Opening Third graders here is what I need you to do.

Social Studies materials because we are

beginning a new unit. Desks should becleared.

Lesson: 1

hour

Okay so in Social studies last week we were

learning about the Native Americans who

lived in Michigan a long time ago and who

still live here today. Today we are beginninga new unit and we are going to learn about

the new people that came to Michigan and

North America after the Native Americans

were living there.

Okay who can tell me what this is up on

the board?

We dont need to talk or have a

refreshing course because this is a new

unit.

This is just to let students know that we

are picking up where we left off and its

okay if we dont discuss native

Americans anymore at this point.

Map of the World before North and S.

America

Yes its a map and what kind of source is a

map? (Primary)

Right, so lets take a look at this primarysource. What historian can show me where

Europe is on this map?

Okay so this is Europe and over here is

China and India are we missing anything

on this map? (U.S. and South America)

Yea, both North and South America are

missing. Why do you think its missing?

Well this map was created a very, very long

time ago and when this map was created

people didnt even know that North andSouth American existed!

We learned a while ago that some factories

in Michigan send their good to other states

and countries like cars and apples and

cherries. And just like Michigan does that

today countries in Europe did the same

thing with other countries all over the world

and still does today! Europeans had to travel

over land to get to places like China and

India..

If it took too long to travel over land toChina and India, how else could you get

there? (listen to students answers)

Reflecting on vocabulary from previous

lesson.

By asking students I can see who knowswhere Europe is and to see those who

have no idea.

Checking to see if anyone notices there

are two very large areas missing

By asking this question Im giving

students higher level thinking

questions to see if they understand the

map was created a long time ago and

not that I just forgot to put it up there.

I decided to add this because it would

bring up a lesson from a previous unit

and students could connect more to this

concept.

Beginning of the powerpoint presentation.

If it took too long to travel around Africa,

how else do you think you could get there?

So it would take travelers a REALLY long

time to get to the countries that they sold

their items too, so the French decided to

come up with a plan. What do you think that

plan could have been?

The French thought that there was a river in

North American that went through the

entire country and they could just said right

through the middle of the country and end

up in China. The French called this river the

Northwest passage. Why do you think they

called it that?

Here is the river they called the Northwest

Passage (point to the St. Lawrence River)

The French would travel as far as it could

go where does this river end up? (Great

lakes area)

Thats right the Great Lakes. And do you

historians think that this river goes through

the whole country?

Make a prediction about what you think the

French people found when they ended up at the Great Lakes. Share your ideas with a

partner

In asking this question I can check to

see if students are understanding that

Europeans thought they could travel

across N. America because they didnt

know it was there yet.

By explaining this to students they may

be able to see what the French were

thinking in order to get to china and

India faster.

Checking to see if students know it ends

at the great lakes.

Making a prediction gives students the

chance to talk to each other on what they think happened.

Whats something that you heard or shared

about the French finding in Michigan?

We are going to watch a movie to learn a

little more about some of the French

explorers who came to Michigan. Think

about all the explorers you hear and what

they did.

After Video----------------

So what did these explorers hope to

accomplish?

What did they accomplish instead?

How did the explorers interact with the

Native Americans that lived in Canada and

Michigan?

What was life like for the explorers in the

New World?

We historians are going to learn all about

the French explorers that came to Michigan

and all the new parts of North America they

discovered.

Reminding students that there are

important people we are going to meet

in this video and to see what all these

accomplishments were.

Here its important to listen to what the

students heard from the DVD and what

they took away from the video.

Having the opportunity to talk to theclass about the way Explorers treated

the Native Americans is important

because it will become an issue later on

in Michigan history.

Hand out the packets for the new Unit

and have the students put it away in

their Social Studies folder.

Closing Alright third graders here is what I need youto do. Please put your social studies

materials away and when I see a row thats

ready I will call on you to get ready to go

home.

Its MUCH easier to call on the studentsper row rather than having ALL the

students get up at once and run to their

jackets.
