Poor Eye Sight and Visual Impairment

Themajority of people with blurryvision have this easily resolvedwith the prescribing of appropriateglasses, or sometimes with thehelp of medicines or surgery.Optometrist Mohammed Bhojaniexplains more about those peoplewhomay have low vision...

There are individuals that mayhave reduced vision on one orboth eyes that cannot be improvedwith normal glasses and this iscommonly described as havinglow vision.

Statistics show there are over 6000people in Leicestershire alonethat have been registered as sightimpaired or partially sighted; butit is estimated that there may beover 3000 more that currently havelow vision to the extent that theystruggle to do everyday tasks suchas getting about, cooking, crossingroads safely and reading.

These people may benefit fromsupport and advice, including thesupply of special equipment &training to manage their dailytasks better, thereby reducing thefeeling of distress, isolation andfrustration.

The degree of this visual problemvaries between individuals anddepends on their own particulareye condition. There is now ahuge range of low vision aidsavailable, from simple handmagnifiers through to telescopesand the latest electronic devices.

To Autumn... Season of Mists and - er, hmm!

It’s a pretty safe bet that when John Keats wrotehis ode “To Autumn” in September 1819 they’d hada far, far better summer than the one just gone.My outdoor tomatoes have failed miserably thisyear andmy tallest sunflower was a good footshorter than the ones I’ve grown in previoussummers. Keats asks, rhetorically, “Where are thesongs of Spring?” and somight we!

When Soar Valley Life first bounced upon your doormat sevenmonths ago, back on that April “morning unaware... while thechaffinch sang on orchard bough...” (Robert Browning) theoutlook promised a fair and fine summer. But it seems now tohave leap-frogged straight through to mid-Autumn, with onlythe odd sunny day as a token memory.

But, inclement summers aside, your Soar Valley Life grows inleaps and bounds. We’re now up to 40 pages and will grow to44 next month; our website is now ‘live’ with our advertisers ina business directory. Go towww.soarvalleylife.co.uk and have alook for yourself where you will find links to their own websitesif they have one. Until the end of the year this service will beentirely free of charge for current advertisers.

We also now have a thriving Facebook page which grows bythe week. Here we keep our ‘friends’ up to date on a daily basiswith what’s happening in our neck of the valley, both businessand community wise - anything we’re told about that’s worthyof passing on will be on our page. If you are a member ofFacebook please ’like’ us at Soar Valley Life.

During the next few weeks we’ll be adding more to the website- our walking features and new community pages, togetherwith our new cycling articles carefully researched first hand byour own home grown feature writer Si Clyst. This is in directresponse to the surge of interest that seems to have occurredas a result of Team UK’s success at the Tour de France and theOlympics, especially Sir Bradley Sideburns and Lady Victoria! We’ll be focussing to increase promotion in these areas overthe next months, with advertisers who specialise in outdoorpursuits and merchandise. You never know, you might even seeone of us on a bike on a fine day sometime soon.

New this month too is our first restaurant advertiser, andwe hope we can attract more places to eat andmeet as weapproach the festive season, so that we can promote the richvariety of tastes we have here on our doorstep.

We love the feedback we get from readers and advertisers asit seems that we are really appreciated, and, as someone oncesaid, an ounce of praise is worth a pound of pay.

Finally Mr Keats would seem to besomething of a soothsayer; his lastline reads ‘and gathering swallowstwitter in the skies...’We’ll be on Twitter next month too!

Let it be, for tenants and landlords alike, there will be an answer...

Mother & Son, Rekha andMitul Gadhia, are the owner managers of the newCharnwood franchise of nationwideletting specialists, Martin & Co.

“Our family has a small portfolio of property which welet out to tenants and over the years we have come toappreciate what good service from an agency reallymeans; or more importantly what it’s like to suffer frombad service,” says Rekha. “When we were looking for anew agent we came across Martin & Co, but they didn’thave an office covering our area, so we thought we’d startone; after all, we should know by now what landlords andtenants need.”

