♦ 1920s came to be known as a socially and politically conservative time. (Even though suffrage and prohibition were passed during this decade)

♦ Racial tensions intensified- due to the popularity of organizations like the Klu Klux Klan. (membership rose to approx. 3 million members)

♦Increase in car ownership. Petroleum industry had a 500% increase of gasoline consumption.

♦Motion Pictures

♦Ticket sales increased from $301 million in 1921 to $720 million in 1929.

♦ Radio

♦ Spectator sports

♦Women won right to vote- August of 1920 (this affected the roles of women in society)

♦Wages for both genders increased, this allowed families to buy consumer goods in time payments.

♦ Everyone wanted The American Dream it is why people worked for nicer things and made people feel equal, like everyone could have the dream.

♦ Before the 1920s, expensive items (cars, vacuum cleaners, washing machines) were thing only the wealthy could afford to buy.

FASHION♦ Flapper Fashion. (short sleek hair, short shapeless dress, flat chest, wore make up and applied it in public, smoked using a long cigarette holder, exposed her limbs, and had the attitude of a reckless rebel)

♦Skirts only revealed the knees between 1926 and 1928.

♦Feminine clothing became looser and more shapeless.

♦Narrow boyish hips were preferred.

♦Increased use of make up and increasing popularity of applying it in public.

EFFECTS OF WAR

♦ Young adults were made old.

♦ Men had seen the realities of trench warfare.

♦ Women had seen horrific injuries and mental suffering.

♦Out of war came medical progress (cosmetic and plastic surgery).

♦Feeling that life is short and should be enjoyed.

♦Broke down longstanding class barriers.

♦Mass production and mass advertising.

♦People were encouraged to read and self improve.

♦Wireless and gramophone soon reached ordinary households.

♦Own judgments were made. Listened to music, entertainment, news, and current affairs.

PARTYING DECADE♦ 18th amendment- alcohol illegal.

♦Bootleggers- sold illegal alcohol.

♦Speakeasies- places where people could go to drink and have a good time.

♦More people were drinking because of the amendment.

♦More people were getting arrested or killed because they had hid their liquor.

FEMISNISM

Feminism—the belief in the full economic, political, and social equality of males and females—is usually seen as a modern movement to transform the male-dominant past and create an egalitarian future.

Feminism is history and a memory.
