Social Studies TAKS Day
Test-taking Strategies
Critical to Remember
• You cannot instruct a student on how to take the test on TAKS test day. TAKS test day is the one day that students may take the test as they choose.
• TAKS testing strategies must be taught before test day.
After receiving the test
• Students put answer document under the desk
• Students open test booklet and write any acronyms, draw any visuals to help with key eras, concepts or principles in the inside cover
• Answer all questions in booklet first
Students…. Read through each question
• Write appropriate era• Circle people’s name• Highlight words like “not, except, least
likely…”• Put a question mark beside any words that
you are not sure of and see if you can pick up clues for those words
Read through each question again….
• When checking, brainstorm what you know about the era, vocabulary, key people, the time
• Remember-Most questions will have an answer choice that is true, but that is NOT the answer to the question
• Consider each of the four answer choices asking “Why not this one?”
• Try not to guess without eliminating two choices