Rekha has worked in retail financial services for morethan thirty years and sees this change of direction as anexciting challenge. “I’ll be managing the day to dayrunning of the business: dealing with landlords andtenants, finding the right people for the right property andthen sorting all the administration stuff out - something Ihave been doing for other companies for three decades.”

Mitul, who continues his own career as a senior branchmanager in retail finance, will focus on more strategicmatters with the new franchise, making sure all contractsand legal matters are up to scratch.

“We know from our own first hand experience howimportant it is to match the right tenant with the rightproperty, if you get that bit wrong no one wins. Martin& Co are the UK’s number 1 letting agents, and only dealwith rented property. There are many estate agents whowill handle rented property but most only dabble in it.It really is a specialised business and it’s much better tofocus on one aspect or the other. Our biggest advantage isthe national matching service we offer through the Martin& Co website - www.martinco.com - at any one timethere are 900 properties in the Charnwood area needingtenants and yet there are many more tenants that arelooking for a property to rent - it’s ironic isn’t it? Manyprospective tenants move in from another part of thecountry, especially with Loughborough being a universitytown, so having the resource of a sophisticated websitematching service is a big bonus. We will be concentratingon a special student homes service, which will focus onthe special needs of this particular market place.

We offer the very best and most flexible packages for allparties; from a tenant find only service, right up to a fullymanaged service offering complete peace of mind for thelandlord. We also offer landlords a free rent guarantee

insurance together with a deposit guarantee for thetenants. One of the biggest advantages both tenants andowners get by dealing with Martin & Co is the speed atwhich we can complete the process, and yes we do putour money on the line - as we say in our advert - we let itfast or we let it free!”

The area covered by Martin & Co, Mountsorrel covers allthe postcodes in LE11 and LE12 - that’s more than 52,000properties of which more than 4,000 make up the privaterental market place. According to figures published inthe latest Charnwood housing needs survey, more than athird of private tenants move on each year; this indicatesthere is a clear need for specialists like Martin & Co toprovide a very efficient managed service to make surethat a property spends the least amount of time standingempty.

So, be you a tenant or a landlord and you want words ofwisdom, call the experts...

A Ride into Leicester

Over recent years I have noticed, fromthe comfort of mymotor car, that theCounty Council has been spendinga lot of money on blue signposts forcyclists, though I’d not thought muchmore about it...

That was until Sir Bradley Wiggins and his sideboards, along with a few folk down at the Velodrome, inspiredthe nation with heroic deeds receiving shiny goldnecklaces for their efforts. I was then taken with thenotion that I could do that and set off to the shed todig out my bicycle - which I had bought a few yearsago, thinking it was a good idea.

A week later, after fettling tyre pressures and a practiceride round the block, I was ready. But I needed aplan, which came in the form of a Saturday morningeye appointment in Leicester. Now, I am not keen ondriving into Leicester at the best of times and withpetrol getting close to the same price per gallon asbeer, I decided to let loose the cycling beast on anunsuspecting city. But a small sensible part of mybrain said, “What about the hills? Especially the one atBirstall- that looks like it could hurt.”

And this is where those blue signposts come in. One atthe end of Platts Lane in Cossington proclaims Systonto be quite close, so off I set on what was a pleasantSaturday to head for town...

The road from Sileby to Cossington is flat and takes buta few minutes. I pass by the Royal Oak - its green doorfirmly shut - and turn right, down Platts Lane past theRugby field and reach the end near the nursery. It isnow that I can see where the Council have spent moreof our money as there is a width restriction barrierin place. This seems particularly unfair on very widepeople but my bike and I squeeze through and we arenow pedalling down the path by the lakes. The sunis shining, birds are singing and Wanlip doesn’t smelltoo bad. There’s only the sound of my tyres and theoccasional crack of a snail’s shell or the squish of a slugto be heard.

