The students at Bronx Community College have been very busy duringthe month of June and the summer session has proven very exciting forthe students. Below you will find two articles about things that havebeen happening for the students in the SPE Student Chapter.

Dr. Petra Pötschke and her two fellow researchers, Mr. Tobias Villmowand Mr. Andreas Göldel visited the BCC student chapter in the Chem-istry Department on Tuesday June 30th and gave a presentation ontheir research on nanocomposites. They also visited with PresidentWilliams and spoke about international collaborative work on polymersand possible 3 month internships for our BCC students in Germany.

Dr. Petra Pötschke is a world renowned scientist in the field and hasbeen invited to many conferences. She studied mechanical processengineering Dresden University of Technology in Germany andcompleted her PhD in 1988. Her research was focused on the rheologicalbehavior of solid materials under different strain deformations. Since1988, she has worked as a scientist in the Department of PolymerReactions and Blends at Leibniz Institute of Polymer ResearchDresden, Germany. Her main research interest is in the field of multi-component polymer based materials, which covers a wide range ofmaterials such as immiscible polymer blends, blends withhyper-branched polymers, thermoplastic polyurethanes and carbonnanotube-polymer composites. In 2000/2001 she worked with Prof.Donald R. Paul at the University of Texas at Austin (Texas, USA) at theChemical Engineering Department on multiphase blend systems, whichwas supported by the grant scheme of the Max-Kade Foundation, NewYork. Since then she has focused on carbon nanotube filled compos-ites. She is currently the head of the research group "Composites andblends containing carbon nanofillers" at Leibniz Institute of PolymerResearch Dresden.

For more information please see:http://www.ipfdd.de/Dr-Petra-Poetschke.130.0.html?&L=0

Some of the student comments below:

Student Stacy-Ann NeilSome outstanding mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes

are, high strength steel wires with a Kevlar of about 49 fibers

including E-glass fibers.Carbon nanotubes are tiny particles which is about 1-10 nanometer

in diameter and 10 micrometers in length. These nanotubes can only be seen through a transmission electron

microscope. It is so small that the earth is compared to the size of afootball.

One yarn of carbon nanotubes with 1mm thickness could hold theweight of about 20 cars.

Some expected advantages include electrical conductivity andimprovement in wear and friction properties.

Student Kashori McneillDr. Petra Potschke gave the class a brief insight on a material called

Carbon Nanotubes (CNT). What I found most interesting about this material is its

strength and versatility. These CNTs are 1-10nm in diameter. They are so small they can

only be seen by using an Electron Transmisson Microscope, yet theyare 100x stronger than high strength steel. At 1mm in thickness theycan hold 20 cars.

The versatility in CNTs include being incorporated in sporting goods, car parts such as fuel lines and body panels of cars.

Its amazing how something so small and very light in weight can beso durable, stable, strong and versatile. I really appreciate Dr. PetraPotschke and her team's research. It will only help to better our future.

My adventures at ANTEC and NPEBy Ada Diallo-BBolly

BBRROONNXX CCOOMMMMUUNNIITTYY CCOOLLLLEEGGEESSTTUUDDEENNTT CCHHAAPPTTEERR NNEEWWSS

((ccoonnttiinnuueedd ffrroomm ppaaggee 55))

The trip to ANTEC and NPE event in Chicago was one ofthe nice college experiences I have had at Bronx CommunityCollege. The adventure started when I took a chemistry class. It was an unexpected benefit of being a member of SPE. I getto attend Society of Plastic Engineers conferences.

This time I went to Chicago to attend the planned StudentActivities this year at ANTEC, the word's largest plasticsevent. I left New York very early in the morning and arrived inChicago around 8 am local time. I was the only participantfrom BCC, so I traveled by myself from New York. When Igot to the hotel, there were different presentations, but I wasnot signed in for any presentation that morning so I took abus tour of downtownChicago.

On Monday, I went toseveral presentationsand to the NPE exposi-tion with my professor,Dr. Vicki Flaris.

One of the presenta-tions I attended waschemistry based on cornsugar (Iowa corn). Theresearch was done by aprofessor and PHD stu-

dents at New Jersey Institute of Technology and it focused on corn-derivedchemistries. Corn based chemicals are attractive because they are generallyregarded as safe; are renewable resource and can be made readily availableat competitive pricing. Interest is focused on isosorbide which offers molecu-lar geometry and chemical functionality compatible with many existing com-mercial chemistries.

But, as a non-expert, I foundthe expositionto be more excit-ing and colorfulthan the pre-sentations. It was the biggest ex-position I had everseen. Our first stop was Battenfeld booth.

After this we visited many other booths and inter-esting sights at NPE. I had an amazing time and lookforward to other conferences with SPE.

This trip was possible thanks to the generous sup-port of the SPE New York Section and the StudentActivities Committee at SPE International.

In front of the TrumpTower on Sunday June 21, 2009.

GOLF OUTINGGOLF OUTINGOur Members Came through Again

in spite of the difficult economic times we are struggling with.
