AN INVITATION
“It is important to know how to dialogue,
and how to enter, with discernment, into
the environments created by new
technologies, into social networks, in
such a way as to reveal a presence that
listens, converses and encourages.
Do not be afraid to be this presence,
expressing your Christian identity as you
become citizens of this environment. A
Church that follows this path learns how
to walk with everybody!” Pope Francis
WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?
- What - Who - Why - Strengths - Limitations
Founded in 2004, Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.
Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them.
Instagram is a free and simple way to share your life and keep up with other people.
Take a picture or video, then customize it with filters and creative tools. Post it on Instagram and share instantly on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more—or send it directly as a private message. Find people to follow based on things you’re into, and be part of an inspirational community.
3 REASONS TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA
1. Community / relationship focused
- Build connection
2. Share information and resources
3. Communication tool
- Answer questions
- Reach people where they are
- Share the message both internally and externally
HOW TO USE IT
1. What is the message is and who it is for
2. Who are we speaking to (Audience)
3. How do we say it (Content Channels)
4. Create content!
4. What is the best way to share it with our audience
5. Spread the word!
SOME TIPS / WHAT NOT TO DO
- Quality over quantity (just like in real life)- It’s not all about the ‘likes’ - Try not to think it isn’t ‘social’ or ‘real’ - Be careful of over-sharing - And about who your focus is on- Speak negatively / offensively or share a
personal opinion on a public platform
HOW TO GET STARTED
1. Gather your team
- PP
- Parishioners
- Sponsors
- Past RCIA Participants
2. Define your goals (short term and long term)
3. Set out your guidelines and confirm with your Diocesan
Communication’s Office
4. Prepare a schedule
5. Connect / Listen/ Share
TASK: CREATE AN SOCIAL MEDIA POST
Goal

We need to hear what you have to say. You have
all the resources needed to put the word out
into the world about our Faith. Work with your
Parish Priest to verify what you’re putting out
and start sharing! A good start is the news page
on your Parish website / Facebook page