Moments later I’m at the canal where I turn left; herethe path is unmade but there is evidence of moreCouncil good works as they are grading it and seem tobe making a proper path. Also the good thing aboutcanals is you don’t tend to find them on a slope, so thegoing is easy all the way to the Hope and Anchor. Andhaving negotiated several more of the width barriers Ican now get through without stopping the bike.Next I am entering Watermead Park which until nowis a place I’ve never really looked into; I know of it buthave never been and it is a mini revelation! Lakes withsailors floating around, even a pack of Newfoundlanddogs being trained to rescue drowning people. Allthe way along there are signposts telling me places Ican go to; Thurmaston to the left, Leicester straighton, etc. Continuing past various public artworks, suchas “Shadows of their Former Selves” and somethingresembling the hull of an old boat, I leave the park atBirstall and pass through another barrier down by thecanal. The White Horse is very close indeed should Idecide I need fluid replacement therapy, but I don’tand press on over the bridge towards the “Mammoth”.

I am not entirely sure of it’srelevance but people seem

to be enjoying it.

Passing under a largeroad I recognise it asthe flyover at the endof Birstall and feel quite

smug as this is so easy.In no time at all I am into

the back streets of Leicester, crossing Loughborough Road up

towards the Talbot pub and Belgrave Hall museum.

No time to stop though as I have an appointment, so Ifollow the cycle route by the side of the canal past theback end of Abbey Pumping Station and the inflatableSpace Centre and on towards Abbey Park. One roadto cross and I am passing Cardinal Wolsey standingin a flower bed on my way through the park to endup on St Margaret’s Way still on the cycle path. Fromhere the centre of town is only a couple of minutesand I have achieved my goal. I’ve saved petrol, avoidedrenting a car park and rekindled the joy of cycling from

my youth. Only now it’s an awful lot safer as I’ve hadso little interaction with traffic it is silly. All I have to donow is hang around outside the optician’s and try tostop sweating. (I didn’t consider this before I set off buthe was nice about it.)

The return ride home was equally pleasant andaccording to my phone I’d travelled 18.9 miles at anaverage speed of 11.3 mph and burnt 767kCal (don’task me) of energy. The whole trip took one hour andforty minutes. I don’t think ‘Sir Brad’ will be quaking inhis cycling shoes any time soon.

Top Tips Around the Home & GardenBy Dave Walters of Charnwood Maintenance Services

Autumn is an ideal time to spruce up your home. With kids going back to school and starting anew year, look at autumn as a fresh start for yourhouse, too.

OUTDOORS1. Wash your windows inside and especially outside. Thesummer can be just as harsh on windows as winter. Don’t waituntil spring to give your whole house a brighter outlook.2. Before you store your patio furniture and children’s outdoortoys, wash them off and cover them in plastic or old sheets.3. Check the caulk, seals and weather stripping around allwindows and doors and repair as needed. Wipe down windowwells and ledges. Hose and wipe down exterior doors.4. Drain and store garden hoses. If you have an in-groundsprinkler system, have it professionally blown out andwinterised.5. Check gutters and downspouts and clear out debris.6. Clean out your garage and hose out summer dirt and grime.7. Trim trees away from the house. Have dead trees andbranches removed by professional tree trimmers.8. Check walls and fences for signs of wear and repair anyloose panels or holes. Wobbly paving stones can also besecured, but choose a dry spell to do any cementing.9. After the recent winds and rains check for loose slates etc.on your roof.

