So you want to make a terrarium? HERE`S HOW! 

 MATERIALS TO BUILD A TERRARIUM 

● glass globe to house the terrarium ­ this can be purchased new or a repurposed glass jar or bowls ● activated charcoal for keeping fresh ● well draining potting soil ● small gravel for drainage ● crystals, shells, small figures or stones (wash everything first) ● small plants well suited terrarium life, mosses ● succulent, if you like, although, it's not recommended to mix succulents and plants due to different watering  ● spray bottle or mister 

 CONTAINERS ­Glass containers encompassing complete miniature environments ­Containers: Fish tanks and bowls, wine bottles, glass bowls, vases, dome, mini­greenhouse ­bottles and jars are possible but harder to access interior ­clean well and check for cracks ­must be clear glass for best results ­Separator: mesh, old nylons, nylon netting  CHOOSING PLANTS ­Where will it be kept? Sun? Temperature of place? 

­Succulents need sandy soil ­Search for plants needs online ­Mosses and ground covers work great around a tall central plant ­centerpiece plant (tall or big) ­groundcover and small plants on sides ­plants in one environment must have similiar heat, light and soil needs  10 TERRARIUM PLANTS ­Ferns (spider, rabbit foot, button, maidenhair, ­Baby`s tears ­Variegata ­mini ivy ­Moss ­Golden clubmoss ­African violet ­Creeping clubmoss ­Aquamarine ­begonias  OTHER TYPES OF TERRARIUM THEMES ­cacti/succulents ­carnivorous plants  CREATION 

1. Wash bowl well 2. Add drainage >gravel and then charcoal ­ ¼ charcoal and ¾ gravel 3. Add separator material (optional ­ fine mesh 4. Add soil ­ Dampen soil before adding ● The soil mixture should be 2/3 of the soil structure and the entire structure should be ¼ the depth of the 

terrarium ● Wipe smudges off glass as you go 

5. Plan design before placing plants and objects 6. Make depressions where plants will go, remove plant from container and remove extra soil 7. Place and tamp down soil around root balls 8. Cover bare areas with objects or moss 9. Evenly water (observe soil turning dark, no puddles!) 10. Mist the foliage and place in the light

● Cover with magazine 2/3rd when away for a few days ● Do not allow to dry out ● Let water stand overnight in pitcher to evaporate chlorine from water 

● Water as necessary to keep soil moist (drier for succulents) ● Water slowly all over surface, not just one spot ● If overwatered, soak up water from surface, do not tip to drain! ● If water runs to bottom, tilt gently to allow soil to absorb ● Spray with mister as well as watering ● Clean glass once monthly. Water will leave mineral deposit line which must be wiped with vinegar­water 

mix and cloth gently ● Remove rocks and objects to wash ● Use moistened cloth/paper towel on stick to wash hard to reach spots ● Remove dying vegetarion immediately ● Cut or tuck back plants coming out of the terrarium
