Difference between Social Media and Social NetworkingØ Both the terms used interchangeably, but not same

Ø Social networking is a subcategory of social media.

Ø Media refers to the information being shared like a link to an article or a video or image etc.

Ø Networking refers as to who is the audience and the relationship with them. Network can include friends, family, customers or even strangers.

Ø Example: Sharing of photos on SNS to collect likes or comments is a social networking example.

Ø However uploading a link on Reddit (social media platform) to help community and voice your opinion on the matter with no intentions of building any relationships with others.

Information credibility on social media

Ø It becomes difficult for users to identify whether the information posted on social mediacomes from a credible source or not.

Ø The group of researchers conducted a research on “Information credibility on Twitter” toautomatically assess the level of credibility of content posted on Twitter.

Ø Their result shows that there are signals available in social media itself that enables users toassess information credibility like newsworthy topics tend to include official websites' URL.

Privacy threats on Social Networking websites

Ø Users’ personal and sensitive information may get revealed or stolen due to not havingproper privacy settings.

Ø There are many reasons behind the users’ reluctance of adjusting the privacy settings.q Not having enough awareness about threats that may happen to user’s social mediaq Privacy policies are time consuming and not easy to understandq The diversity of the privacy settings makes them complicated for users

Ø Social media websites allow third party applications to be installed in user’s account

Ø The third party applications might share users’ personal information with other applications,advertising agencies and internet tracking companies, etc.

Ø The Facebook alone receives 250 millions photo uploads per dayØ People face many privacy threats both from these social networking websites and external

networking websites fail to implement correct policies

Cryptagram

Ø The researchers Matt Tierney, Ian Spiro, Christoph Bregler, Lakshminarayanan Subramaniancame with a system called Cryptagram to improve the photo privacy on social media.

Ø The users can encrypt the uploaded images using this system and they can have accesscontrol to these images via shared secret keys which is completely independent of socialnetworking websites and third parties.

Ø The end user can only access the original image if he/she has correct credentials. The otherscannot infer original image.

Actions needed to enhance the Privacy settings

Ø Regular review of privacy settings should be done

Ø Make users aware of new/current privacy settings by posting video on their accounts

Ø There should be no privacy settings by default. Users themselves should update privacysettings according to their need.

Security issues on social mediaØ The social networking websites have users’ personal data and also many of these websites

have authorized location tracking data.

Ø These information can be used for grater harm against users. These kinds of vulnerabilitiescause a disruption in integrity, confidentiality and availability of services.

Ø There can be many motives behind such attacks on social media like financial gain, socialhacking, activism, or intentional harm against someone or a company that the attackers donot like.

Security Question(s)

Ø The commonly used security questions for any bank or financial company websites are aboutthe date of birth, city, the previous school,etc.

Ø The answers of these types of security questions are mostly available on the social networkingwebsites such as Facebook.

Ø Rabkin conducted a survey for 46 users and 16 banks in order to test the security questions.He found that 35 questions were directly available online in popular social networking websitessuch as Facebook.

Ø Security questions should be changed with some new design.

Fake Profiles & Identity theft

Ø Fake profiles used to defame or harm other users.

Ø Many risks associated with these types of attacks includes kidnappings, child molestation,sexual abuse, defamation and other forms of harassment and indecency.

Ø Internet thieves can use steal one’s identity and use it to attack or infect his/her friends in somekind of scams.

Ø The information Commissioner’s Office in UK states that 4.5 million of young people are underrisks of identity fraud because of posting private information in social networking sites.

Conclusion

Ø Now a days some people are trying to bridge the gap between social media and HCI byincorporating the principles of HCI to social media systems design and investigating the latterto uncover new HCI insights.

Ø Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg suggests that incorporating the parameter of HCI to thedesign of social media tools at a recent Web 2.0 Summit by saying that “if you’re building aproduct that people love, you can afford to make a lot of mistakes.”

Ø The research shows that the HCI researchers should also play role in attending motivationsfor not using particular technology and its social ramifications of non use.