INDOORS1. Have your fireplace and chimney inspected, cleaned andmade ready for winter use.2. Autumn is a good time to replace batteries in your smokealarms, carbon monoxide detectors and other home safetydevices.3. Get your beds ready for a cosy winter. Autumn is alsoa good time to do twice-annual mattress turns. Flip yourmattress this autumn and next spring and turn it end-to-end.4. Schedule a professional carpet cleaning or rent a carpetcleaner and do it yourself.5. Clean out your kitchen cupboards and pantry, payingparticular attention to baking supplies, pans and equipmentthat you’ll need for Christmas baking.6. Pull your refrigerator, clothes washer and dryer out from thewall and clean behind them - and retrieve any long lost socks!Brush dust off refrigerator coils and use a narrow vacuum hoseattachment to clean inside the lint catcher of your dryer.7. Install or replace weather stripping on all doors andwindows. Check for cracks around pipes and electrical outletsentering or exiting the walls.8. Have your heating system checked by a licensed heating/air- conditioning professional. Most manufacturersrecommend at least annual inspections.

With obesity now affecting 1 in 4 women and 1 in5 men, the results of a study by the National HeartForum show that 75% of adults will be obese by2020.

Although Government initiativeshave helped raise awareness ofthe problems associated with ourgrowing waistlines and sedentarylifestyles, levels of obesity amongstboth children and adults havecontinued to rise.

In direct contrast, Debbie Ford,LighterLife Weight-ManagementCounsellor for Loughborough, hashelped local residents shed thepounds; the lady pictured here lost an incredible 4 stonesin 4 months!

Debbie says, “One of the reasons people chooseLighterLife is the speed at which they are able to loseweight. Many clients join LighterLife having tried otherweight-loss programmes; they’ve been frustrated at the

slow rate of weight loss, lost motivation and have justgiven up. With LighterLife however, they get fast, simple, safe and sustainable weight-loss and most people seeresults from week one.”

Through the use of nutritionally balanced soups, shakes, meals and bars, clients are able to lose weight quickly andsafely - and maintain that weightloss. Weekly, single-sex groupmeetings are the other key featureof LighterLife. These are designedto help clients explore the reasonswhy they put on weight – becausethere’s usually a bit more to it thansimply ‘eating too much’.

Understanding why they overeatmeans they’re less likely to returnto the old habits that led to weightgain in the past, so they can livelighter in the future.

Sileby Day Nursery is doing its very bestto hold on to that glowing summerfeeling by getting the pre-school childrento paint their own versions of the wellknown andmuch loved ‘Sunflowers’ byVincent Van Gogh...

Nursery Manager Tracey Brown explained theimportance of ‘art’ for young children, ‘It is aco-operative learning experience that we takevery seriously here in the nursery. It providespleasure, challenge and a sense of mastery. We arelooking to expand our artistic resources over thecoming months and already have a music teacherwho comes in and takes group singing classes, which the children love and respond to verypositively.’

The nursery boasts a mural painted by pupilsfrom Rawlins Community College that thechildren helped to plan and design based on afantasia theme which they all discussed together.

‘Art activities also help children’s social andemotional development,’ said Tracey, ‘Childrenlearn about themselves and others through artactivities. It really helps them build self-esteem.It’s an opportunity for children to make a personalstatement about their uniqueness through artwhilst allowing them to express happiness, joy, andpride.’

The children were introduced to Van Gogh’spaintings by looking at them and talking about howthey made them feel. They then used him as theirinspiration to release their own creativity. Theystarted by painting their own portraits, usingmirrors and descriptive language before turningtheir skills to painting sunflowers. They used theirhands to paint and create the effect. As you canimagine they had a lot of fun!

The outcome was exquisite and the paintings willhopefully be displayed amongst the community todistract everyone who sees them from these coolerAutumnal days!

There’s a certificate dated 21st September 1926hanging on the office wall of Tony Scottorn, Chairman ofCharnwood Car Company of Loughborough, which says:

MrH.M. Scottorn is recognised as a Bona Fide&HonourableAgent pledged to conduct business upon lineswhichwill ensure the

Sanctity of his Contracts and that hewill always give:

A SQUAREDEAL&GOODSERVICE

The penalty for any breach would be a fine of £250, morethan £5,000 in today’s money!

