President’s Report…

Hi everyone what a great night’s entertainment we had at our August dance, thanks to the fabulous Fender Benders. It wasn’t a big crowd - 120 rockers came to dance the night away and they didn’t stop. There were two dance floors going which gave everyone room to strut their moves. Thank you to all our members, friends and visitors for your continuing support. We have had some issues with the dance floor being very slippery for some time now, so we have had to put some bollards and chains up to prevent anyone slipping over. I have been assured that our Dinner Dance will see a newly stripped and polished surface for us to dance on, so fingers crossed. GJRs Members only Dinner Dance will be a blast with The Vincents to entertain you. It’s a 6pm arrival for a sit down 3 course dinner served from 6.30 onwards. John and Marty’s Bistro will be catering for this event. I hope you have booked your seats on the club phone with Glenda. Please make sure you advise her of any special dietary needs. Payment must be received in the clubs Bendigo Bank account by Friday the 25th of August. This event must be paid for in advance so we can establish catering numbers. Thank you all. It’s also a formal night so dress your best and see you there. The Festival committee is working very hard getting things ready for our Summer Rock n Roll Festival. There are lots of new and exciting changes for your enjoyment. Larry will be in touch with all our volunteers soon to arrange the roster for helping on that weekend. If anyone wants to help you can let Larry or any of our committee know and we’ll put you on the roster. Keep the 5th, 6th and 7th of January free for a great weekend of dancing. This event will also be pre booked and paid into a Ticketing Agent, more about that later. Demo bookings are starting to roll in again. I hope to see a few old faces again now most of our members are back from their winter escape. Please let me know if you want to be a part of our Demo team. GJR’s 2017 AGM is on Monday the 11th of September at 7pm at White Eagle House. If you think you can help be a part of this great Rock n Roll club PLEASE come forward as we will be needing some good kind hearted people with great skills and forward thinking to keep this great club running. " I can’t do it on my own”! It is with great sadness that we are losing some amazing people off our committee. Their workload has been enormous, and they have contributed with some very innovative changes that have made this very small committee run a lot smoother. I thank you Janet and Warren and Paul and Glenda as well as Lea Gilliland for the pleasure of working with you all, from the bottom of my heart. Keep on Rockin and spread the Love Cass

During the winter months Geelong Animal Welfare Society runs short of

blankets and towels. If you can help Lyn Johnson will be collecting old blankets

and towels on Monday and Thursday nights.

Previously we advised that there would be no Monday night social on the 3rd of September due

to a booking by the Polish Club. Please note that they have cancelled their arrangements and the

Monday night social WILL GO AHEAD as usual.

Curly and Rhonda catching up with Kevin, Barry, Carol and Nicki from Four Most Dance Company in

Coolangatta. They were one of Geelong’s first dance teachers and Curly and Rhonda remember having great

times with them at the dances. Awesome dancers, awesome people!

We can do it!

Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of World War II, representing the women who worked in factories and

shipyards during World War II, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women

sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who were in the military. Rosie the Riveter is

used as a symbol of feminism and women's economic power. Similar images of women war workers

appeared in other countries such as Britain and Australia. Images of women workers were widespread in the

media as government posters, and commercial advertising was heavily used by the government to

encourage women to volunteer for wartime service in factories. Rosie the Riveter became the subject and

title of a song and a Hollywood movie during WWII. Wikipedia

I think the Rosie the Riveter bandana look is absolutely one of my favorites and it can be super cute! It does

take a bit of practice though to get the bandana sitting just right. Here are a few tips I picked up along the

way.

Open Rosie: This is where the bandana is wrapped around the head but is open on top. This can be worn

with a Cinderella bun, pony tail, bee hive or a pile of curls – whatever takes your fancy. Fold your bandana

corner to corner and then fold the centre corner in towards the first fold. You can turn the corner under again

to reduce the size if it seems too wide but try it first – you don’t want it too narrow as this spoils the look. Keep

the straight edge (the first fold) to the bottom and tie the corners on top of your head. I like to tie the knot

slightly to one side but in the middle is fine too. Don’t tie it so tight that it wants to squirt off the back of your

head and also it should just cover the top of your ears. You may need to pin it in place with bobby pins and if

you keep them near the knot it will help to hide them. Neaten the top edge, add a flower if you like and voila!

Ready to rivet! And this works just as well with a square chiffon scarf.

Closed Rosie: This one’s a bit trickier but worth the effort. As the name suggests this style has a closed top

and is great for windy days or when your hair just isn’t behaving. Style your fringe or bangs, as you will be

able to see it. A front/side roll looks nice or just tease it and brush it back into a pomp and pin the ends. Take

your bandana and fold it like before only don’t take the corner right to the opposite side – leave about 2

inches. Place the fold at the nape of your neck and bring the middle corner up over your head to where your

fringe/bangs start. Tie the two outer corners over the top just once. Turn the middle corner backwards over

the tie and tuck the end under (don’t pull this section over the top of your head too tight), then finish tying the

knot. At this point it probably looks more like…remember when the old guys used to tie knots in the corner of

their hankies and stick it on their head!? Yeah, a bit like that. Don’t despair – we’re not quite finished. Now

you need to shape the bandana. Flatten the top with your hand and pull/fold the top to form a “rim” around the

crown. This is where you’ll need a little bit of play in the fabric, if you pulled it too tight over the top of your

head before you tied the knot this bit will not sit right. It’s hard to describe but you want your bandana to have

a triangular shape when viewed from the side rather than a semi-circular shape. This style is only suitable for

cotton bandanas – chiffon scarves won’t work.

For both styles make sure you open out the “rabbit ears” of the knot to make them look cuter. If you are using

a chiffon scarf you can tie a bow and either leave it like it is or I like to unravel the scarf from inside the loops

of the bow and then tuck the ends of the scarf underneath the knot, securing with bobby pins. This makes a

kind of flower which I think is really pretty. If you find that the scarf wants to creep up the back of your head

you can secure it down with two bobby pins crossed over at the nape of your neck but try to keep pins to a

minimum.

As many of you would know I have been growing my hair for the last little while from a pixie cut

and I am now having to learn how to manage my shoulder length, fine-but-thick, slightly curly hair and I

have made a few discoveries along the way that some of you may find useful.

Happy birthday to all our members who are having a birthday September!

Thank you everyone who has been supporting the line dance lessons. Lea and I are both thrilled at the

numbers we have attending the Monday night classes.

This month I will be teaching the ever popular Midnight Waltz and Lea will be teaching a brand new

dance called The Walk which was choreographed by Tara Snelling who is a rock and roll dancer from

Alley Catz in Melbourne. It’s a great fun dance and the music is very catchy so I’m sure you will be

seeing it around the clubs very soon.

Line dance lessons are held between 7.00 – 7.30pm every Monday and are free to attend.
