Ball Wall Project - Day 2
After five gloomy, wet days, we have been promised love-ly weather for the weekend so what better reason is there to head to Sun Corner on Monday to cheer on our kart in
the Soapbox Derby and have a go on our ice cream competition stall? Don’t forget that tickets are much
cheaper if purchased in advance. As well as the many items reported on in our newsletter, we were also visited yesterday by three members of the Governing Body who were undertaking the first of their
two monitoring visits this term; looking at inclusion, French, British Values and the curriculum as a whole.
They found their day both enjoyable and informative. We are grateful to them for giving up their time to join us.
Soapbox Derby - Monday 7th May 2018 Don’t forget to come along to the Soapbox Derby on
Monday 7th May for a fabulous day of fun! It’s not too late to buy your tickets online and save
yourself some money as well as enter the Buttsbury Draw to win yourself some bubbly and also £100 for the school!

Hopefully we’ll see you there!
Ball Wall Project - Day 2 Following the postponement of Day 2 and Day 3 of our Ball
Wall project last term due to heavy snow and rain (yes, in March) I am pleased to confirm that, subject to the weather being on our side for a change, Day 2 of the project will be taking place on Friday 11th May for Year 3, Year 6 and 4H. Children need to bring the oldest clothes they possess and some old shoes too (if possible) as the paint seemed to go everywhere on Day 1. An old hat might also be useful as
well as a carrier bag to bring the clothes home in!
Year 5 Assembly Parents and grandparents of children in Year 5 are warmly
invited to join us for the Year 5 assembly on Thursday 10th May at 9.30am. Please note that, in order to avoid
disturbances and distractions, if at all possible, we ask that you arrange childcare for your other children and don’t
bring them along. Thank you.
Assembly Theme - Courage During our Monday morning assembly, we explored this
week’s theme by finding out more about the Paralympics and discussing how much courage each of the athletes showed. Then we went on to find out about the charity Wheelpower which provides opportunities for disabled children and adults to take part in sport. Finally, I told the children about Dick and Rick Hoyt (Team Hoyt) who showed exceptional courage in the face of adversity. I’d recommend everyone googles them to find out more as
they are an inspiration to us all.
The Ark Day Centre - Billericay At the recent Pupil Voice meeting, it was agreed that each
school in Billericay would undertake some community work, with the elderly. As we already have a link with The Ark Day Centre in South Green, it seemed to make sense
for us to develop this further. So, on Monday 30th April, 7 members of our School Council (Rotakids) visited The Ark,
during the afternoon, along with some members of staff. The children each baked some cakes to take along with
them to share with the elderly people at The Ark. They also spent some time playing basketball with the people and also
chatting to them and helping with their collage. It was a very successful visit and we are looking forward to
developing this further with future visits.

Forest Schools On Thursday, a group of Year 3 and 4 pupils had a fantastic first session of Forest School. They had immense fun play-
ing games, den building, making tree spirit faces, scavenger hunting, drinking hot chocolate and eating biscuits! It’s not a surprise to note that they are looking forward to their second
adventure next week!
Chinese Lessons Once again we have been fortuitous and been
able to offer some Chinese lessons across the school via our partnership work with The Anglo-
European School. Miss Huo visited us for the first time after Easter and will be joining us every
Friday afternoon for the remainder of the academic year, meaning that every class will
have the opportunity to have a taste of Chinese
language and culture. Relishing the opportunity to develop their
knowledge of different cultures and languages, Year 5 were the first to enjoy their Chinese
lessons with Miss Huo. The sessions were very interactive and gave the children the opportunity
to practise Chinese greetings and to learn to count to 10. To help with the - very tricky - pronunciation, Miss Huo used hand signals,
which really engaged the children and was great fun. As a final challenge, the children wrote the
Chinese numbers by using a system of strokes; the results were very impressive!
Valuables - Watches, Earrings, Fit Bits We strongly advise that valuable items, such as watches,
earrings and Fit Bits, which all need to be removed for PE (in line with Essex County Council Health and Safety regulations) are left at home on PE days. Thank you.
Bag 2 School Thank you very much for
supporting the Bag 2 School event. We had an impressive pile of bags at the front of
the school on Tuesday morning so hopefully, when it is weighed, it will convert to an equally splendid amount of
money! Thank you to our Friends’ Association for
organising the event.

Year 5 Visit to the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens Although a gloomy start to the week, Year 5 were not perturbed and
ventured into school early to go to the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens. This term they are learning about the Ancient
Maya and they went to visit the rainforest hot house to experience the environment similar to where the Maya lived. They also learnt about the cocoa plant and its importance to the Mayan people. They used its beans to trade with as they were considered to be very precious. Obviously whilst learning about the cocoa plant the children had to taste various chocolates to see the difference in sweetness. The Ancient Maya would have a chocolate chilli drink
rather than actual chocolate and it was quite bitter. The children had mixed feelings about the chilli chocolate they tried! Everyone had an excellent time and enjoyed filming sketches and documentaries
about Mayan life amongst the lush vegetation of the rainforest. Thank you to all the adults that helped make the day so successful.

Anyone for Tennis? Wimbledon might be several weeks away, but Buttsbury got a head start on Wednesday, when a team from Years 3 & 4 and
two teams from Years 5 & 6 competed in the William de Ferrers School Sport Partnership Finals at Billericay Tennis Club.
Despite the typical Wimbledon weather, rain did not stop play, as Buttsbury served and volleyed their way through each match.
Two girls and two boys from each team were seeded and played in either the Cup or the Plate competitions. The Buttsbury
children were outstanding in each category, particularly as it rained throughout, only stopping when the day’s tennis finished!
Year 3/4 Cup – First place through to the County final. Year 3/4 Plate – Second place
Year 5/6 Cup – Finished 4th overall Year 5/6 plate - Finished 3rd overall
A special note goes to the following children who won every match they played!
Harriet Rowe-Goodey (4P) Fatima Ahmed (4P) Alfie Riches (6U)
Each and every one of the children were a credit to Buttsbury and not only showcased their tennis talents, but also their sports-
manship throughout both competitions. Well done to all the players and a big thank you to all the adults who transported and
supported both teams and to Ms Marshall who spent the whole day out in the rain, coaching and encouraging the teams.