This was Tony’s Dad who started his garage business in 1922 at SixHills opposite the Durham Ox Hotel on the A46. The garage is stillthere although now under a different owner - the one that sellsMurco fuel. We can assume that Mr H. M. Scottorn offered manysquare deals in the ensuing years as evidenced by the framed1934 calendar also on Tony’s wall; the business had expandedby then and he also had a tyre company on Nottingham RoadLoughborough.

When Tony’s father sold the garage business he bought a farmnearby where Tony was brought up and where he began hisworking life. But the lure of the motor car was too much and in thesixties Tony went to work for Arthur Prince in Loughborough, first asa salesman then as Sales Manager, before starting his own businessmore than 30 years ago.

In 1988 The Charnwood Car Company became the region’s mainCitroen Dealer.

Definitely worth the paper it’s written on!On 30th August 1993 Tony, alongwith Roger Cramp and DudMoseley, drove a Citroen ZXTurbo for 1,416 miles aroundMillbrook motor test circuitunder the scrutiny of R.A.C.observers. Driving in one anda half hour shifts they broke19 records for the class, 12 ofwhich still stand today.

Their average speed, as verified by another certificate on Tony’soffice wall, was 117.97 miles per hour! That Citroen ZX Turbo stillcommands pride of place today at the entrance to Tony’s premiseson Duke Street, Loughborough.

I asked Tony what he considered to be his greatest achievementand he showed me a letter he’d recently received from the GoodGarage Scheme.

“After all these years it is this that I am most proud of...”

The letter, addressed to Melanie Davie, Tony’s daughter and MD ofthe company, congratulated Charnwood Car Company upon beingvoted one of the top five garages nationwide.

Will he put that in a frame to mount on his wall?

“You bet!”

The personal nature of any matrimonial orrelationship breakdown sometimesmakes it difficultto ask for help or advice. Quite often you rely onhearsay; at one time or another youmay have spokento a friend or family member about certain issues. Some of the following statements will no doubt befamiliar to you but what youmay be surprised toknow is that they are all either partly or completelyuntrue!

* Divorce is automatic after you have been separated for2 years

* You can have a “quickie” divorce* Irretrievable breakdown of relationship is the only

grounds for divorce* Once you are divorced your surname reverts to your

maiden name automatically* Step-parents cannot have parental responsibility in

respect of their step children* It is up to the Courts to decide on how much child

maintenance should be paid* If you don’t pay child maintenance you have no right to

see your child* You and your partner have lived together for six months

or more and are therefore classed as a ‘common law’husband or wife

* When I divorced my husband/wife walked away witheverything and I got nothing

There are of course laws in place to govern how thesethings should be dealt with. However, no two cases are thesame; each is judged on an individual basis and thereforewhat happened to your friend or relative may not be thecase for you.

Relationship breakdowns are always difficult for the peopleinvolved, but even more so if they do not have the full factsabout any rights they may, or may not, have. It is thereforeimportant that proper legal advice is sought to obtaincorrect guidance and information.Moss Solicitors Family Department offers a free 30minute consultation to give you the benefit of havingearly professional guidance. This will enable you to makeimportant decisions which can impact upon you and yourfamily.

People with diabetes can develop serious problems withtheir feet which may affect how easily they can walk andcan even lead to amputation.

Foot problems can affect anyone who has diabetes, whether theyare being treated with insulin, tablets, non-insulin injections or dietand physical activity only. People with diabetes are more likely to beadmitted to hospital with a foot ulcer than with any other complicationof diabetes.Diabetes reduces blood flow to certain areas of the body, especiallylimbs and particularly the feet, which makes it harder for your body toheal injuries. Diabetes nerve damage may cause you to no longer feelpain in your feet and therefore you may not realise you have a woundor injury that needs treatment. Many of these serious problems can be prevented by taking good careof your feet and your health:• Manage your diabetes, including keeping your blood pressure, bloodsugar (glucose) and cholesterol at levels your health care providerrecommends.• Don’t smoke; smoking reduces blood flow to the feet.• Make healthy food choices.• Stay at a healthy weight.• Be physically active every day.• Take your medicines even when you feel good.• Have regular comprehensive checks with your foot care provider.• Check your feet for sores and other injuries every day.• Wear shoes that fit right and don’t rub, pinch or cause blisters.• Never walk barefoot or whilst wearing just socks.

