DELFT HYDRAULICS SOFTWARE
State-of-the-art modelling framework for integrated simulation
SOBEK
SOBEK is a practical modelling framework, supporting the work of engineers inthe design or rehabilitation of water systems. SOBEK simulates the complex flowsand the water related processes in almost any system. SOBEK is the ideal tool forguiding the designer in making optimum use of his limited financial resources.
Integrated approachSOBEK offers one software environment forthe simulation of all management problems inthe areas of river and estuarine systems, drainage and irrigation systems andwastewater and storm water systems. Thisallows for combinations of flow in closedconduits, open channels, rivers overlandflows, as well as a variety of hydraulic, hydrological and environmental processes.Three product lines, SOBEK-River, SOBEK-Rural and SOBEK-Urban, have beendeveloped with specific user interfacesenabling our clients to competently andefficiently deal with all water relatedproblems.
A powerful hydrodynamic 1D/2D/3D simulation engineThe hydrodynamic 1D/2D/3D simulation engine is the computational core of the SOBEKproduct lines. This engine is used in all 1DFLOW modules and Overland Flow modules(2DFLOW) within the SOBEK framework. Thus allowing the combined simulation of pipe-channel- and overland flow through an implicit coupling of 1D and 2D flow equations. SOBEKis the ideal tool for studying the effects of dam breaks, river floods, dike breaches, urbanflooding etc.
Open systemThe wide range of additional modules within the SOBEK framework makes it possible tomodel almost any aspect of a water system. However, for those who prefer to add newprocesses to proven knowledge, SOBEK offers two easy open system approaches:
• Open Process Library approachAn Open Process Library for water related processes. Since people are not writing theirown word processor before writing a word document SOBEK offers now a kind of wordprocessor for water related processes, such as water quality processes. A powerful userinterface allows the possibility to describe new substances/organisms, processes andcoefficients and based on this description to generate a personalised water qualitycomputer code, which can be interlinked with the other SOBEK modules.
• OpenMI (www.openmi.org) approachMost of the modules of SOBEK are OpenMI compliant. Therefore, these modules are opento the connection of user-made modules through the widely accepted unified method tolink models.
GIS environmentAs our clients all have different requirements relating to GIS, SOBEK offers two GIS solutions:• The Delft-TOOLS OpenGIS environment NETTER. This environment is free of charge. It
allows for the import and export of a range of GIS formats. The NETTER layers provide anextremely fast data access while performing map based input data editing and postprocessing of results.
• A Map Front End approach to plug in SOBEK components into GIS environments such asArcGIS.
Robustness of numerical operationsThe hydrodynamic 1D/2D/3D simulationengine is equipped with a very robustscheme for numerical computation. It alsoguarantees mass conservation, even incase of transitions through suddenlyvarying cross section shapes. The enginecombines computations of sub critical andsupercritical flow, at scales selected by theuser. It handles flooding and drying ofchannels without the use of artificialmethods such as the Preissmann slot.
Numerical efficiencyThe hydrodynamic 1D/2D/3D simulationengine has a very efficient numericalsolution algorithm; this is based upon theoptimum combination of a minimumconnection search direct solver and theconjugate gradient method. It also applies avariable time step selector, whichsuppresses the waste of computationaltime wherever this is feasible.
Size of modelsThe size of the model is only limited bythe size of the internal memory of thecomputer used.
Powerful water quality facilitiesSOBEK is supplied with a water qualityprocesses editor, which contains in excess of600 processes. It allows the user to combinetheir own sets of processes or to select frompredefined sets. One of SOBEK’s powerfulwater quality functionalities is thedetermination of the source of water at anytime of the year and at any location of themodelled area.
Maintenance and supportA competent and efficient helpdesk isavailable to all our users. In order to continuea first class support service a support site forregistered users of SOBEK has beendeveloped. The first year helpdesk supportand improved releases are free of charge.
PartnershipsSOBEK is the product of the joint effort ofDelft Hydraulics, the Ministry of PublicWorks of the Netherlands and a number ofwidely respected consulting firms. As a resultSOBEK software combines state-of-the-artknowledge with a practical approach makingthis software invaluable for engineering andwater management studies.
ClientsThere are over 600 SOBEK licenses in useworld wide.

Modelling simple and complex river systems and estuaries
SOBEK-River is the powerful product line within the integrated 1D/2Dmodelling framework for water management, design, planning and policymaking, designed for simple and complex river systems and estuaries.
SOBEK-River ModulesThe hydrodynamic 1D/2D/3D simulation engine is the computational core ofSOBEK. The robustness, accuracy and performance are breathtaking. Only oneengine is used for the FLOW modules of all product lines.
The engine combines 1D and 2D simulation coupled implicitly interfaced in the horizontalplane. This approach has the advantage that 2D flow is free to take its direction across a 1Dchannel and/or pipe when there is substantial flooding of the flood plain. For insignificant flowon the flood plain the 1D flow takes its dominant course. The wide range of additionalmodules within the SOBEK framework makes it possible to model any aspect of a riversystem.
