Have you made the jump from static stretching

to dynamic stretching?I remember distinctly the warm-up routines I went through as a young high school athlete. Nothing but lots of ballistic exercises from jumping jacks to mountain climbs to squat thrusts. All, I might add, to the four-count military cadence. When I hit college, in came the static stretching standard that has been the basis for all warm-up routines for many years now. Now, we have a new, scientifically researched standard that is being promoted as the more effective way to really warm-up and, at the same time, improve power, balance, and flexibility. Welcome to “Dynamic Stretching!”In fact, I just left one of our high school’s summer conditioning sessions where the first activity written on the schedule was “Dynamics.” We are most fortunate in Greenville, South Carolina, to have as a partner to our sports programs the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Their team includes the Acceleration Sports Institute (ASI) and Proaxis Therapy. These two companies, like Steadman Hawkins, are national leaders in their respective fields. The last two workshops we had for our coaches included sessions on dynamic stretching presented by the ASI and Proaxis staffs. These were powerful by the ASI and Proaxis staffs. These were powerful presentations, with actual demonstrations and video clips of dynamic stretching routines. Suffice it to say that all of our teams have embraced these as the basis for their warm-up routines. To watch our teams come out before a game, and start to do exercises that more closely resemble ballet dancers warming up than athletes getting ready for competition, is quite a site. Dynamic stretching replaces the old static stretching routine of holding each position for ten to thirty seconds for warming up before practices and competitions. Its name, “dynamic,” defines each exercise as requiring some kind of movement. These exercises come with names like “straight-leg march,” “scorpion,” “spider-man walks,” “hand-walks,” “Grouchos” and “butt kicks.” The research on dynamic stretching counters the static method with results showing an increase in overall athletic performance. Many findings indicate that static stretching actually decreases muscle strength (at least temporarily) whereas dynamic stretching increases strength, power, balance and range of motion. Since dynamic exercises require movement, they literally warm the muscles by increasing blood flow significantly.

Plantation FC maintained their five game win streak lead at

the top of the Gold Coast SDL Pre-season games, after

cruise by PARKLAND FC with a 5-0 victory .

Somewhere down in Florida a group of Canada's most promising young soccer players are gathering for an fourteen days training camp. Nick Dasovic called a group of 20 young men for the camp that will run for a couple more weeks and will include a pair of matches .This camp is important for Canada as it gives Dasovic another chance to work with the players who will play a key role in trying to earn a berth in the 2013 Under-20 World Cup in Turkey. To get there though Canada will have to manage a top four finish in the CONCACAF U-20 Championships which will take place in Mexico from February 18 until March 3. It will certainly be a tough task for Canada to advance but there is no reason to think that a group of this quality can not hold their own with anyone in CONCACAF including the US, Mexico, and Honduras

US Youth Soccer is proud to announce that Edmond, Okla.,

and Oklahoma Soccer Association will host the 2013 US

Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships as part of

the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, the

country's most prestigious national youth soccer

tournament. The games will take place at the ESC Complex

in Edmond, Okla.

The championships are expected to draw more than 3,600

players and an estimated 12,000 spectators and

Florida’s premier Presidents’ Day Weekend tournament for boys and

girls teams. In 2012, the Weston Cup had 485 teams from

throughout Florida, multiple states, and international teams from

Canada, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Venezuela, and Mexico that competed at

four facilities which included over 30 playing fields. Teams from

outside Florida, including international teams participate each year.

The tournament will offer four levels of competition: Showcase,

Gold, Silver, and Bronze for U8 through U19 boys and girls teams. For

2013 we are expecting over 475 teams from out-of-state, across

Florida, and internationally.

How much of what we see of LIONEL MESSI on the

football ground can be associated with coaching? Is ‘star’ quality something that is teachable? I don’t believe that production-line coaching methods can produce ‘Ferrari-type footballers’. Coaching, especially in the UK, has a history of providing ‘commercial vehicles’ for ‘Grand-Prix’ events. I fervently believe, however, that playing standards can be dramatically improved and ‘stardom’ can be produced far more for the game than in the past as long as the work that is applied from ‘cradle to professional, public exposure’ is correctly designed for purpose – to produce ‘great footballers’.

