Background
• 1st Social Media Club (SMC) formed summer 2006 by Kristie Wells & Chris Heuer.
• Global network of clubs and membership has grown steadily
• Today SMC is a 503 C(6) Trade Association– 300 plus chapters worldwide– 6 of the 7 continents– 300,000 plus members
• SMC’s Primary Mission– “To expand digital media literacy, promote standard technologies,
encourage ethical behavior, and share best practices
Background
• Summer of 2009 – Social Media Education Connection Project #SMCEDU– “To unite educators, students professionals to further
the development of social media curriculum in our schools, enabling a wider network of learning and workforce preparedness” – U.S. focus
• November 2010 – Board of Advisors Created to chart course of the
project

• A new type of Social Media Club Chapter• Created in response to requests from several
universities• Staff, faculty and administrators are asking for
their own chapters as social media usage has spread throughout campuses.
• They are looking for intra and inter campus engagement, sharing, learning, etc as well as professional development.

– President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Community Manager
• Open to entire campus employee population– Can be open to Students when no Student Chapter on
Campus

• Often led by journalism, marketing, communications majors

Starting an Education Chapter
• A Social Media Club (SMC) Education Chapter may be established at any college or university that is accredited by a nationally or regionally recognized accrediting association or board.
• What do you need?– 10 or more university employees who will actively
support the club and its activities.
Student Media Clubs
• What is the process to start a club?
– Find 10 or more university employees to actively support the chapter and become SMC Education members.
– Create chapter charter (constitution) and by-laws on how the chapter will operate.
– Submit the completed SMC Education Chapter Application form, application fee and the chapter by-laws for review.
– Note: the application fee is being waved during the 2011-2012 academic year. Education memberships are $10.