Do not try to deal with corns, calluses, verrucae or other footproblems by yourself. They should be treated by a foot care provider. Inparticular, do not use chemicals or acid plasters to remove corns, etc.

Nowadays it’s hard to imagine living withoutelectricity and the convenience and comfortit provides. All day and every day our lives aregoverned by its power; delivered by overheadpylon wires from the national grid to sub stationsand then on through underground armouredcables to the fuse boxes in our houses.

Steve Fowler, founder of Fowler Electricaland Alarms Limited, corrects me hereand informs me that they are now calledconsumer units.

“If your home is more than twenty yearsold and you’ve never had a re- wire youprobably don’t have one of these. Mostlikely you’ll have one of the old fuse boxeswith individual plug-in fuses and adifferent rated fuse wire in each one.”

I tell him I can remember the days ofstumbling about in the dark to find atorch, fumbling around to locatethe fuse wire and then standingprecariously on a wobbly chair tryingto guess which fuse had gone. And how it’s so much easier nowif there’s an overload - all you have to do to restore power is toflick a switch back on.

“Much safer,” agrees Steve, “yet many homeowners put offhaving a re-wire because of the perceived upheaval and mess. However, they don’t need to worry any more, we can be in andout in a week. We always re-plaster and use a professionalcleaning contractor to ensure the property is left pristine. Wealso offer safe and secure storage for household items if thehomeowner chooses to have the work done whilst they’re away- at no extra charge. A complete re-wire costs from £2,000 andis fully warranted and certified against defect by NAPIT , theNational Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers.”

I asked Steve about the meaning of PAT testing and heexplained, “It’s a requirement that all businesses which employfive or more people, or are open to the public, have everyportable appliance tested once per year. This ensures thatitems are safe for use and protects the owner from any legalconsequences which could stem from faulty equipment causinginjury. Non-compliance with PAT standards can lead to severe

punishments for corporations and landlords, ranging from finesto imprisonment.”

Fowler Electrical can tackle any size of job - from the biggest, like the wiring circuits they installed in the new multi-millionpound NHS Treatment Centre at Nottingham’s QMC hospital, down to the smallest and are pleased to help with somethingas simple as just a single new TV socket for which they chargeonly fifty pounds. Call Steve Fowler on 01509 816 465 or emailhim at [email protected] and be sure you’re safe andsecure!

More than a make-over...

Look out of the main gates of St Mary’s Churchin Sileby and you’re looking east along KingStreet, down towards theMidlandmain linerailway bridge. I’ve searched without success foran old picture of the building that has survivedthrough generations of change, whenmost of itsneighbours have become car parks, new-buildhouses, flats or empty land.

Never the prettiest of pubs and certainly not the mostloved in its latter days, the Railway Hotel (that was) is inthe process of a very professional refurbishment, andalready has its first high class retail business occupant.Eden Skincare and Beauty Salon, re-located fromWoodhouse Eaves, opened its doors to customers oldand new onMonday, 30th July.

Holly Smart, Eden’sproprietor explained,“As soon as SimonRichardson showedme the plans hehad for the place Ijust knew that’swhere I wanted

Eden to be. The old placewas on the first floor andhad become quite tiredlooking during the 8 yearssince I took it over; itdesperately needed are-furb’. We had a blankcanvas to work with here.So we asked for two fulltreatment rooms, showers, toilets and a spaciousreception area, all self contained. We now have a uniqueteam of therapists and can offer all the skincare andbeauty treatments you could ever need under one roof- from Gelish manicures (20% off with our reader offer -see page 29) Collagentreatments (Botox) bynurses, Decleor facials, along with electrolysis, waxing, eyelash extensionsand Fake Bake spray tanning.Oh yes, and don’t forget ourMAC trained make-up artistfor your full MAC make-over.”