Can Stardom Be Taught?

all of these players first acquired a natural playing style that was either allowed to develop without being hindered by ‘ academic intrusion’ or they were accepted into teaching and playing regimes that were designed to expand their individual playing qualities and not suppress them. Lionel Messi, is a modern example of ‘poverty produces player(s)’. His upbringing was simplistic in terms of playing education. He played in street games with friends and during these regular ‘competitive’ matches, he learned essential aspects of the game and applied them without outside interference.

On his introduction into Barcelona’s Academy, he was nurtured towards his present greatness and allowed to improve his natural playing qualities; he was never guided towards mediocrity and robotic football responses. Today, in the largest stadiums in the world, he applies the same playing qualities he first gathered in the streets of

There is no doubt that great players of the past produced themselves on the streets and make-do playing areas in all parts of the world, and to some extent, this continues to this day in some of the poorer countries. Many of the playing qualities that were learned on these congested ‘pitches’ during the ‘practice whilst playing’ sessions, have never been replaced by ‘artificial’ teaching methods (coaching). Unlike present, ‘ Press-dressed’ players ‘hyped’ as great, the truly great players usually have a ‘poverty produces player’ label attached. From the distant past of; Puskas,

This is very noticeable here in the UK and USA; individually skilful players are limited in numbers and games at all levels are nothing more than copy-cats of each other – there are no English or American players in the top soccer leagues selected for the top UEFA teams or player of the year nominations!!

playing partners. These skills are allowed to ‘blossom’ and then spread to ‘cement’ and create an attractive and effective style of play. Football (soccer) is ‘the beautiful game’; carefully blended with the other important components, it is individual skills that adds the allure, color and excitement to it.

It should not be forgotten that defending is also a skill and has to be recognized as such. FC Barcelona, have highly talented, individualistic players in all positions and whether in possession of the ball or attempting to regain it, they employ high levels of individual skill and football intellect. But it is not just individual ball manipulation etc. that is conquering the football world, it is how individualism also allows players to interchange positions and to combine with fluidly and cleverness.

FC Barcelona, epitomize the development beliefs and much of the playing style envisaged in Premier Skills Coaching. We know that our youngsters in this country, developed properly, could be more than capable of taking on anything in world football — and win with style.And so to answer the question, can ‘stardom’ be taught’? my answer is a definite YES, but only if the correct vision is set and a suitable coaching method is used to achieve it!

formed in 1878, albeit under a different

name - Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire

and Yorkshire Railway).

Little suspecting the impact they were about

to have on the national, even global game,

the workers in the railway yard at Newton

Heath indulged their passion for association

football with games against other

departments of the LYR or other railway

companies.

Indeed, when the Football League was

formed in 1888, Newton Heath did not

consider themselves good enough to

become founder members alongside the

likes of Blackburn Rovers and Preston North

End. They waited instead until 1892 to make

their entrance. Financial problems plagued

Newton Heath, and by the start of the

twentieth century it seemed they were

destined for extinction. The club was

saved, however, by a local brewery owner,

John Henry Davies. Legend has it that he

learned of the club's plight when he found

a dog belonging to Newton Heath captain

Harry Stafford.

Davies decided to invest in Newton Heath, in return

for some interest in running it. This led to a change

of name and, after several alternatives including

Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were

rejected, Manchester United was born in April/May

1902.

The Manchester United team at the start of the 1905–

06 season, in which they were runners-up in the Second

Division.


1940-1949

The outbreak of the Second World War forced

football to the very back of people's minds between

1939 and 1946. But even in the absence of League

football, Old Trafford was still the focus of attention.

On 11 March 1941 the stadium was bombed during

a German air raid. The attack destroyed the main

stand, dressing rooms and offices. It was a

devastating blow, but within a few years, there would

be optimism again around the famous old ground.

It came with a man named Matt Busby, who would

prove to be the most important figure in the history of

Manchester United. A former Manchester City and

Liverpool player, Busby served in the Ninth Battalion

of the King's Liverpool Regiment where his

leadership qualities shone through. These qualities

did not go unnoticed by United.

