Important TermsWhat do I mean when I say…

Social Media: Web and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Creates a 2 way conversation between the business and consumer and allows consumers to create user generated content by contributing.

Brand: Name, term, design, symbol, or other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers..

Personal Brand: The process where people and their careers are marked as brands. The personal branding concept suggests that success comes from self promotion.

Top 10 Format

Branding began as a way to tell one person's cattle from another by a hot iron stamp

1. Manage Your Search Results

*ACTIVITY- Take a minute to Google yourself

• What are your top 3 results?

• What else did you find in the results?

• Make note of anything you do not want in the results.

• Optimize profiles that come up high in search engine results.

2. Google ProfileIf you have a Gmail account, you have a Google Profile

• Your Google profile shows up in searches.

• Your Google profile shows up in chats, on phones, etc.

• Editing your Google profile is simple. When logged in to Gmail, click on your avatar on the top right hand side.

• *ACTIVITY- Update your Google Profile or create one

3. Have a great avatar/ profile photo

• This should be your face for personal pages and a clear company logo/icon for business pages. This is not the place to put a photo of your pets, kids or other item.

• Your avatar should show that you are likeable, friendly, positive.

• Your avatar will appear each time you post/ comment so it’s an important branding tool.

4. The LinkedIn Test• Not just for job seekers. For any professional.

• Digital resume that comes up high in search engine rankings.

• Complete your full profile.

• Make sure you have a custom URL.

• SEO TRICK- Include your company’s website. Under website listings choose “other” and write in the specific name for your company rather than just listing “Company Website”.

• *ACTIVITY- Update your LinkedIn contact information

5. Update your Personal Facebook Profile

• Check your privacy settings to ensure you’re only providing public information you intend to. Facebook constantly changes their privacy features so make a habit of regularly checking your settings.

• Know that setting your Facebook to private, does not mean that it’s really private.

6. Set up your Facebook Business Page

• DO NOT use a personal profile as a business page. People need to LIKE your business page, not add as a friend. – Using a personal profile as a business page is against Facebook policy.

• To create a business page, click on any existing business page and click on the “Create Page” button on the top right.

• Company information- Include your website and links to other social networks.

• Create a cover photo that represents your business.

7. Write Effective Tweets

• Brand your background and bio.

• Post educational tips related to your industry.

• Retweet and reply to others so you’re actively engaging in conversation.

• Provide value to your followers by posting useful information related to the media your represent.

• Live Tweets: Post a tweets and photos during events.

• Job openings

• *ACTIVITY- Post a Tweet or set up an account.

“Tweets are my own” is not true!

8. Instagram• Images trump text.

• Best to use the same username for Instagram that you have on Twitter. Easier for people to tag you.

• Utilize a few hashtags for each image to optimize exposure. You can comment with hashtags.

• Take photos related to your brand that give people a glimpse of what you’re doing real time.

• Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

• Fresh new content.

• Humanizes and personalizes your brand.

• Most flexible form of Social Media because you can incorporate your own posts, social media insights, personal information in addition to information about your company.

• Opportunity to post insightful resources that may be useful to future clients and community partners.

• ACTIVITY- Write 3 blog topics you can post about