So, now, you really do getmore than just a make-over down at the Old RailwayHotel in Sileby!

Room with a view.Amile or so down theMelton Road out of Burtonon theWolds lies Horse Leys Farm. Some yearsago the front of the farmwas developed intoa restaurant. This has now become one of thepremier Indian restaurants in our area.

Mary and I enjoyed an excellent meal there last bank HolidayMonday. The Indian Cottage first opened its doors on the 22ndJune this year following extensive refurbishment after thebuilding had stood empty for a time.

We were shown to our seat by the window which lookedout over the open fields towards Wymeswold. Once seated,Sumon, our waiter, asked if we’d like a drink as he gave us the

menus; I had a coldbeer and Mary chosea glass of Pinot Grigiot.Although it was earlyin the evening, therewere already threeother parties dining. In many independentrestaurants thesedays there’s not a lotof room, but here, probably because it’s

out of town, there’sample space for ahundred or more.

An Indian meal cannever begin withoutPoppidoms (or are theyPapadoms, pappidumsor peppidams?) andchutney. We had threechutneys, Mango, onion and a lime pickleto die for, if you likeyour limes really hotthat is! Mary loved theMango and I loved the lime. For our main course Mary had aLamb Korma and Pilau Rice. She said that it was the best she’dever had; the lamb was perfectly braised and the sauce hadjust the right blend of sweet coconut with subtle spices. MyChicken Tikka Biriani was excellent, much better because thechicken had been cooked first before being added to the otheringredients . We had a Plain Naan and Vegetable Pakhura toaccompany our meal. Mr Choudhury, Indian Cottage’s headchef should get a Michelin star for his Naans. Perfected overthe forty years of experience he brings to our table, I guess.Excellent service too, efficient, attentive, but not fussy orpatronising and extremely good value - we had a completerestaurant experience including drinks and complimentaryBaileys for a few pence over thirty pounds. Would werecommend it? Well, we are going again for our weddinganniversary next Monday...

THE WORLD OF SOCIAL NETWORKING!

I am sure we have all heard the words Facebook and Twitter, but here are some interesting details.

When the World WideWeb became popular in the mid-1990s, it allowed people and businesses to share informationin ways that was never possible before. While users could create home pages and post their own content onto theWeb, these individual sites lacked a sense of community.

In the early 2000’s, the Web became much more personal, as social networking websites were introduced and thenthe hype began…

Founded in 2004 by 21 year old Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s mission was to make the world more open andconnected. People use Facebook to stay linked with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world and toshare and express what matters to them and of course we are all just a little bit curious and love to see what everyoneis doing!

From people and now to business, all the big brands and companies have Facebook pages including Coca Cola, iTunes,Converse and now Soar Valley Life . Whether you are a small independent business or a huge corporation it is thefastest way to pass information around and also to build your customer base.

Whether you’re 13 or 93 social networking is a huge sensation with access via laptop, mobile or ipad.

Facebook Facts

There were 955 million active users on Facebook at the end of June 2012. 300 million photos are uploaded to the site each day. Facebook went public in May 2012 and is valued at $104 billion. Facebook is free to join but for how long…

Twitter is an on-line social networking site and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and readmessages of up to 140 characters. More people ‘tweet’ from their mobile devices than a regular PC or laptop.

There are currently 500 million users on Twitter. Women account for more than 53% of Twitter users. Everyday Twitter gets more than 300,000 new users.

Whether you like, share, follow or trend, Twitter and Facebook have taken the world by storm.
