Gaming activities — group and otherwise — continue to grow.

Americans, canadians and visi-tors to both nations are into gaming, and Group Tour magazine’s Gaming edition recognizes that.

In the United States, there are more than 850,000 slot machines — or twice as many as ATms. Annually, Americans spend more on gaming than movies, baseball and theme parks combined, cBS news reported.

As Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., Ameri-can Gaming Association president and cEO, points out: “To its credit, the gaming industry is constantly in-novating to provide a richer experi-ence for our customers.”

many support such experiences. For instance, 31 percent of

Americans visited casinos dur-ing the past year, with a quarter gambling, according to a poll of 550 people in February by Vp commu-nications Inc. and pollster peter D. Hart. Eighty-two percent of Ameri-cans polled view casino gaming as acceptable and 60 percent said the casino industry is very or somewhat important to the travel and tourism industry.

Multi-billion-dollar industryIn the United States, 483 com-

mercial casinos operated in 22 states in 2010 and generated $34.6 billion in gross revenues, according to the American Gaming Association.

Two hundred forty tribes were running 460 gaming operations in 30 states as of July, according to the national Indian Gaming com-mission. In 2009, gaming operations by 237 Indian tribes in 28 states generated $26.2 billion in gross revenues from gaming and $3.2 billion in gross revenues from re-lated hospitality and entertainment services, according to the national Indian Gaming Association.

In canada, there were 70 casi-nos, 28 racinos and two Ludoplex facilities as of September 2010, according to the Alberta Gaming Research Institute. Total revenues from all government-controlled gambling, including casinos and lotteries and minus prizes and win-nings, were $13.7 million in 2008, according to Statistics canada’s most recent fi gures available.
