact factors. Her passions include reading books, sewing, embroidery and gardening.