Busby joined the Reds in 1945, initially on a five-

year contract. Little did he know he would still be

managing the club 25 years later!

Busby's mix of young local lads and established

players won their first trophy the following year,

when they beat the Blackpool side of Stanley

Matthews, Stan Mortensen and Harry Johnston

in the 1948 FA Cup Final. It was 39 years to the

day that United had previously won the Cup, in

1909.

The FA Cup was also the club's first major

honor since winning the League Championship

in 1911, and recapturing the title would now

Busby didn't waste any time in making his mark,

altering the positions of several key players. He also

founded the "Famous Five" forwards when he

brought together Jimmy Delaney, Stan Pearson,

Jack Rowley, Charlie Mitten and Johnny Morris.

Perhaps the most important signing Busby made,

however, was on the coaching staff. Matt had met

Jimmy Murphy during the war, and identified him as

his perfect right-hand man. The pair formed a

partnership that would see United become a power in

world football.

Busby and Murphy's first step on the road to glory

was to build a team that was capable of challenging

for domestic honors. They succeeded almost at the

first attempt, as United finished second to Liverpool

in the first Football League campaign after the war,

1946/47. It was the club's highest placing for 36

years, and there was extra cause for optimism when

the Reserves won their (Central) League

Championship in the same season.

war reign, United finished second on four

occasions, and fourth on the other (1949/50).

The thrill of the chase for honors brought the

fans flooding back – more than one million of

1990 to Present

The dawn of the 1990's saw Alex Ferguson collecting his first silverware as Manchester United manager, and Liverpool winning their last League Championship with an ageing team. The tide was turning…Fergie's first FA Cup, achieved after a replay against Crystal Palace, seemed at the time to be a stand-alone success, one that possibly saved his job after another poor season in the League. But nine years later, it seemed that Lee Martin's winning goal against Palace lit the fuse for an explosion of unprecedented success.

The influence that “boyish” Giggs could have on results was never more apparent than in the 1998/99 FA Cup semi-final replay, when he scored perhaps the goal of the decade – a solo run and finish that left Arsenal's defenders grasping at thin air. It booked United's place in their fifth FA Cup final of the 1990's, and this time they won it, beating Newcastle United 2-0 with goals by Paul Scholes and substitute Teddy Sheringham.That result clinched United's third Double, six days after the Premiership title had been wrapped by Andy Cole's goal against Tottenham at Old Trafford. But still there was more to come from a remarkable campaign.After an epic Champions League semi-final against Juventus, when Keane inspired the team to fight back from 2-0 down in the second leg, United marched into an epic final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona.

the fuse for an explosion of unprecedented success.First and foremost, winning the FA Cup in 1990 allowed United to make their return to European competition after an absence of five years. Far from being rusty, they went all the way to the final of the European Cup Winners Cup in Rotterdam where their opponents were Barcelona, the former club of United striker Mark Hughes. Two goals by Hughes sealed the match 2-1 in Fergie's favor in May 1991, 23 years after the club's previous triumph in Europe.

United's attempts to win the European Cup for the first time since 1968 looked to be doomed when Bayern took an early lead through Mario Basler and defended it with typical German resilience. But then, in injury time, the Reds produced one of the most stunning revivals in sporting history – Sheringham equalised, and moments later his fellow substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fired in the winner to make the score 2-1. United had won the Treble; their manager Alex Ferguson was subsequently knighted as his fans around the globe basked in the glory.The Treble became a quadruple later in the year when Sir Alex Ferguson's men travelled to Tokyo to compete for the Inter-Continental Cup. Keane's goal against Palmeiras of Brazil bestowed upon United the title of World Club Champions. Officially, at the end of the millennium, the biggest football club in the world had also become the best in the world!

Third try at women's pro soccer

league to launch

Another pro women's soccer league will try to succeed where two previous

attempts have failed.

The currently unnamed eight-team league will launch in the spring, U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday. The clubs will be located in Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle, western New York and Washington.

