Session Overview

Slide 2Social Psychology

We established in Session one that Social Psychology is scientificin nature because it employs scientific principles and methodsof research in the study of human behavior.•In this session we shall look at some of the methods ofresearch used in Social Psychology namely; the observationmethod, the ethnographic method, archival method, and thesurvey method

At the end of the session, you should be able to:•Explain what each of these methods are and how theyare used to conduct research in Social Psychology•Identify the strengths and shortcomings of each ofthemethods

Topic One

WHY STUDY RESEARCH METHODS?

Slide 5Social Psychology

Page 6: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Why Study Research Methods?

• Social Psychology research illuminates causes of humanbehavior. Social Psychology shows us that some of thebeliefs about ourselves and others are mistaken.

• Knowledge of research methods helps you to conductthought experiments: critical thinking ideas you arenot able to test because of insufficient resourcesand/or because they are unethical.

• Knowledge of research methods helps you tounderstand the discussions in any Social Psychologytextbook or literature you read.

Why Study Research Methods?

Slide 7Social Psychology

• Knowing and understanding research methods makes you a betterconsumer of knowledge. For instance, if you should read an article, newspaper or any data concerning any social behaviour orissue, you can assess the appropriateness of the methods used andthus the reliability of the information obtained.

• Additionally, knowledge of research methods will help you to avoidsome common mistakes that others make. For instance, manypeople cannot differentiate between correlation and causation. They often assume that once two variables are related, one musthave caused the other. But, you will know the difference at the endof this current session and the next.

• Finally, Knowledge of research methods can help you choose yourown subject of human behaviour and investigate it scientifically.

Topic Two

THE SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATION

Slide 8Social Psychology

METHOD

Page 9: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Defining Systematic Observation

• It is not a mere informational kind of observation but a careful, accurate and measured observation of human and social behaviour.

• One of such is by Baron et al (2006) which say observation ͞is a methodof research in which behaviour is systematically observed andrecorded ͟.

• Aronson et al (2007) define it as ͞a technique whereby aresearcher observes people and systematically recordsmeasurements of impressions of their behaviour.

• An approach that merely looks at a phenomenon in some reasonablysystematic way, with a view to understanding ǁhat’s going on andcoming up with hypothesis about how things are happening the waythey are.(Gilovich et al, 2016).

Slide 9Social Psychology

Page 10: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

The Process of Systematic Observation

Slide 10Social Psychology

• Participant Observation: observing somephenomenon at a close range

• Observations may be done in a semi-formal way-taking notes and interviewing participants

• Noting down impressions obtained from participantobservation

Page 11: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Limitations of the Observation Method

Slide 11Social Psychology

• The observation method though very useful in describing social behaviouris limited in the sense that not all behaviour can be observed as theyoccur or if they do, they happen in private.

• For instance if a researcher wants to observe people reactionsto earthquakes in Ghana, that researcher may have no wait foreverbecause earthquakes are a rare occurrence in Ghana.

• Or let’s say a researcher wants to know if Ghanaian men enjoy violentsex- it will be difficult to know since sex is a rather very private matter.Wanting to definitely investigate it may raise ethical issues (theresearcher as a voyeaur).

• Observations are thus, often misleading requiring other methods to verifysocial phenomenon.

Topic Three

ETHNOGRAPHY

Slide 12Social Psychology

Page 13: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

DEFINING ETHNOGRAPHY

• Ethnography is ͞the method by which researchers attemptto understand a group or a culture by observing it from theinside without imposing any preconceived notions thatthey might haǀe’ Aronson et al (2007)

• Simply, what ethnography seeks to do isto understand

people from the people’s own point of view.

Slide 13Social Psychology

Page 14: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Limitations of Ethnographic Studies

Slide 14Social Psychology

• The challenge is how to ensure that an observer is accurate in hisobservations and recordings of what he observed. This is becausesometimes an observer may overlook a detail or record it wrongly.Even though objectivity is required, sometimes oďserǀer’s personaland subjective opinion may intrude in their observations.

• You can counter this challenge with what is known as inter-judgereliability. This refers to the level of agreement between twoor more people who independently observe and code a set of data.

• By showing that two or more people or judges independently comeup with the same observations, researchers ensure thatthe observations are not the subjective, distorted impressionsof one individual.

Topic Four

ARCHIVAL RESEARCH

Slide 15Social Psychology

Page 16: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

What is Archival Research?

• Archival analysismethod.

is another form of the observational

• Here, the researcher examines the accumulateddocuments and archives of a culture.

• These documents depict and tell agreat deal about a

people and their soĐiety’s values and culture.

Slide 16Social Psychology

Page 17: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Sources of Archival Research

Slide 17Social Psychology

• There exist several sources of archivaldocuments. These include diaries, novels, music, movies, television shows, newspaperarticles, advertising, census reports, policerecords, sports statistics, databases historic andethnographic (anthropological descriptions of peoplein different cultures)

• These sources provide immense information about apeople’s beliefs and life to a large extent.

Page 18: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Archival Research-Limitations andSolutions

Slide 18Social Psychology

• The researcher is at the mercy of the original compiler(s) of thesedocuments. Exactly how accurate these documents are may not beeasy to ascertain. Thus if a compiler provides inaccurateor subjective information, they could be mistaken to be a reflectionof way of life of a people which may not be exact.

• This perhaps is the case with how Africa is depicted to the world(often negatively) even though a myriad of inspiring positive storiescould also be told about Africa.

• The solution however is to consult several sources and documentsbefore one draws any conclusions. Certainly, all compilers of thesedocuments would not be biased. Thus, a more detailedcomparative analysis of various types of documents will leadyou to more accurate conclusions.

Topic Four

SURVEYS

Slide 19Social Psychology

Page 20: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Surveys

Slide 20Social Psychology

• Involves simply askingquestionnaires orinterviews.

people questions using written

• Often used when researchers want to investigate beliefs andattitudes of people towards a phenomenon. Samples may be largeor small.

• The people in a survey are often a random sample of thepopulation as a whole giving everybody an equal chance of beingselected

•The sample for a survey may also be purposively selected ifthe research objectives are targeted at a specific group of people-say gays.

Page 21: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Sample Question

Slide 21Social Psychology

• Imagine you are a researcher interested in studyingpeoples perceptions of corruption in Ghana. Whichof the methods discussed here would beappropriate for this study and why?

Page 22: SOCI 323 Social Psychology - WordPress.com · SOCI 323 Social Psychology ... of research in the study of human behavior. ... accurate and measured observation of human and social

Summary of Session

Slide 22Social Psychology

• This session introduced you to four methods used inSocial Psychological research.

• Each of these methods involves a careful observation ofphenomena by the researcher.

method uses secondary data

• Thus depending on the nature of the research on isengaged in, one method may be more suitable touse than another. No one method is thus superior toanother.

• Whilst the observation, ethnographic and survey

methods

seek to obtain primary data, the archival
