From the ChairWelcome to the inaugural issue of Ohio State Sociology News! We are an intellectual community of 33 dis-tinguished faculty, over 100 graduate students, and over 1,000 undergraduate majors, all supported by 13 able and dedicated staff members. Our department is proud of its commitment to excellence in scholarship and instruction, which is reflected by our ranking as a top 20 department nationwide. We recently received recognition as the nation’s #1 department in terms of articles published in the top three journals of the discipline. We put students first by providing first-class instruction and research opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate students. We were recently targeted for special investment by the provost for our excellence in Population and Health, which has allowed us to add three new faculty in the past two years.

During the summer of 2008, we will be moving to our new offices in Townshend Hall. This is an historic building—the third building on the Ohio State campus, which we will rededicate during the 2008-09 academic year. Look forward to more news about that event. (Townshend is located next to the Thompson Library and the Recreation and Physical Activity Center.)

Faculty NewsAngelo Alonzo, Associate Professor, was approved to carry the esteemed title of Emeritus Professor and has moved to Yale University to become a research scientist in the School of Nursing.

Claudia Buchmann, Associate Professor, was elected chair of the Sociology of Education Section of the American Sociological Association.

John Casterline, Professor, joined the faculty and became the fifth holder of the Robert T. Lazarus Chair in Population Studies. He is internationally known for his work on fertility, demographic transition, and the demography of low-income countries.

Cynthia Colen, Assistant Professor, joined the faculty after completing her PhD at the University of Michigan and being a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow at Columbia University. Her research focuses on social disparities in health.

Doug Downey, Professor, was awarded the 2007 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the most prestigious award for teaching at Ohio State.

Korie Edwards, Assistant Professor, was keynote speaker at the 2006 Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly.

Randy Hodson, Professor, was awarded the 2007 University Distinguished Scholar Award, the most prestigious award given to a senior scholar at Ohio State.

Randy Hodson and Vinnie Roscigno became editors of the American Sociological Review, the top journal in the discipline.

Robert Kaufman, Professor, was appointed associate dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State.

Laurie Krivo, Professor, and Ruth Peterson, Professor, were awarded the Julius Debro Award from the Division on People of Color and Crime of the American Society of Criminology for their commitment to professional organizations and academic institutions that advance criminal justice.

Steve Lopez, Assistant Professor, received the Citation of Excellence from Emerald Reviews for his paper

“Emotional Labor and Organized Emotional Care: Conceptualizing Nursing Home Care Work.”

Pamela Paxton, Associate Professor, received the 2006 Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women in Politics.

Zhenchao Qian, Professor, received extensive media coverage for his research on the decline of cross-cultural marriage rates.

Vinnie Roscigno, Professor, was named the 2006 Joan Huber Faculty Fellow by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences for his excellence in research and teaching.

Kammi Schmeer, Assistant Professor, joined the faculty after completing her PhD at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on health and status inequalities.

Kristi Williams, Assistant Professor, and doctoral student Adrianne Frech received widespread media attention for their research on the psychological benefits of marriage.

Graduate Student Newsjimi adams was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship through Columbia University’s Health and Society Scholars Program, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Stacy Armour and Dana Haynie got major media coverage of their article on early sex and delinquency.

Donna Bobbitt-Zeher was awarded an American Educational Research Association Dissertation Fellowship. Her paper received the best paper award from the Section on Education of the ASA.

Julia Cantzler received an NSF Dissertation Improvement Award.

Dan Carlson received the best paper award from the ASA Section on Aging and the Life Course.

Lisa Garoutte received an NSF Doctoral Research Award.

Melanie Hughes received an NSF Dissertation Improvement Grant.

Diana Karafin received a HUD Dissertation Grant.

Lisa Nicholson received an NIH Health Services Research Dissertation Award.

Dan Tope received the Braverman Award from the Labor Section of the Scientific Study of Social Problems.

Paul von Hippel received the Clifford Clogg Award for the best paper on methodology from the Sociology of Education Section of ASA.

Undergraduate NewsThe department has over 1,000 sociology and criminology majors, making us one of the most popular programs on campus.

Minority students in our sociology and criminology majors are currently 16% of all majors, which far surpasses the university’s overall minority enrollment.

Victoria Reyes was awarded a 2006 Fulbright Scholarship to continue her research in the Philippines. She is interviewing Filipina women in relationships with U.S. military personnel to understand how their migration beliefs influence their subsequent unions.

Peter (Jake) Snoble (Criminology) and Amanda Smith (Sociology) were selected as 2007 Outstanding Seniors. Both will pursue law degrees. Jon Davis (Sociology) was one of a handful of students admitted to the prestigious University of Southern California Law School.

Department News Honorary Doctorate of Social Science Archibald O. Haller Jr., Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Social Science from Ohio State last spring. Haller was a visiting professor at Ohio State in 1982-83, when he contributed to the department’s excellence in quantitative methods and social stratification. Haller is internationally known for his research in comparative stratification and the

“Wisconsin model” of educational and status attainment. These core specialties remain prominent today with the department ranking 7th nationally among all sociology programs in the field of social stratification.

New! Interdisciplinary Specialization in Sexuality Studies Sociology is playing a major role in establishing an interdisciplinary specialization in sexuality studies at Ohio State, offering a minor for undergraduates and a certificate for graduate students. In addition to the course Sociology of Sexuality, which is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, the department now offers an intermediate course on Sex and Love in Modern Society.

New Courses! Our new Technology and Global Society course is becoming one of most popular courses on campus along with Sociology of Gangs, Sociology of Terrorism, and Death and Dying.

Alumni NewsNicole Raeburn (Ohio State, PhD 1999) won the 2007 Max Weber Award for Distinguished Scholarship for her book Changing the Corporation from the Inside Out: Lesbian and Gay Workplace Rights (University of Minnesota Press).

Kurt Schock (Ohio State, PhD 1995) received the best book award from the Comparative Democratization Section of the American Political Science Association for Unarmed Insurrections: People Power Movements in Nondemocracies (University of Minnesota Press).