The sport has repeatedly shown it can draw large numbers of fans in the stands and on TV for the World Cup and Olympics, but women's soccer has yet to find a foothold as a pro sport in the U.S.WUSA folded in 2003 after three seasons, failing to capitalize on the success of the 1999 World Cup. More recently, Women's Professional Soccer folded this year, also after three seasons.

With a vested interest in ensuring national team players have somewhere to play in the years leading up to the 2015 World Cup, U.S. Soccer is stepping in this time to seek to create a viable economic model. The teams will still be privately owned, but the federation will pay for the salaries of 24 national team players.

One of the age-old debates in soccer centers on

who is the best player of all time: Pele or Maradona? The argument is multifaceted, but if one of the deciding factors were controversy, Diego Armando Maradona would win hands down.

El Pibe de Oro (The Golden Boy) made his professional debut with Argentinos Juniors against Talleres de Córdoba on October 20, 1976, just 10 days short of his 16th birthday. He scored in excess of 100 goals for the club, but despite his mesmerizing form, a call-up from Cesar Luis Menotti for the 1978 World Cup was not forthcoming.

Maradona joined Boca Juniors in 1981, although it was only a fleeting stay. He helped them win the championship before moving to Barcelona. His transfer fee was a world record but Maradona found the temptations of the city too much to resist, and it was in 1983 that he allegedly started using cocaine.

From his infamous 'Hand of God' goal to the firing of a compressed air rifle at reporters outside his house, Maradona's past is checkered, but his genius never questioned. His technique was sublime and left-foot magical. His strength, dribbling skills and close control combined to take him past defenders, the end result often a goal or an assist for a teammate.In his autobiography, Maradona appears to harbor resentment against many in the game, those he believes have wronged him over the years. He is nothing if not honest about his feelings, and his outspoken views continue to cause a stir in in the game, long after retiring as a player in 1997.

Maradona was raised in Villa Fiorito, a shantytown on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires. One of six children in a poor family, he says in his autobiography that his father never allowed him to go without a meal, but that he had to work in a factory from 4 am each day to do so.

The history of football boots mirrors the

development and progression of the beautiful game of football in the late 19th century and into the 20th century. Football rules and laws were introduced to progress football into a more organized and formalized structure, which succeeded in moving a largely provincial game into the sport that is enjoyed around the world right into the 21st century. Football as a game was part of British life for several hundred years previously and one early protagonist included probably the most famous and notorious historical figures of British history, King Henry VIII (1509-1547).

Moving forward 300 years saw football developing and gaining popularity throughout Britain, but still remaining as an unstructured and informal pastime,


Earliest Recorded – King Henry VIII in 1526

King Henry VIII’s football boots were listed within the Great Wardrobe of 1526, a shopping list of the day. They were made by his personal shoemaker Cornelius Johnson in 1525, at a cost of 4 shillings, the equivalent of £100 in today’s money. Little is known about them, as there is no surviving example, but the royal football boots are known to have been made of strong leather, ankle high and heavier than the normal shoe of the day.

Over in Germany, Dassler brothers Adolf and Rudolf formed the GebrÃ¼der Dassler Schuhfabrik(Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) in Herzogenaurach in 1924 and began producing football boots in 1925 which had 6 or 7 replaceable, nailed studs, which could be changed according to the weather conditions of play.

This led to interchangeable screw in studs made of plastic or rubber for the first time, reputedly by Puma in the early 1950′s but the honor is also claimed by Adidas Football boots of the time were still over the ankle, but were now being made of a mixture of synthetic materials and leather, producing and even lighter shoe for the players of the day to display their skills with.

Exercises To Help Prevent ACL Injuries

A Physical Therapist’s Perspective:

Physical therapists recommend that athletes perform a series of exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and coordination,as well as to counteract incorrect existing patterns of movement that may be damaging to their joints. These movement patternsmay put them at greater risk for injuring their Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL).These exercises demonstrate a sample of an injury prevention program and are not intended as a substitute for

a treatment

program designed by a physical therapist or other health care professional

1. Single Leg Balance: Single Leg Balance: Stand on one leg with your knee

slightly bent and attempt to maintain your balance for 15

to 30 seconds. Keep your hip, knee, and foot aligned with

Do 1-3 sets of 8-12 repetitions on each foot. As this task
