It isnoteworthytomentiontheepidemicof childhoodobesity in theCityofRochesteraccording to theChildrensAgenda,39%ofyouthundertheageof18areoverweightorobese.Sixtyminutesofskateboardingorbmxridingburnmore calories than running at 12minute pace, playing basketball, lacrosse, tennis, swimming orbaseball.PotentialEconomicImpactWhileconductingresearchforthisdocument,Iwasunabletofindanystudiesthatquantifiedempiricaldataontheeconomicimpactofskateparks.Therefore,theonlywaytoformulateanyconclusionsaboutpotentialeconomicimpactsofaskateparkinRochesteristotriangulatethesedatausingreasonableandvalidcomparisons.For thepurposesof thisdocument,economic impactsareoperationallydefinedandwillbediscussedutilizingthefollowingframework.

TheproposedRocCitySkateparkwillbeadestinationexperiencethatisnotvisitedorusedinamotorvehicle.PeoplewhocometousetheskateparkwillbepedestriansindowntownRochester.ValueAddedPublic sectorparksand recreation facilitiesareanengineofeconomicdevelopment,and the largestskateparkinNorthAmericawilllendtourismbenefittotheCityofRochesterduetothenoveltyoftheparkwithinaculturethatiswillingtotraveltothenewestandmostnoveldestinationexperience.Estimates by the National Recreation and Park Association2 suggest that in one study the averageexpenditureamongnonlocalvisitorsperpersonperdayatfivedifferenttypesofrecreationfacilitieswas $62.58 per day per person. This study was dated 2010, so if this amount is incremented aconservative five percent the daily expenditure per person per day can be estimated at $65.71 perpersonperday atornear the recreation facility (downtownRochester). There areover 11,000,000skateboarders in theUnited States.According to a formulaprovided by the TonyHawk Foundation,roughly4.6percentofthepopulationisafrequentskateboarder(definedasskateboarding52daysormoreperyear).
